2011-12 Men’s Basketball Media Guide C.W.C.W. PPOSTOST PIONEERSPIONEERS 2011-12 Men’s Basketball CHRIS CASEY Head Coach • Second Season Western Connecticut ‘86 Chris Casey’s fi rst season at C.W. Post was a success- ful one as he led the Pioneers to an East Coast Confer- ence Championship and an appearance in the NCAA East Regional. Th e season was not without its challenges, as the Pioneers began the season with a 4-6 record, but rebounded to post a 17-4 slate the rest of the way, fi nish- ing 21-10 overall and 16-5 in the ECC. Four of Casey’s players were selected to All-ECC teams, and Stefan Bonneau earned ECC Player of the Year and NABC All- Region First Team, among several other honors. A former assistant men’s basketball coach at Divi- sion I St. John’s University, Casey was selected as C.W. Post’s head men’s basketball coach following a nationwide search in May 2010. Casey became the ninth head coach to take over the Pioneer program, which has qualifi ed for the NCAA Tournament three times in the last four years, including an appearance in the Elite Eight Tournament in 2009. Casey spent six years on the men’s basketball staff at St. John’s under former head coach Norm Roberts, serv- ing the fi rst two seasons as the Director of Operations before being promoted to Assistant Coach. During his tenure at St. John’s, Casey played a large role on Roberts’ staff as he was responsible for recruit- ing, opponent scouting, player development, on-court instruction and practice and game preparation. Casey’s fi rst season as an assistant coach proved to be one of signifi cance for the Red Storm. St. John’s made a return to the BIG EAST Championship Tournament for the fi rst time since 2003, posted its fi rst winning record (16-15) since that season, collected the most victories since its 21-13 campaign four years ago and compiled its best conference record (7-9) since 2003 as well. In 2008-09, Casey’s guidance helped the Red Storm equal that win total, propelling the squad to its fi rst BIG head coach chris casey EAST Tournament victory in six years and a postseason appearance in the CBI. Casey came to St. John’s from Central Connecticut State University, where he spent three seasons as the Blue Devils’ top assistant coach and recruiting coordinator. He was also responsible for game preparation, player devel- opment and on-the-fl oor coaching at CCSU. During his tenure with the Blue Devils, the team won the 2002 Northeast Conference championship and earned a berth in the 2002 NCAA Tournament. In 2003, Casey was named an AFLAC National Assistant Coach of the Year. In his three years with Central Connecticut State, the team averaged nearly 19 wins per year. For his eff orts, Casey was named the Year-by-Year Collegiate Head Coaching Record New Jersey Athletic Conference Coach of the Year. Prior to his time at Rutgers, Casey was an assistant basketball 1998-99 5-19 1999-2000 8-16 coach at St. Peter’s College for eight years. He served as 2000-01 14-11 Qualifi ed for ECAC tournament the team’s recruiting coordinator and helped land seven 2010-11 21-10 ECC Champions, NCAA Participant all-conference players and two players who were named Total 48-56 the conference’s Rookie of the Year. St. Peter’s qualifi ed for the Division I NCAA Tournament twice during his tenure, 1991 and again in 1995. Casey has also made coaching stops at his alma mater, Western Connecticut State, and St. Francis (N.Y.). In 1988-89, Western Connecticut fi nished the season 25-3 and made a trip to the Division III Elite Eight in the NCAA Tournament. Casey is a 1986 graduate of Western Connecticut State University with a B.S. in business administration. He earned his master’s in education administration from Central Connecticut State in 1993. He played basketball for four seasons at Western and was a two-time team captain. His team made an appear- ance in the ECAC Tournament in his senior season. Casey and his wife, Hope, have two daughters, Lau- ren (9) and Jordan (7).

