Terrigal – Matcham 20082009 Year Book Presidents Report

The 2008‐2009 season has been another very enjoyable and successful one for the mighty Bellbirds. We saw 8 teams make it through to the semi‐finals with 4 of those playing in the grand final (16B Maroon 14A, 12B Gold, 11A). Unfortunately none of the teams managed to take home the title this year (an interesting fact for this year’s grand final winners was that 9 of the teams who won the toss lost the game). Congratulations to the 12B Maroon team who were minor premiers.

The performance and efforts of all 189 bellbirds is congratulated with fun and friendship by far the most important part of playing our great game. We had 14 competition teams this year plus 2 super 8 teams. We fielded a team in every age group and division with some divisions have several Terrigal Matcham teams. We have also had many players representing the Central Coast in representative teams and well done to those players.

This year saw the introduction of the combined 13/14 age group, this resulted in upheaval to many teams and some uneven competition, it is not certain that this format will continue next season. However it is likely that the combined 15/16 age group will continue.

I would also like to make special mention to all the Under 16's boys who have played their last year of cricket in Juniors this year and many if not all of them are moving onto Seniors next year. Most of this group of boys has been playing with Terrigal Matcham since the Under 10 ‘s or 11’s, some before that spending time in Kanga cricket before moving on to what was the Under 9 non comp team competition. Terrigal Matcham has been fielding 3 teams in this particular age group every year ‐ something that hadn't been done for many years, if ever before. This tradition/following is now being replicated in the age groups below making us one of the strongest junior clubs on the Coast! It is very pleasing to see cricket expand with more and more people both children and parents participate in this great sport.

The success of our In‐2‐Cricket Program continues with 90 budding young cricketers playing at Duffy’s oval on a Saturday morning. A big thank you to Mic Pilon and Lindy Peters for all their time and effort in making it happen and to all the dedicated helpers they had which ultimately made each session a fun one for the children involved.

I would like to extend a big thank you to all our coaches and managers of their respective teams for all their hard work and dedication throughout the season. The club could not exist without all the behind the scenes work that happens by the committee. A special thanks to Jennie Paul, Alain, Liz, Kent, Len, Barry and Darren.

This year saw our sponsorship continue from 'Breakers' formerly Terrigal Wamberal Country Club. Thank you Ken Pearson and all your staff for your generous contribution. We hope to keep this association with you in the successful years to come.

To all our players ‐ enjoy your winter sports and we look forward to seeing you all back for another fantastic season of cricket in 2009/2010.

Yours in cricket Geoff Patterson

We actually had a great season considering that most of the boys had not played before, they all did really well and improved in all areas by the end of the season. We actually won most of our games. A few of the boys stood out with exceptional batting skills, some with excellent bowling and fielding. The parents were great especially those who stood up to umpire and score week after week. Their help was much appreciated

Terrigal – Matcham 20082009 Year Book 10 MAROON We have had a great year with a group of lovely boys in the team who have played with great sportsmanship and enthusiasm. All of the boys have improved their own game over the season and the team grew in confidence and ability. We finished 9th out of 14 which was a good result for us. On behalf of the team, a huge thank you to Terry Gahan and Matt Apps for coaching, to Leon Booth for scoring most weeks, to Nic Kelly for inputting the scores each week and to ALL the parents for supporting the boys week in week out.

Lachlan Apps: Lachlan is a dedicated cricketer who takes the game very seriously and shows great passion and commitment. He proved to be an excellent all rounder with particular skills as a bowler. His maturity and level head had a very positive influence on the team and Lachlan is always quick to support his team mates with words of encouragement or to throw a few balls for them. He is definitely the teams Mr Cricket!

Dylan Booth: Dylan is the full package‐loads of enthusiasm, lots of cheek and a pretty handy cricketer! His speed and agility produced some great fielding and bowling and a retirement in the batting proved to be a useful innings. Dylan always encourages his team mates, participates in the game with a smile and is a very valuable team member.

James Bunt: This was James first season of Cricket and his enthusiasm and courage shone through. He took some valuable and was very keen to learn and to improve his game. He shows great sportsmanship, never complains and has added great value to the team. He has produced a great first season and we hope he comes back for more.

Fionn Dale: Fionn is a serious cricketer who improved his game through the season to become a competent all rounder. Fionn is a great sport and displays a maturity and balance to the team. Fionn practiced hard and was keen to learn more and improve his game. He proved to be a great team player and good leader.

Jack Gahan: Jack’s enthusiasm for the game was second to none. His words of encouragement to his team mates were frequent and his all round ability added a real strength to the team. Jack took out the fielding award for the team and was well deserved. He had some great innings as a batsman and had some flashes of brilliance as a bowler.

Jack Howard: Jack Howard unfortunately had to leave the team due to relocation at the start of 2009. Prior to leaving Jack dazzled us with his bowling prowess scaring his opponents as the ball thundered down the . Jack is a superb all rounder with passion and enthusiasm for the game, he had several great innings and took some handy catches.

Tom Kelly: Tom played a great season, again proving to be a good all rounder. He approached each game with enthusiasm and pleasure. He proved to be a good Wicketkeeper and found his rhythm in bowling taking some handy wickets and a few great catches.

Oliver Patterson: Oliver was by far the biggest personality on the team with his enthusiasm and endless supply of jokes! Ollie proved he can play any position competently and displayed great skills as Wicketkeeper. His all round skills gave a great strength to the team.

Josh Phillips: Josh was possibly the quietest achiever on the team but proved himself to be a competent cricketer especially in bowling. Josh took out the award for bowling and he should be very proud of his performance all round. Josh never complained demonstrated great respect and loyalty and we look forward to seeing more of him next season.

7

Terrigal – Matcham 20082009 Year Book Drew Ridge : Drew was another mature individual who ticked all the boxes! He plays the game with enthusiasm, sportsmanship and skill. Drew was awarded the Coaches award for his maturity, respect, sportsmanship and attention to the game. Drew participated in the development squad and will be an asset to the squad as much as he is an asset to our team.

Matt Roper: Matt was the youngest member of our team and yet he played equally as well as anyone else. Recently migrated from the UK, Matt began the season warily but quickly found his stride and proved to be able to do everything. He has grown in confidence and ability through the season taking some useful wickets and scoring a few handy runs. Well done Matt.

Bradley Staines: Brad is a very enthusiastic player with a broad ability and a mature approach. He is a friendly and agreeable boy and a very popular team member. Brad has proved that he can play any role in the team to a high standard and gave 100% each week.

Sam Wales: Sam is another quiet achiever who delivered an outstanding season of batting to take out the trophy for the season. Sam plays the game with a smile and a positive approach which he shares with others. He scored over 100 runs during the season which was a great result and well deserved. Sam also proved to be a handy fielder and a valuable team member.

Terrigal – Matcham 20082009 Year Book

10 GOLD Kobe Allison: Kobe has the potential to do anything when he puts his mind to it. Fast opening bowler with the ability to hit the ball hard. Kobe's best bowling performance 2 ‐7 off 3 and batting 24 runs all 4’s.

Lochie Allison: Lochie the youngest member of our squad and maybe in the under10's comp. One of our two trusty wicket keepers which he is very passionate about and fearless. A promising middle order batsman, his love of the game was infectious in the team. His highlight was retiring twice and his best bowling 2 ‐7 off 2.

Toby Bowditch: Toby proved himself to be our solid opening batter, consistently scoring runs and often retiring. He is a very reliable bowler proving to be very handy in the field as well. His best bowling 2 ‐ 3 off 2.

