1. BILL SUMMARY

Legislation Title: RESOLUTION providing an honorary designation of South Jackson Street from 20th Avenue South to 23rd Avenue South as “Ernestine Anderson Way.”

Summary and background of the Legislation: Department of Transportation manufacture, install, and maintain honorary signs at the intersections of South Jackson Street and 20th Avenue South, South Jackson Street and 20th Place South, South Jackson Street and 22nd Avenue South, and South Jackson Street and 23rd Avenue South, which shall reflect the “Ernestine Anderson Way” honorary designation.

Ernestine Anderson was a legendary American and singer from Seattle’s Central Area and a graduate of Garfield High School. Ernestine Anderson Place was constructed in 2012 on South Jackson Street between 20th Ave South and 20th Place South to house and serve homeless and low-income seniors 55 and older in the Central Area neighborhood.

The cost to make the signs is $500 per sign. The signs are being paid for by the Office of Arts and Culture - Historic Central Area Arts and Cultural District. The total cost will be $2,000 for four signs. SDOT will invoice OAC for the cost.