PPOSTOST PIONEERSPIONEERS 2011-12 Men’s Basketball MARC RYBCZYK Assistant Coach • Second Season • Central Connecticut Marc Rybczyk returns for his second season as a Pioneer assistant, bringing over 12 years of collegiate coaching experience to the staff . Prior to C.W. Post, Rybczyk spent fi ve seasons at Southern Connecticut State University, four as the head coach of the Owls and one as an assistant. Before his tenure at Southern Connecticut, Rybczyk was the head coach at the State University of New York – Cobleskill, leading the team to a double fi gure win total in his lone season at Cobleskill. Before his tenure at SUNY Cobleskill, Rybczyk served as the lead assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at the University of New Haven from 2000-05. Rybczyk assisted the Chargers in their run to the 2004 NCAA Tournament, as well as their appearance in the 2003 regional semifi nal. Rybczyk began his coaching career as a volunteer assistant coach at Central Connecticut State University, where he also played as an undergraduate. Dur- ing Rybczyk’s time at CCSU, he helped guide the Blue Devils to a 2000 Northeast Conference Tournament championship and an appearance in the NCAA Tourna- ment. As a student-athlete, Rybczyk led the nation in three fi eld goals. He was a four-year starter and held the school’s three-point shooting record (single-season and career) for 12 years at CCSU. Rybcyzk’s 11 three-pointers in a game against Long Island University remain a Blue Devils’ single-game record, and he is cur- rently third on the all-time three-point fi eld goal list with 235 trifectas. Rybczyk then played professionally for the Adidas All-Star touring team from 1995-98 and the Converse All-Stars, both out of Syracuse, N.Y., as well as the Springfi eld Slamm of Springfi eld, Mass., from 1998-2000.

KAREEM BROWN Assistant Coach/Basketball Operations • Second Season • St. John’s ‘09

Kareem Brown enters his second season as a Pioneer assistant coach/basketball operations director, following a successful fi rst season where the Pioneers won the ECC Championship and advanced the NCAA tournament. In addition to his coaching duties, Brown’s responsibilities at C.W. Post in- clude recruiting, player development, game fi lm breakdown, academic progress of assistantcoaches student-athletes, and supervision of student managers. Brown came to C.W. Post after spending two years at St. John’s as a Graduate Assistant in the Athletic Department. His duties included creating handbooks for student-athletes, assisting the Athletic Director, and conducting excel spreadsheet for the NCAA Division I Soccer committee. While at St. John’s Brown also competed as a student athlete, but on the foot- ball fi eld in 2002 where he started as a freshman. Th e program was discontinued the following year. Brown earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from St. John Univer- sity. His Bachelor of Science came in Marketing from the school in January 2007, while the master’s degree was in Sport Management, received September 2009. Coaching experience includes a one year stint at Morris Catholic High School as the varsity assistant for boys basketball during the 2009-10 school year. Brown has also coached the Hoop Haven AAU program for the past year. He also has a number of camp and tournament experience including Five-Star Basketball, Hoop Group, Basketball City, Connecticut Basketball School, St. John’s University and Rumble In Th e Bronx.

PPOSTOST PIONEERSPIONEERS 2011-12 Men’s Basketball DAN MARK Assistant Coach • Second Season • Binghamton ‘06 Daniel Mark returns to the Pioneers for his second season on the staff . Mark came to the C.W. Post program with experience ranging in various areas in the game of basketball. Most recently he was the J.V. boy’s basketball coach at Lindenhurst High School, where he also served as an assistant on the varsity staff . Mark graduated from Binghamton University with a degree in Sociology in December of 2006. While at Binghamton, Mark served as a Teaching Assistant for the Basketball in Th eory and Practice class. He also earned his master’s degree at Dowling University in May of 2009, in Adolescence Education with a Middle Child- hood Extension. Other basketball experience for Mark includes serving as travel team head coach for the Plainview Police Athletic League from September 2005 to May 2008. He later became the director of the basketball clinic at the Plainview Athletic League. Other coaching duties included head coach of the AAU Program Long Island Lightning. Besides just coaching basketball, Mark has also spent time as a locker room attendant for the . He also was the head of basketball referees at the assistantcoaches Plainview PAL League R.J. RUTLEDGE Assistant Coach • First Season • Monmouth ‘11 R.J Rutledge joins the Pioneer men’s basketball coaching staff after spending the past four years as a member of the Monmouth Hawks basketball team. During his time as a Hawk, Rutledge averaged 18.6 minutes per game in 101 games played during his career, starting 41 of those games. He also averaged 5.9 points per game to go along with 108 three pointers made in his career. Prior to his career at Monmouth, Rutledge played three years of varsity of basketball at Lawerence Woodmere Academy followed by a year of post-grad at Northfi eld Mount Herman Prep School. He helped Lawerence Woodmere to state fi nals in 2006 and averaged 19.0 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 5.0 assists per game as a senior. A native of Baldwin, N.Y., Rutledge graduated from Monmouth with a Bachelor’s Degree in Com- munications and a concentration in radio/TV. DERRICK DUNLAP Assistant Coach • First Season • Central Connecticut ‘96 Derrick Dunlap joins the men’s basketball coaching staff , bringing over a decade of coaching knowl- edge and education and administrative experience to the Pioneer ranks. Most recently, Dunlap served as a volunteer coach for the Riverside Church AAU program, and has been the Bronx Charter elementary school basketball coach for the past three seasons. Previous coaching stints include Howard High in Columbia, Md. for the 2001-02 season, where Dunlap led the team to a 15-8 record. Th e following year he led Crossland High in Temple Hills, Md., to a 17-9 record. He also served as an assistant for three years at Montrose Christian in Rockville, Md., under the legendary coach Stu Vetter, helping the Mustangs to a perennial national ranking. Dunlap played collegiately at Fairfi eld University for three seasons before transferring to Central Con- necticut for his senior season, as the Blue Devils posted a 15-13 record and Dunlap averaged 10 points a game and led the team in assists with 5.4 per game. Serving as a teacher in Washington, D.C. from 1998-2003, Dunlap then moved into the administrative world. He currently serves as the School Administrator for Bronx Arts Charter. He received his bachelor’s degree in Psychology in 1996 from Central Connecticut, and two years later received his Master’s Degree in Elementary Education from Bridgeport. Most recently, he received a second Master’s Degree in Education Supervision and Administration from Johns Hopkins in 2007.