Lain Carr: Lain was our Mr Reliable with the ball consistently restricting the opposition batsmen. His batting improved out of sight towards the end of the season proving to be our other great opening batter. In round 15 he retired within 15mins of the game starting, his best bowling was 3 ‐ 2 off 2 and one of those overs was a maiden.

Isaac Chislett: Started the season as our quiet achiever, ended the season with great enthusiasm in the field lending lots of support to his team mates. His confidence improved greatly with his batting as the season progressed consistently getting runs for his team when needed. His best bowling 2 ‐ 6 off 2.

Nathan Foster: 2nd youngest member of our squad, has the potential to make a great cricketer. With his strengths in the field pulling off some remarkable catches and as exceptional bowler for his age. Unfortunately his family are relocating to QLD we will miss him greatly in our squad next year. Chipping in with the bat where needed his best bowling 2 ‐ 10 off 3.

Cooper Fullerton: Consistently filled the spot of our top order batsmen who retired more often than not, this was reflected in the batting award he received. Very handy with the ball and even proved to be a great leg spin bowler. His fielding was always exceptional with some amazing direct hit runouts at crucial times in the matches. Coopers best bowling 2‐9 off 3.

Harry Maskell: The senior player in our team consistently got runs. He retired most weeks then came back in to help his team build a competitive score. His bowling saw him pick up wickets in crucial times of the match as for his fielding as some remarkable catches were taken. Harry's best bowling 2‐7 off 2.

Chaz Schram: A happy go lucky player that always gave 110% every week. He bowled well at the end of most innings restricting the other teams scores. His fielding and batting improved throughout the season. His bowling reflects the award that he picked up being our best bowler. His best figures were 2 ‐ 2 off 2.

Jett Schram: Proved to be our most outstanding fielder saved our team numerous amount of runs on the boundary, with some great catches as well he received the fielding award. He found some confidence with his batting and bowling towards the middle of the season which say him scoring some runs and taking wickets. Best bowling 3‐9 off 3.

11

Terrigal – Matcham 20082009 Year Book Hunter Thompson: Hunter was our second wicket keeper who continued to improve throughout the season. Landed a great stumping at the end of the season with many runouts to add to his wicket keeping achievements. Batting in the middle order and his bowling improved as the weeks went on. His best bowling was 1‐4 off 2.

Jade Van Dartel: We all enjoyed having Jade in our team this year, her laid back attitude towards the game was a great pleasure to watch. Her bowling towards the end of the season became more consistent with some wickets being achieved. Her best bowling 2 ‐ 8 off 2.

As the coach of the youngest side in the under 10 comp we finished 5th with victories over 2 teams who finished in the top 4. The whole team has improved throughout the season and I have enjoyed watching the boys cricket skills improve as the weeks went on.

Good luck to all the boys who will go up next year to the u/11's comp, I hope you all have as much fun and success as you did this season.

To all the parents of the team a big thank you for all your support you gave me and the team over the season, we would not have enjoyed our Saturday mornings as much without all the mum's and dad's and grandparents that came to watch and give the kids there support. Thank you also to Michele who scored for us all year and to those who bought me a well needed coffee.

As a coach our cricket season can be defined by 3 things ‐ results, the enjoyment and the love of the game, not necessarily in that order. Over the season we won our fair share of games and lost some in drastic fashion. The kids improved their cricket but one comment that sticks in my mind, “this bunch are great sports and play fair” which was repeated many times by opposing coaches. Which is a credit to the team and their families.

Rhiley Carr; Was really focussed this year and had a strong season with bat and ball which is reflected in his stats for both the club and district.

Toby Dickinson; Starting to fire at the end of the season , part time wicket keeper and medium pace bowler, took some good catches in the field an improving player.

Jorden Farncomb; Unlimited potential, had a good start to the season sharing in a 100 run plus partnership plus a solid bowler and terrific in the field.

Jack Meyn; Probably our biggest improver for the year went from struggling with the ball to opening bowler and found form with the bat at the end of the season.

Sam Hoad; Our reliable opening batsman who has improved his bowling to be very consistent with line and length and has taken some good catches.

Brandon Mathews; Very consistent bowler who has taken some terrific catches and has worked hard on his batting which is starting to be an asset.

Luke Mcguiness; Great season, his team contributions in fielding and batting in particular and steady bowling have been great.

Jack Hide; Quite achiever with a perfect batting technique and a solid bowler with a great team spirit.

Jayden Moody; Solid batsman who has held the innings together on various occasions, good fielder and is developing as a good solid player.

Jeremy Nix ; Another big improver who has been one of our most consistent bowlers at the right end of the season and also has hit form with the bat.

Andrew Vickery ; Solid batsman, great team person and developing behind the stumps.

Zak Van Dartel; Starting to fire with bat and ball at the right end of the season, going into the semis anything is possible.

Just a note to thank our manager Mick Van Dartel for all the help throughout the season and also all the parents who have helped out at training and on game day either scoring or umpiring it was greatly appreciated.

11 B The Terrigal Matcham 11B’s had a great time in season 2008/09, as did everyone associated with the team. On the field we had some great performances and played consistently well throughout the season, – but more notably was the improvement from our first game to our last, which had everyone talking!

They all had some great times, became great friends and went out and gave every game their best shot – it was great to coach such a great bunch of kids who look forward to playing every Saturday, are keen on the field and supported each other as a team!

A big thanks to Jaime Tighe, Paul Collins, Verity Curtis, Kerry Allen, Rob Sirio and Johan DeKock for all of their brilliant help week in, week out with scoring and umpiring!

Our spot on the ladder was no reflection of how well this team played, more a reflection of some ill‐considered and unbalanced scheduling by CCJCA which saw the guys miss out on their fair share of games, and fair share of opponents.

However a big congratulations to the whole team, and a big thanks to their parents, grandparents, brothers and sisters for coming out and supporting them each and every week! Hope to see you all back next season.

And now to the up and coming talent for the years to come:

Manning Allen‐Scott: One of the biggest improvers, and loudest voices on the field and thoroughly enjoyed his cricket. A great season Manning!

Macklan Collins: Without doubt the most improved player this season – took some brilliant wickets and scored plenty of runs, and a great set of hand in slips! Well done Mack!

Kaleb Kampling‐Sharwood: Turned out to be one of our most consistent bowlers – always willing to try something new! Another really great improver! Congrats on a great season Kaleb.

Rhys Tighe: Rhys was the stand‐out bowler by far! A great season with the ball, and always had the batsmen jumping! Another great season Rhys!

Lachlan Vane‐Tempest: You could always rely on Lachie to be the life of the field, the one to keep everyone in high spirits when we were struggling – a lightning quick bowler too! Thanks for a great season!

Luke Curtis: Our stand‐out batsman and a great wicketkeeper, Luke is no doubt going to be a big asset to this club in the years to come, One fantastic season Luke! Well done!

James Vella: Another standout performer with the bat, James was really keen throughout the whole season and thoroughly enjoyed every moment. Congratulations on a great effort.

Adam Walker: One of our stand‐out fielders and a really keen batsman with a good eye for the ball. Keep up the cricket! Adam could have scored a lot more, but copped more than his fair share of some really unlucky balls this year, but no doubt there will be plenty of time at the crease in the years to come! 18

Terrigal – Matcham 20082009 Year Book

Etienne DeKock: You would never believe him if he told you it was his first year of cricket! A handy bowler and a great season with the bat, and a really great kid! Thanks for being part of it Etienne!