Post opens its regular season as it travels to Al- bany for the Saint Rose Tip-Off tournament Nov. 12-13, playing Saint Anselm and host Saint Rose. On the slate in mid-November is last year’s NCAA East Regional champion Bloomfi eld College. December matchups are highlighted by Long Island rival Adelphi and traditional East Region power LeMoyne. Th e addition of the University of District Columbia to the ECC bumps the conference to nine teams, mean- ing the schools will play each other twice, as opposed to last year’s three-game scheduling. Th e Pioneers open conference play on Dec. 7 at Northern Boulevard foe NYIT, but have almost a month-long break until their next conference meeting at the Pratt Recreation Center against Bridgeport on Jan. 4. With such a rigorous schedule in place, it is certain that the Pioneers will have some challenges to over- come, but Casey believes that any struggles early on will have his team primed to play their best basketball come January when conference play opens in full swing. 2011-12 Men’s Basketball Media Guide C.W.C.W. PPOSTOST PIONEERSPIONEERS 2011-12 Men’s Basketball David Steinberg - President, Long Island University Dr. David J. Steinberg, the ninth president of Long Island University, has served the institution since 1985. Th e son of the late Rabbi Milton Steinberg of Manhattan’s Park Avenue Synagogue, he was born in New York City and was educated at Phillips Academy at Andover, Malvern College in England and Harvard College, from which he graduated magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa. After a Fulbright year at the University of the Philippines and a year at Columbia University on a Woodrow Wilson Fellowship, he returned to Harvard, where he earned an M.A. in East Asian studies in 1963, and a Ph.D. in history in 1964. Dr. Steinberg also has received several honorary degrees.

He began his teaching career in the Department of History at the University of Michigan, where he rose to the rank of full professor. In 1973, he joined the administration of Brandeis University as executive assistant to the president, becoming vice president and university secretary in 1977.

Th e author of numerous books and articles on Southeast Asia and, in particular, Philippine history, Dr. Steinberg has taught, lectured and written about this important area of the world for a third of a century. His fi rst book, “Philippine Collaboration in World War II,” won the University Press Award in 1969. “Th e Philippines: A Singular and a Plural Place,” now in its third edi- tion, was described by U.S. Ambassador to the Philippines Nicholas Platt as “the best single-volume guide to understanding the Administration Philippines, past and present.” He also edited and co-authored both editions of “In Search of Southeast Asia,” one of the major textbooks on the area. Dr. Steinberg recently collaborated with top scholars from around the world to co-author “Th e Emergence of Modern Southeast Asia,” a new and multifaceted history of this complex region. In addition, he is a co-author of “Religion and Religiosity in the Philippines and Indonesia: Essays on State, Society and Public Creeds,” which was published in 2005.

Dr. Steinberg was a member of the international observer team that monitored the Philippine presidential elections when Corazon Aquino defeated Ferdinand Marcos. He has written numerous op-ed pieces and has been a consultant to UN agencies, the United States government, the Ford Foundation and others.