Callum Verschour: 4/6 on his first ever game: Need we say any more! A great season Callum, and hope there are many more to come!

Kelan McLaughlin: Kelan had a great first season, and showed some great improvement all of the way throughout, and towards the end guided us through some tricky games with the bat! Thanks for a great season Kelan!

Dom Sirio: The keenest of a very keen bunch! Dom was an outstanding talent in every aspect of the game! A great batsman, bowler and a brilliant fielder. Kept the batsmen under immense pressure with his “Send the bails to Wales”, nice Dom but time to find some new material in time for next season ey?!?!

Terrigal – Matcham 20082009 Year Book 12A

This season saw a new combination of players making up the 12A’s. The boys quickly got to know each other and built up a great sense of teamwork and support throughout the year. All boys developed their particular skills, training well and gaining momentum throughout the season. As a team, we displayed awesome attacking skills by being the team that took more wickets than any other, and in a very tight competition, showed determination to make the Semi‐Finals.

With two of our key players unavailable on Semi‐Final day the boys took it bravely to The Entrance and were in the game to the end. Many thanks to Jack Gahan from the 10’s who fielded brilliantly as a substitute player. In alphabetical order the players were:

Jaime Brien: Jaime developed great leadership skills as captain setting an attacking field and making good use of our bowling strengths. He scored over 100 runs with his bravest knock in the Semi‐Final. He developed as an excellent slips fielder and proved a menacing bowler taking 8 wickets with best figures of 2/2.

Conor Dale: Conor continued to bowl an outstanding line and length, frustrating even the best of batsmen, taking 10 wickets at less than 2 runs per over. He was a key player in the team taking so many wickets this year and always plays in the spirit of the game.

Johnathon Dobb: Johnny contributed well to all areas of the game, but has especially matured as a bowler this year, taking 6 wickets very economically at well under 2 an over. He worked hard in the field and has developed very good technique with the bat. A very promising cricketer.

Scott Drinkwater: Scott has a natural bowling technique which will continue to improve with time. He was one of our strike bowlers and saved his best figures of 2‐9 for the Semi‐Final very nearly taking a hat‐trick and putting us right back into the game. He followed this up with a determined knock of 21 runs.

Lachlan Drake: Lachlan contributed to all areas of the game scoring nearly 100 runs and taking 9 wickets and 5 catches. He showed a particular development with the bat developing his technique while increasing his repertoire of shots. A great competitor who loves his cricket.

Kane Elder: Kane proved a handful for all teams with his left arm wrist spin. He was our top wicket taker and was only a couple of wickets from being the leading wicket taker in the competition. He really put some thought and practice into his bowling. Kane could score quickly with the bat and was always handy in the field.

Thomas Ferguson: Tommy showed steady development in all areas of the game. This was displayed in his powerful 52 run attack of Woy Woy late in the season. His bowling accuracy improved markedly through the season and he was always on the mark in the field with the equal most run outs in the team.

Patrick Flint: Patrick proved a very good all‐rounder with a healthy average of 17 with the bat which got the team across the line on many occasions. With 8 wickets, Patrick could be counted on to break a partnership with the ball in hand and continued to be very handy in the field showing speed and a great arm.

21

Terrigal – Matcham 20082009 Year Book Daniel Heuston: Daniel continued to show great commitment to his cricket this year and had fantastic results in all areas of the game. His in‐close catching and fielding was outstanding and earned him the most catches in our team as well as in the competition. He scored 138 runs including a 50 against Wyong, and bowled a great line and length earning him 11 wickets at less than 2 runs an over. What a contribution.

Jack O’Mally: Jack was an outstanding team player always encouraging his mates on and off the field. Even though he was forced to miss a number of games because of an operation he turned up each week to support his team‐mates. He developed a very difficult to play loopy off spin that had batsmen in all sorts of trouble and was solid with the bat.

Tommy O’Neill: Tommy had another fantastic season. While he may not have got the stats to show it, he led by example with his natural cricket ability. He put pressure on the batsmen with the most economical bowling of the team, took 4 run outs and 5 great catches. Tommy displayed these same natural skills as part‐time wicket‐keeping including a brilliant stumping.

Jacob Shanley: Jacob gave the team a solid base behind the stumps as wicket‐keeper and was second in wicketkeeper catches in the association. He worked extremely hard on his batting and took out the batting award with 139 runs for the season. His positive talk and support for his team mates was nonstop, making him a great asset for the team.

The team became very independent cricketers this year with Jaime as captain and Tommy O and Daniel as vice‐captains working together to provide great strategy. The boys were an absolute pleasure to work with and were constantly congratulated by other teams for the spirit in which they played the game. I hope all these young cricketers come back for more next year.

Terrigal – Matcham 20082009 Year Book

12 MAROON – Minor Premiers Terrigal Matcham Maroon Under 12B’s had a great year all up, completing the season as Minor Premiers, losing only one game during the season proper. This was due to having a team of great young men who played and trained as mates and enjoyed their own and each others successes. On the field solid contributions by all, particularly with the ball, led to their success. This combined with their genuine comradery for each other made them a joy to coach.

We must also mention the band of dedicated parents, who not only ensured the boys got to training and games, but also who assisted with the scoring duties.

The boys enthusiasm and enjoyment of the game was great to see. Whether winning or losing, they showed great sportsmanship and delight in being with their friends.

Unfortunately in the semi finals, we came up against a Wyong outfit at their home ground, whose two inform batsmen dominated us and knocked us out of the competition. Whilst they were behind for most of the match, they didn’t get down and were as happy towards the end of the day as they were at the start. Unfortunately I as coach, and with many parents, felt the disappointment of this occasion for the team more than the boys. Special mention to Bayden who played the semi final with a broken arm, not wanting to let his teammates down, he showed true champion qualities in his performance.

The season itself gave us a great demonstration of young men enjoying mateship and sport together, and giving great delight to their coach.

Bayden Jones, “The Swing King”; Bayden has had a stellar year with the ball, bamboozling many a batsmen with his line, length and swing from around the wicket. He has picked up 14 wickets at an average of 2 and finished ranked second in the competition. His best bowling was 4 for 2 against Umina Green. His economy rate was exceptional, only conceding 28 runs from 48 overs. With the bat, Bayden a self confessed number 11, grew in confidence and improved his defence and technique. He finished the season proper with a top score of 3, making 5 runs in total . Always dependable in the field he claimed 2 catches and one sensational runout by direct hit from the outfield against Woy Woy.

Thomas Hoare, “Thor – The God of Thunder”; When Tom batted, everyone waited with anticipation as the best way to describe how he approached his batting was ‘shock and awe’. The biggest hitter in the team, on his day he could tear apart an attack. His 26 against Umina Green was electrifying and had his team mates and the crowd on their feet. Tom made a total of 47 runs for the year. ‘Thor’ made the most of his “almost 6 feet” frame to bowl line and length with some nice outswing, reminiscent of Joel ‘Big Bird’ Garner. He collected 7 wickets at an average of 5.6 with a best bowling of 3 for 7 against Kincumber Avoca. With the biggest hands in the team, Tom was always safe in the field, taking 6 catches for the season and being ranked 9th in the competition.

Thomas Cansick, “The Rookie”; Tom in his first year of cricket, was put to the test in his first game where going in at number 10 on a difficult ground with runs needed to win. ‘Tick’ survived and guided the team to its first victory. Since that time Tom has established himself as an opening batsman with determination and a great defensive technique. Many a time seeing off the new

25

Terrigal – Matcham 20082009 Year Book ball, he finished the year with a top score of 13 and making 45 runs in his rookie season. Tom’s bowling developed and improved through the year, finishing with 4 wickets at an average of 11.3, and finishing the season with a great catch.

Nathanial Gittoes, “The Terrigal Express”; One of the competitions quickest bowlers, on his day Nathan was as explosive as they come. He terrorised many opposition batsmen with his pace as well as his team mates in the nets. Nathan finished the season as the leading wicket taker in the competition, snaring 15 wickets at an average of 3.1. His best bowling of 4 for 0 against Wyong, was achieved in 2 overs at a time when the team was defending only a 17 run lead. Always very talkative in the field, Nathan took some spectacular catches, finishing the year with 4. In the last game of the season, Nathan assisted the opposition in the field and in the space of 4 overs he ran out two of his team mates and brilliantly catching a third. Without a lot of opportunities with the bat, Nathan scored 14 runs for the season with a highest score of 4 (achieved on two occasions).

Jarrett Boland, “Mr Dependable”; A true team player, ‘JB’ was able to contribute to his team in all facets of the game. As a batsman, Jarrett made 63 runs in total, with a highest score of 29 against Umina Green, almost batting out the whole innings as an opener. He made further contributions to the team with the ball by taking 4 wickets at an average of 9.8 and a best bowling of 2 for 7 against Lisarow‐Ourimbah. His fielding during the season was exceptional, taking 6 catches for the year, all top class efforts and finishing the season ranked 5th in the competition.

Joshua Arms, “The Little Master”; “Armsy’ started the season with a bang with the bat, scoring over a hundred runs in the first half of the season. He finished the season with 145 runs with a highest score of 49. This placed him 9th overall in the competition. Josh started bowling medium pace for the start of the year and after struggling for the first 2 matches, made the change to leg spin with immediate success, taking 3 for 2 against Woy Woy, his best bowling figures for the year. He finished the year with 11 wickets at an average of 4.36 and placing equal 9th in the competition. During the season Josh’s fielding took off and by the seasons end he had claimed 7 catches ranking him 4th in the competition. Overall, Josh finished the year ranked 3 in the competition’s “Champion Player” rankings.

Thomas Spackman, “The Smiling Assassin”; ‘Spacko’ started the season unsure of what pace to bowl and continually changed his bowling technique. He worked extremely hard and after much practice learnt to slow down and bowl a nice medium pace ball that tailed away, all the time with a smile on his face. For his efforts he claimed an excellent 10 wickets finishing equal 12th in the bowling for the competition. Reward for hard work came as he became a major wicket taker for the team in the second half of the season, finishing with some wonderful bowling figures with none better than his 4 for 7 against Doyalson Wyee in the last round (with a further 2 wickets in the second innings). His smile then got bigger! His batting technique improved during the season, finished with a total of 15 runs with a highest score of 6 not out against Umina Red. In the field he was always reliable, taking 2 fine catches.

Vaughan Kernan, “The Chief“; as team Captain, ‘Vernan’ led from the front all year, inspiring his team to the success they have enjoyed. A contributor in all areas, Vaughan accumulated 110 runs for the season with a highest score of 29 not out against The Entrance and scoring 10 or better on 5 occasions. As one of our strike bowlers, he picked up 6 wickets for the season at an average of 7.5 and bowling an impressive 15 maidens. His best performance with the ball was 2 for 2 against Umina Red. In the field, he shared the wicket keeping duties taking 6 catches as keeper, one in the field and contributing to 3 runouts. From keeper, he kept the team on their toes and gave them

26

Terrigal – Matcham 20082009 Year Book great encouragement throughout the season. It should be noted that Vaughan ranked 11th in the competitions “Champion Player” rankings.

Brendan Wouterlood, “Mr Consistency”; ‘Brenda’ had a great all round year, being a big part of the team’s success. Contributing runs every time he batted, Brendan scored a total of 95 runs for the season; with his highest score of 21 not out against Umina Red. He finished 15th in the competition for batting. With the ball he took 10 wickets at an average of 5.7 with a best bowling of 3 for 4 against Woy Woy and finishing equal 12th for bowling in the competition. An outstanding effort with the ball considering he spent much of his time in the field with the gloves on. His efforts in the field were rewarded with 5 catches in total, 3 as keeper. His consistency was demonstrated by his placing 9th in the competitions ‘Champion Player’ rankings.

Dane Clarke, “Mr Team”; ‘Dano’ supported his team all through the season both on the field and at training and made solid contributions to the team effort. Improved and accurate bowling led to Dane snaring 4 wickets for the season, finishing with a of 10 and a best bowling of 2 for 7 against Lisarow Ourimbah. Dane always batted with great heart, scoring 15 runs with a highest score of 5 against The Entrance In the field Dane assisted in 2 runouts during the year.

Mitchell Lyons, “The Quiet Achiever”; With solid contributions with the bat and ball, ‘Mitch’ has had an excellent year. Scoring a total of 58 runs for the year, with a best performance of 21 against Umina Red. Against Woy Woy Mitchell claimed the season’s only hatrick and giving him his best bowling figures for the year of 3 for 4, continuing that good form with the ball he took 9 wickets in total for the season at an average of 4.9 and always bowled economically. Always solid and reliable in the field, Mitchell claimed one catch for the year off his own bowling as part of his hat trick.

Anthony Greaves, “The Spin King”; Small in stature but big in heart, ‘Greavesy’ gave all he could for his team. Bowling beautifully flighted off spin, he was a consistent wicket taker through the entire season. Officially he took 8 wickets at an average of 6.5, but took another 3 wickets as 12th man against Terrigal Matcham Gold. His confidence with the bat increased during the year, making 15 runs with a high score of 6 against Wyong, which came at a vital time in that game. Anthony was courageous in the field taking 4 catches, with some requiring him to put his body on the line.

12 GOLD

This was the second year I’d had most of these boys, with 4 new boys joining the team. I set a goal of improving on last year where we ran 6th, and we achieved this in fantastic style, winning 7 consecutive games on the way to qualifying for the grand final. This was a terrific achievement, particularly with 4 new players in their first year. Of particular satisfaction to me was that all of our results were genuine team efforts, with everybody contributing through the season, rather than relying on outstanding individual performances. I look forward to seeing these boys play away from Chertsey next year and getting more reward for their shots along the ground.

David BELL: First year with the team for David, who generally bowled tightly, none more so than in the semi final, where he bowled the final over with Umina needing 5 runs, and their rampaging retired opener having returned to the crease, David’s bowling restricted Umina to 1 run and saw us home.

Ben COOK: Memo to batsmen: DON’T run on Benny’s arm. Unfortunately for a couple of opposition players, this advice is too late, as he pounced on the ball and unleashed lethal throws right beside the bails, turning tight runs into run outs. Took a couple of smart catches as well, and deserved the fielding award.

Aaron CAHILL: Azza’s keeping improved another level this year, particularly his positioning and getting up to the stumps to take plenty of hot throws. He showed his versatility by taking a spectacular diving catch without the gloves as well. Outstanding semi final, sharing a 91 run stand, and showing his maturity and cool, setting the field when the game was headed for a tight and exciting finish.

Matt GARDINER: Big improvement with the ball, bowling accurate outswingers at good pace and taking plenty of wickets as a result. Looks sound with the bat, but needs to watch the ball all the way onto the bat to convert into scores (sound familiar?).

Hamish GOODEN: “H” is a good all round cricketer. Played straighter as the season went on, and looked better and better with the bat as a result. Also bowled nice and straight, chipping in with plenty of wickets. Good pair of hands in the field, taking some smart catches. Apparently pretty good with the lip as well when fielding in close, so good that I wasn’t even aware until brought to my attention by a couple of opposition batsmen!