He and his wife, Joan, a chanteuse and real estate executive, reside in McGrath House on the C.W. Post Campus. Th e couple has two Cavalier King Charles spaniels, whom they sometimes bring to football games on campus. His greatest personal accom- plishment: raising his two superb sons, Noah and Jonah. His greatest pleasure: watching his grandchildren grow. Paul H. Forestell - Provost, C.W. Post Paul H. Forestell, a professor of psychology and an internationally renowned marine mammal scientist, was appointed provost of the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University in July 2008. A seasoned administrator, Dr. Forestell served as vice president of the Pacifi c Whale Foundation in Hawaii, as dean of undergraduate programs at Southampton College of Long Island University, and as associate dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at C.W. Post.

As provost, Dr. Forestell leads one of the New York metropolitan area’s most respected private university campuses, with an enrollment of nearly 5,700 undergraduate, 3,100 graduates and 2,300 continuing education students. He is responsible for campus operations, program development, admissions and recruitment, retention, fi nancial aid, athletics, student aff airs, public safety, and buildings and grounds.

His collaborative leadership style has contributed greatly to enhancing the student-centered mission of the University. In 2008, Dr. Forestell established the Division of Student Retention & Academic Support Services at C.W. Post to assist students in achieving academic and career success. A champion of experiential learning, he coordinates study abroad and fi eld research op- portunities for students, and teaches classes in whale and dolphin behavior.

Dr. Forestell graduated from the University of New Brunswick in Canada with a bachelor’s degree in psychology and philoso- phy in 1972 and a master’s degree in experimental psychology in 1976. He earned a Ph.D. in comparative psychology from the University of Hawaii in 1988. He is the author of several peer-reviewed science articles and four books, including “Humpbacks of Hawai’i: Th e Long Journey Back.” 2011-12 Men’s Basketball Media Guide C.W.C.W. PPOSTOST PIONEERSPIONEERS 2011-12 Men’s Basketball Bryan Collins, Director of Athletics Bryan Collins is in his fi fth year as the Director of Athletics at C.W. Post. Under Collins’ lead- ership, the Pioneers’ athletic programs have seen a continual rise in both the regional and national levels.

During Collins’ tenure, the Pioneers have achieved both athletic and academic success. Notable achievements include 22 conference titles as well as NCAA championship titles from the 2007 women’s lacrosse and 2009 and 2010 men’s lacrosse teams.

Th is past season, the men’s and women’s cross country, women’s swimming, baseball, men’s lacrosse, softball and women’s lacrosse teams all participated in NCAA tournaments.

C.W. Post boasts many of the most top-ranked programs in the country that are frequently ranked in national polls. Th e Pioneers fi nished fi rst in the East Coast Conference Commissioner’s Cup standings for 2009-10, the second Cup win (2006-07) during Collins’ tenure. Prior to the 2007-08 academic year, the football and fi eld hockey programs gained admission into the esteemed Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference.

Off the fi eld, Collins has included community service as a part of his players’ responsibilities. Among the eff orts since his arrival have been visitations to the St. Mary’s Children’s Hospital in Bayside, N.Y., while also volunteering with other charitable organizations such as Habitat for Humanity and the Make-A-Wish Foundation. During the 2008-09 academic year, C.W. Post student-athletes completed over 3,200 hours of service.

Collins is responsible for the creation of a department mission statement based on the foundation of athletic excellence as well as the initiation of the Academic Commitment Excellence (ACE) program, designed to improve attendance and academic achievements in the classroom. In addition, C.W. Post athletic programs are mentored by campus faculty and staff through the Adopt-A-Faculty program.

During 2007-08, Collins established a Student-Athlete Orientation seminar and handbook as well as an annual student- athlete awards banquet to recognize both athletic and academic success. Th e department also established an Academic Honor Roll to honor student-athletes’ who receive a minimum 3.0 grade point average.

Collins has overseen improvements to the athletic facili- ties on campus, including the installation of FieldTurf on Hickox Field as well as a new state-of-the art sound system for the sta- dium. In addition, all the outdoor athletic fi elds have undergone improvements to their playing surface. Th e Pratt Recreation Center Gymnasium, home to the basketball and volleyball teams,

athletic administration athletic received a new sound system as well as a working press row table for media and game operations staff .

A former student-athlete at St. John’s University, Collins played linebacker on the Red Storm’s football team and was the recipient of the Dr. Peter Vitulli Award, given to the St. John’s student-athlete who demonstrated the most courage, persever- ance, dedication and spirit of self-sacrifi ce in seeking to attain the highest ideals of sportsmanship. Collins received his bachelor’s degree in Business Administration in 1987.

Collins and his wife, Patti, reside in Sayville, N.Y. with their son, Tyler (15) and daughter, Megan (10).