Daniel GUIDER: Always looked solid with the bat, doing a good job opening when the stronger bowlers are usually on. Just need to be a bit more aggressive with the bad balls to convert your good defence into good scores. Usually bowled a good line and length and also has a good pair of hands in the field. He’s the iceman under high balls.

Toby HUGHES: Toby loves to hit the ball hard. He looked a lot better this year by concentrating hard on playing straighter. Just need to get our shot selection right, going softer at the good balls, and you will bat a lot longer and make some big scores.

Justin HUNT: Added another string to his bow this year, bowling some leg spin and deceiving a few batsmen with plenty of flight. Showed he is a big match performer, making his highest score in the

31

Terrigal – Matcham 20082009 Year Book semi final , sharing a 91 run stand with Azza. Wasn’t satisfied with that though, took 3 wickets as well.

Michael TURNER: “Never run on a misfield”. Michael was run out a couple of times after hitting cracking shots and running on the misfield. He can play all the shots, and with a touch of luck would have scored plenty of runs. Has a terrific arm and he took 3 catches in the semi final as back up keeper.

Mackenzie WADE: Macca turned up for his first year of cricket and bowled some fantastic leg spin, but for a few dropped chances, would have taken more wickets, he was generally too good for batsmen. He will take plenty of wickets in the future as batting improves and they can get closer to his bowling.

Jack WARR: Set the bar high early, taking 4 wickets in only his second game. Although that was always going to be hard to maintain, he usually bowled a tidy line and length, and ended with 8 wickets at average of 7.5 which is a good effort in his first year.

Darcy WAYMOUTH: Another first‐timer, he bowled left arm swing at good pace, and troubled plenty of batsmen. Touch more consistency and he will take plenty of wickets, but still took 9 wickets at average of 7.22. Looked good with the bat as well, always looking to score and go after the bad ball. Best behaved, best mannered and best listener, and that was reflected in his improvement, and he received the Coaches Award as a result. Outstanding first year.

Thanks to Sonya and Doug for the thankless job of scoring and for the parents that both helped and supported their boys through the season.

33

Terrigal – Matcham 20082009 Year Book 14A I hope all our boys consolidated their love of cricket!

I would have to say the boys were the most "fun to coach" kids. Always smiling and joking and paying out on each other. They were not always serious about their cricket, not always a bad thing, given ability to mentally destroy you sometimes! After all that's why we play, for the fun of it. Winning is just the icing on the cake.

During the year we had many instances of the whole team culture coming into play with help being offered in the form of 3 coaches. Many thanks to Peter Colley and Andre Stolz. Plus much help when needed from John Henwood, Wayne Kemp and Denny Sherwood. Plus the usual great efforts of Jennie Agustin, for her help with everything. Thanks to all the support of all parents too.

So to the cricket field ‐ we played the game hard and in the right spirit.

From the top: Jack Colley showed his exceptional ability to destroy bowling. Sometimes it seemed a little too easy. A great job done by the skipper.

Lloyd Radcliffe showed he can bat well with some classy innings and some run saving off spin bowling.

Kyle James showed great form with the bat and the gloves. Also a great effort to keep the team spirit up with constant chirping behind the stumps.

Kieran Elley improves both as a batsman and bowler. Always tried his guts out at both practise and games.

Max Sherwood contributed with another good year with bat and ball. He kept team spirits high with plenty of encouragement from the outfield.

Nick Kemp was one of the stand out bowlers in the competitions, with his fierce speed. Perhaps unlucky not to get more wickets during the season.

Zac Stolz was generally on full throttle with his batting. Great innings in the semi and excellent bowling too.

Blake Biggs forced his way to our number one bowler by his pace and swing. Fantastic fielder and some useful innings.

Justin Henwood filled an all‐rounder role later in the innings and was very useful with the ball on many occasions. Another boy who tried his guts out.

Declan Drake always played well, consistently both with bat and ball. In any other team he would be a standout. Great effort.

Riley Walker had a great year. He picked his pace up and developed an inswinger to make his bowling even more dangerous.

Sam Collet bowled fantastically particularly with the new ball. Also showed he likes to hurry things up in the latter stage of an innings.

14B

The 2008/09 season saw the Under 14B's team take the field in the new combined 13's/14's age competition with a mixture of new players having their first taste of cricket and others playing together for the first time. The team quickly developed into a very strong unit with all players making a strong contribution towards the team's success throughout the year. The most pleasing aspect from a coach’s point of view was the team's ability to play as a team. On a number of occasions during the year the team showed that they had a lot of depth in both batting and bowling with every player capable of producing a match winning performance when needed. Each player should be very proud of their achievements during the year with all players making a significant contribution to the team's success throughout the whole season. I hope you have enjoyed the friendships of your team mates and had a lot of fun this season. I certainly enjoyed the friendship and company of all the players and you were all a pleasure to coach. You all provided me with lots of enjoyment and fun throughout the year. Hope to see you all back again next year.

Brady Allison; Brady showed throughout the year that he has all skills to develop into an outstanding cricketer in years to come. Regularly scored runs in the middle order with aggressive style of batting with a top scored of 29. Brady finished to year with 104 runs, 10 wickets and 3 catches to top off a great year. A real live wire, who loved to be involved in everything. Brady also played representative cricket during the year.

Andre Bianchini; Bowling and batting left handed Andre finished the year with 69 runs with a top score of 27 not out. Andre showed great speed and skill in the field particularly when fielding in the slips and was often required to take on the wicket keeping duties. Andre continues to enjoy his cricket and was rewarded this year with selection in the Central Coast Rep team. Great year mate well done thanks for all the fun.

Shaun Matthews; Shaun was a real find for the team this year. Shaun developed into a very solid pace bowler and showed throughout the year that he has the potential to have many more successful years in front of him. Shaun also developed his batting as the season went on. Shaun was a great help to me throughout the year by helping out at training and on game day and his manners , behaviour and performance were at a high standard at all times and a real pleasure to coach.

Brad Greaves; A great all round team player. Brad developed into our opening batsman and shows enormous potential with a very solid and sound technique. Brad scored 114 runs for the year with a top score of 48 against Kincumber. With the ball Brad finished the year with 10 wickets with a best performance of 3 for 9. Brad showed he has all the ability to develop into a fine player and I think is ready to take his game to the next level. Brad was great fun to have around and a pleasure to coach.

Mitch Hutton; Mitch showed great all round ability once again this year and was our leading wicket taker with 15 wickets. Mitch was our opening bowler and regularly bowled at a very lively pace and full of energy. Throughout the year Mitch demonstrated his all‐round ability by scoring 87 runs for the year with a top score of 22 and also took 6 catches. Mitch had a great year of cricket and was a real favorite amongst the team. As cool and laidback as they come, Mitch was always happy to bat, bowl and field wherever he was needed and a real pleasure to coach and great fun to have around.

Frank Webber; Frankie had a sensational year both behind the stumps as our wicketkeeper and at the crease as our top order batsman. Scoring 230 runs at an average of 28 Frankie was our leading run scorer with a top score of 60 against Kincumber. Behind the stumps Frankie proved to be able

37

Terrigal – Matcham 20082009 Year Book to handle whatever was bowled at him and also took 3 wickets with his off spinners. Frankie showed his leadership qualities by regularly setting the field and rotating the bowlers in most matches this year was well respected by his team mates. Frankie has a real love and knowledge of the game and was a real character which made him a great team players and great fun. Well done.

Jarrod Mills; Jarrod had a great year of cricket making a number of solid contributions to the team success throughout the year. As a “leftie” in the batting line‐up, Jarrod batted very well all season playing very straight with a top score of 43 against Lisarow. Jarrod proved that he can bat for long periods and was often involved in a number of solid partnerships. Jarrod showed a real improvement with his right arm off spin taking 7 wickets by bowling very accurate and regularly troubled all batsmen. Jarrod also had a very successful representative year. Well done mate.

Nikki Squires; Nikki once again demonstrated all the skill's of a great team player. Nikki performed to a high standard week after week and finished the year with 6 wickets bowling a mixture of pace and leg spin. Nikki worked very hard on all areas of her game particularly at training where she was always showing a great commitment to the team. Nikki was well respected amongst the team and regularly showed that she is more than capable when mixing it with the boys. A real highlight of Nikki's year was her superb innings against Kariong early in the year. Nikki was great fun to have around and kept us all on our toes. A real a pleasure to have in the team.

Jason Cousins; Jason came to us midway during the year and was having his first year of cricket. Jason quickly developed into a great pace bowler by bowling a steady line and length. The highlight of Jason's year was the game against The Entrance where he took 3 for 7 and 2 great catches. Jason proved throughout the year he has a lot of natural ability and was real pleasure to coach. I hope you enjoyed your year with us and I'd like to thank you for your efforts. Well done.

Josh Ryan; Josh once again demonstrated he has all the skills needed to develop into a top line player in years to come. Josh established himself as our opening bowler and regularly caused plenty of problems by bowling at a very lively pace. With the bat Josh scored 140 runs for the year with a top score of 42 against The Entrance. In the field Josh was his usual self by showing great ability to make fielding look very easy. A great throwing arm and good hands make him a great all‐ round cricketer.

Josh Williams; As our opening batsman Josh was extremely successful scoring heavily throughout the year and regularly getting the team off to a solid start. Joey finished with 79 runs for the year with a top score of 38. With the ball Joey regularly troubled the batsmen bowling his medium pace with best figures of 2 for 12. Joey demonstrated the he has a great knowledge of the game and was regularly required to lead the team in the field throughout the year. Joey is a pleasure to coach and great fun to have around. Always respectful and a great team member.

I would like to express my thanks to all the parents and grandparents for their assistance and support during the year. This year we had a number of people helping which made my job a lot more enjoyable. Once again Julie took on the responsibility of scoring which I greatly appreciated. Alain helped with registering the results each game which was a great help. I'd like to thank Darren for his continual work throughout the year in organising team BBQ's, attending training and umpiring. Thanks also to Eddy who organised a sponsor for the team which was appreciated by all. To all others who consistently came each week to encourage their children and support the team I say thanks it made the year most enjoyable.

Paul Mills.

14C GOLD Despite falling one game short of the Grand Final with a loss in the Semi Final against Toukley, when considered as a whole, this has been a great season for the boys. For the majority of the season they have been one of the benchmark teams, having been at the top of the ladder for the majority of the Rounds.

Unfortunately, the good season form seemed to desert them in the last couple of games, culminating in their knock out elimination in the Semi Final.

Despite the disappointment of the last couple of games, all of the boys deserve to feel proud of their achievement this year. It has been particularly rewarding to see how the boys have continued to grow into a supportive team. It has also been great to see how the couple of new boys who joined the team this season have been warmly welcomed. Phil and Nev want to congratulate all of the boys for their efforts during the season and to recognise each of them individually.

Jacob Balenzuela – has continued to develop this season and is becoming renowned for his big hitting. This was on display for all to see in the semi final. Together with the tail end he was part of a last ditch effort to save the game. The big hitting was exciting to watch and really had the Toukley players jumping as they tried to anticipate where the next ball was going to go flying to.

Kurtis Blanch – by far our most vocal player in the field. He can always be relied upon to keep the rest of the boys in a positive spirit, irrespective of the position the game is in. For Kurtis, it is clearly a case where the game is not over, until it is over. He is in there trying his best and encouraging the boys, right until the end. He has also emerged as one of our most consistent batsmen this season and has built a very good foundation for his batting in future seasons.

Josh Bridge – unfortunately was only with us for the first half of the season, having to relocate overseas with his family. He was however, our stand‐out player up until that point. Consistently the top scorer with the bat and retiring Not‐Out on several occasions. His patience while batting became one of his trade‐marks, along with his deft flicks of the ball off the stumps. His all round abilities were equally on display with plenty of effective bowling and great catching hands in the field. Well done Josh. We are going to miss you in future seasons.

Carlo Cervo – was our front‐line bowler during the season. He has developed into a very quick and fearsome bowler. On his day, he has the ability to create havoc with batsmen. As he gets more experience behind him, we have no doubt that he will become a very very good fast bowler. That is not say he isn’t also capable with the bat. His score of 50 in Round 2, which included 5 x 4’s is testament to this.

Adam Corby – at the end of last season we tagged him as Mr Reliable. He again lived up to that reputation this season. He is always a contributor with both the bat and ball. Given his ability, he was very unlucky to have not taken more wickets and scored more runs this season. He is another player who continues to improve and will be a force to be reckoned with in future seasons. Well done Adam.

Daniel Cross – was one of our main wicket‐keepers this season and did a great job with the gloves for us. As a wicket‐keeper he has also proven himself to be a very handy quick bowler who is able to send balls down the strip with a wicked amount of swing. Towards the end of the season he also moved towards the top of the batting order in recognition of his steady batting. A good all‐ round performance from Daniel this season.

Chris Gornall – joined the team for the first time at the beginning of the season and has been a valuable contributor with both bat and ball. His solid 23 with the bat in the Round 3 game is

41

Terrigal – Matcham 20082009 Year Book reflective of what he is capable of on his day. Likewise his 3 wickets in the same game showcased his all‐round abilities. We are looking forward to Chris being a permanent member of the team in future seasons, as he builds on the very solid foundation he has established this year.

Harry Kemball – joined the team for the second half of the season when he moved to Aus from the U.K (we don’t hold it against him) with his parents. Harry has been a great acquisition for our team and has really added another dimension with his bowling. He has consistently taken wickets for us. Since joining the team in Round 9, there has not been a game in which he has not taken at least one wicket. His 4 wickets, for 9 runs, off 4 overs in the Round 10 game was very inspirational. We look forward to great things from Harry next season.

Nicholas Kirwan – has become a batsman who only knows one way – take it up to the bowlers and intimidate them with some very big hitting. In the semi‐final this was on display for all to see when he swung the willow for a very exciting 10 runs off 4 balls, including 2 x 4’s. As we move into future seasons, if he is able to temper his enthusiasm with a little more patience, he will be a very formidable middle order batsmen who will score lots of runs. Many of these will come from boundaries as when he hits the ball; it goes and goes and goes.

Josh Neilson – was the second of our wicket‐keepers this season and did a great job for us. It has also been pleasing to see how he has improved with the bat as the season has evolved. In the last couple of Rounds of the Season, his steady batting was instrumental in getting us successfully across the line. He is another all‐rounder who as well as wicket‐keeping, is a very handy quick bowler.

Monty Richmond – the most pleasing feature of Monty’s season has been the manner in which his batting has improved. He had several memorable innings with the bat throughout the season and played a very valuable contribution to our success. His bowling has also continued to improve with his very fluid style being a feature. In this regard, he was unlucky to have not taken more wickets than he did.

Zachary Rowe – by his own admission he did not have a lucky season with either bat or ball. Despite this, it did not get him down for too long. Inevitably, the broad grin for which he has become known by a few of the parents as “Smiley” would re‐emerge. Despite his lack of luck, there were nevertheless moments when his form from previous seasons did start to emerge, such as his 12 runs in the Round 10 game.

Max Tuckerman – the player with the most reliable set of hands in the team. Max has again taken some great catches for us in the field. He has also shown some moments of brilliance with bat and ball. His 3 wickets, off 3 overs for 3 runs in the Round 6 game being illustrative of his capabilities with the ball. Likewise his 27 runs before unluckily being given out LBW, in the Round 9 game is testament to what he can do with the bat.

Finally, Phil and Nev would like to sincerely thank all of the parents for their support this season. The success of the boys has been reflected in the commitment of the parents to get the boys to all games and training sessions. Additionally, a number of the parents have been valuable helpers with scoring, umpiring and training duties and this is very much appreciated. Now the boys have a couple of solid seasons behind them, we are confident that they are ready to go that one step further very soon and grab the coveted Grand–Final baggy cap. We look forward to seeing the boys again next season.

14C MAROON This was a season of two distinct halves. The team began slowly due to inexperience: some members had played little cricket before this, and it was the first time the boys had come together in this team. This was further emphasised by some tough competition. We played each of the other 11 teams in the competition once, and yet we played against the top four teams before Christmas. Somewhat punishing. Despite this challenge, the team followed with an excellent second half where we won four of our last five games, including an excellent victory in the final game. More application with batting allowed us to post some excellent scores in this second half, although occasional sleepiness in the field let us down slightly. A positive team spirit and a competitive, fun approach by the boys made for an excellent season. It was heartening to see significant improvements in abilities and approach to the game by the whole team. We were justifiably proud to finish equal sixth on points (seventh on percentages). Congratulations and well done.

Many thanks to assistant coach Tim Saul who brought a level‐headed and calm approach to the game and also to scorers, Tom and Anne Baker, Chris Seeneevassen and Tim Saul.

Jake Hill bowled well all year with good line and length and some inswing. He was the top wicket taker with 9 wickets including an excellent spell of 4/15 in one game. Could easily have taken many more wickets. Excellent effort all year.

Perry Scheumack was our number 1 wicket keeper and performed extremely well in that role. Perry also developed into an excellent fielder over the season when he was not keeping and his bowling also improved significantly. Well done Perry

Max Baker was one of our relatively inexperienced cricketers who made huge improvements during the year. Max is turning into a good medium pace bowler who was hard to play against. His batting also improved and this combined with a good eye resulted in a seasons best 12 in one of our later games. Fantastic Max!

Charles Tedd always turned up with a cheery disposition and helped maintain the fun factor in the team. Charles bowled some excellent leg spin during the season, particularly during the final game when the opposition were threatening to take the game away from us. He was also a swashbuckling middle order batsman, who could score runs at will when his eye was in. A great team member.

Alec Saul tried very hard all year. Had great courage in his readiness to open despite his inexperience with the bat. Alec always fielded well, took some great catches and his bowling developed well over the season and his accuracy improved significantly. Great effort Alec.

Joel McGuinness is a good all‐round cricketer, who developed into a strong, hard hitting batsman with great potential highlighted by an excellent 60 in the final game, which helped us post 246 off 45 overs. Joel also showed some skill with bowling, and developed a very accurate arm in the field with some good run outs.

Jesse Hill had a very good season. He developed with his bowling well to become a very accurate medium pace bowler, with excellent economy. He was unlucky in taking wickets but made a huge contribution in our final game with two very important wickets to put the opposition on the back foot. Jesse had some good innings as well posting an average of 16.2 and he always fielded well. Keep it up Jesse, those wickets will come!

Terrigal – Matcham 20082009 Year Book Ben Buckland captained the team well and developed excellent application to his batting helping him to become the team’s top run scorer (including a 70* and a 50). This was helped by good running between the wickets. Ben took up leg spin halfway through the season, with some success and he also fielded well and took some fine catches. On ya Benny!

Patrick Moran put in a great effort this season. Pat is a surprisingly sharp medium pacer, who ambles in and sends down the occasional unplayable delivery. He struggled with accuracy, but gradually improved with a superb 3/11 to help us win the final game. Excellent stuff Pat. He is also a strong hitter who will score plenty of runs with improved defence.

Brandon Brodell our little South African 10 year old mate was an excellent addition to the team halfway through the season. He scored runs every time he batted including an excellent 49 in the final game. Brandon also bowled very accurate left arm spin, bamboozled many batsmen and was unlucky not to take many more wickets. Brandon is a top cricketer with a big future in the game.

Morgan Seeneevassen played some very good cricket and was an excellent team member. He was always very encouraging and welcoming to other team members and put in a great effort all year. Morgan is a natural athletic cricketer with a beautiful run‐up to his fast bowling; he was bowling very well towards the end of the season. He also showed some flair with the bat, with a very solid 74 early in the season. Good fielding, excellent cricket.

Well done boys. Thanks for a successful and enjoyable season.

Terrigal – Matcham 20082009 Year Book 16A

At the end of the season of a combined 15/16 comp, we can only look back on what a year it could have been. In quite a strong competition we were one win off making the semi finals. There were games we could have maybe should have won and games we won against all odds.

These boys represented our club in the best possible way - outstanding sportsmanship and total team commitment. They supported each other both on and off the field and also at training. They trained hard and everyone was keen to improve all aspects of their game.

A big thank you to the parents for making sure the boys were at training each week. Each game the boys were well looked after by Jenny C. who provided plenty of cold drinks and fruit, which was very much appreciated by all. Matt also did a brilliant job when the bbq came out to feed all of us with bacon and egg rolls, how good was that !!!

Often at the end of a match the opposing coach would comment that they had had the most enjoyable game, played in the right spirit. One coach said he couldn't believe how relaxed our boys were and the way they approached their cricket was a tremendous positive for the future of the game. In other words cricket is a game to enjoy. You give it your best on the field and we are all best mates, both teams, on and off the field.

Thank you to Liz and Jennie A for doing the bulk of the scoring and to Paul and Dennis for helping out with umpiring.

We see several of the boys go on to play grade next season and I wish them all the best and hope they go onto bigger and better things. They are Adrian, Brandon, Aeden, Harry, Keegan, Alex and Madon. Jack, Billy, Jackson, Ryan and Ben all pad up for U16's again next year.

Well done to all of you and congratulations on a fantastic season. You can't Matcham!

Yours in Cricket

Geoff Patterson

A major asset to our team was the special skills of our coach “the Cougar”. He had an uncanny ability to track down balls in the undergrowth at Paul Oval when everyone else had given up hope of ever seeing the game ball again. On at least one occasion not only did he manage to locate a ball that had been hit for an almighty 6, he also found a golf ball which he quickly pocketed and continued on with the game.

Terrigal – Matcham 20082009 Year Book 16 GOLD

This season was a disappointing one for the boys in terms of results, going winless for the entire season. However, it was far from disappointing to see them turning out every week and exhibiting such enthusiasm for the game. Especially since most of the boys are only U/15 and came up against some big U/16 kids in this competition. Their attitude towards training was always very good and the way the boys carried themselves on the field was a credit to this club. This was my first year coaching by myself and it was great to see the boys enjoying themselves regardless of the result and always doing their upmost to uphold the spirit of the game.

I would like to thank Mark Hyde for managing the side, for always being at training to lend a hand and for scoring and umpiring throughout the year. Also, big thanks to Nick Hodgkinson, Tom & Annie Baker, Scott Hopkins, Phillip Stickley and all the other parents that helped out through the year and drove the boys around early on a Saturday morning.

The players in the team were:

Will Hyde (Captain): Will started the year with some really gutsy batting displays in the middle order, holding the innings together on a number of occasions. He also continued to contribute at the end of the season, striking the ball better than he had all year. Will also developed into a handy off‐spin bowler who was unlucky to not come away with more wickets. I made Will captain after only seeing the boys in one training session and he did an admirable job. He has the potential to grow up into a player with a great cricket brain.

Jack Baker: Jack started the season as our leading batsman and bowler, scoring runs and taking wickets at every trip to the crease. Jack is a very technically sound batsman who always presents the full face of the bat. Although he started well, he will be disappointed with his performances with the bat towards the end of the season not really building on the runs he scored before Christmas. In terms of his bowling, Jack was our most consistent bowler. He always hit a good line and length and asked questions of the batsmen with his prodigious out‐swing. Jack finished up with the most wickets and generally had a very solid season.

Michael Beckers: Beckers started the season as a footy player who happens to play cricket, but finished the season as a solid wicket‐keeper and a swashbuckling opening batsman. Beckers turned in a number of admirable performances behind the stumps and snared a few catches and stumpings in the process. With the bat, Beckers was the reluctant opener but did a very good job for us at the top of the order, notching up a few good scores (mostly from boundaries off hook shots!).

Ryan Griffiths: Ryan was one of the characters of the team, always cracking a joke and keeping a smile on everyone’s faces (myself and opposition included). In playing terms, Ryan did a great job opening the innings for us this season. He occupied the crease well and took the shine off the ball for our middle order. Ryan has also developed into a very handy off‐spinner, giving the ball plenty of flight and spin and picking up some very useful wickets.

James Hodgkinson: James had a good season with the ball and has the potential to be a very good fast bowler for this club. He was probably the fastest bowler in the competition and frightened‐ out a number of batsmen. James was always a keen participant at training and always steamed in whether it was the start or the end of training. With the bat it was a different story. Not a natural, James looked uncomfortable at the crease most of the time but surprised even himself with a big hitting 22* it one of the games. James moves into senior cricket next year and I hope he continues to develop his talent.

Tom Hodgkinson: Tom was an admirable performer all year that always worked very hard at training. Tom didn’t get many opportunities to show his wares throughout the season but let no one down when he got the chance. Tom is a growing boy and has the potential to develop into a 52

Terrigal – Matcham 20082009 Year Book good fast bowler and showed us throughout the year that he wasn’t afraid to use his bouncer (whether it was deliberate or not). His batting needs some work but showed that he could hang in there when required to.

Matt Hopkins: Matt showed a lot of potential this year as a powerful hitter and medium pace bowler. Unfortunately for Matt the potential didn’t always materialise into results. However he did manage a few runs from his meaty blows and picked up some very handy wickets for us as well. It was disappointing that he missed the last couple of games because I was sure he could have added to his runs and wickets tallies, a big game for Matt was not far away.

Arun Jintoorkar: Arun is a big hitting left‐hander who provided us with some entertaining innings throughout the season. He will be disappointed that he didn’t convert some of his starts into something bigger but was still the standout batter for the year. With the ball Arun progressed very well, developing into a fast bowler with a lot of potential. If he continues to work at it Arun could become a very good bowler for this club in the future.

Jeremy Nigro: Jeremy progressed very well this year with both bat and ball. Batting down the order he often chipped in with some very handy runs, placing a high value on his wicket. In terms of his bowling Jeremy is a good seam up medium pacer who always bowls good line and length, he was very unlucky not to take more wickets. In the field he proved to be a solid performer showing safe hands to grab a few catches throughout the season.

Gerard O’Sullivan: Gerard is a very mature cricketer for his age. With the bat he values his wicket highly and produced numerous stoic performances for us in the middle order to resist some quality bowling attacks. He is also a very consistent performer with the ball, always bowling great line and length and always picking up a wicket or two when called to the bowling crease. Gerard is also a very competent fielder and it was an absolute pleasure to coach this young man.

Will Stickley: This was Will’s first year of cricket and improved significantly over the course of the season. Will has developed quite a talent as a leg‐spinner and always gave the opposition batsmen something to think about with his flight and spin. Will worked very hard at training and was unlucky not to have more wickets as he bowled some great spells at times. Will was also a crowd favourite with the bat, his only boundary for the year bringing raucous applause from the other boys.

Jacob Tullipan: Jacob had a very solid season with both bat and ball. He picked up some handy runs at times in our middle order and he even hit a six in the last game of the season. Jacob also worked really hard at training and this showed in his results towards the end of the season where started to get amongst the wickets as well. Jacob is also a very good fielder with safe hands and a very good throwing arm from the deep.

Thank you for the season boys and for making me laugh constantly; even at 7:30am on a Saturday! I hope to see each and every one you back next season for another crack.

Cheers

Scott O’Brien, Coach

16 MAROON

As the season draws to a close we have again returned to the final series after missing out the last 2 seasons.

We have had 7 members of the team (Dyon, Sam, James K, Mitchell, Rory, Robert and Thomas) that have been together since the under 11s, 2 (Kurt and Graham) made a reappearance in the side, 3 (Rhys, Joel and Sean) from our other Terrigal side and 1 (James G) new member. During our time in the juniors we have won 1 premiership (hopefully 2) and been beaten in 2 grand finals. Not bad for a bunch of mates who wanted to play cricket together!

The season 2008 /09 resulted in 1 outright win, 5 first innings win and 3 first innings losses. Overall we were all out only once and failed on only 2 occasions in 9 matches to dismiss the opposition. On 4 occasions we were bowling for outright victories. We scored 1,326 runs for the loss of 48 wickets, and took 112 wickets for 1,451 runs. With these results there were some outstanding individual batting performances, however, it must be noted that in each match everyone contributed with their bowling.

Best individual batting performances for the season were Rhys 102no and 60, James K 89no, 85no & 65, James G, 61 and Sam, 55. Congratulations to James K who finished first in the U16B district batting for the season. Batting 8 times, with 4 not outs, scoring 394 runs, at an average of 98.50t. Rhys finished third in the district, scoring 261 runs, at an average of 29.86 and James G had a great rookie season scoring 209 runs at an average of 29.86 and finished 7th in the district.

As I mentioned above everyone contributed with the ball. In fact everyone in the side took at least 3 wickets. 9 players (James K, Joel, Rory, Graham, Robert, Thomas, James G, Sam and Rhys), took 7 or more wickets for the season. Best performances were James K who took 18 wickets at an average of 6.67(6th in the district), Joel 13 wickets at 13.23 (16th) and Rory 11 wickets at 7.73 (19th).

In the field Rhys finished with 9 catches (6th in the comp), James G, 8 (7th), Dyon 6 catches and 1 stumping, James K 8 catches and 2 stumpings.

Many thanks to Jim, Colin and Tony for their help during the season with the scoring and umpiring and to all the parents who each Saturday supported the team and got them to practice each week.

It has been an absolute pleasure being associated with this group of players and parents over the last 5 years. To each player you are to be congratulated for the way you have all played the game and the respect each of you had for each member of the team.

Thanks to the club, the players and the parents for giving me the opportunity to continue with the side over the last 5 years I don’t know what I’ll do with my Saturdays next summer.

Good cricketing for the future
