Local youth football and cheerleading organization prepares to get back to the playing fi elds

Like most youth sports attempting to get back in action after being shut down by the state government due to the coronavirus epidemic, one local youth football and cheerleading organiza- tion is making plans for the upcoming season and to give back to the community. The Zephyrhills Athletic League is signing up players for a fall campaign that begins with offi cial league games in August. The Bulldawgs, who play their home games at Charles B. Krusen Memorial Field, have expanded in recent years to include sever- al other sports. A basketball league just capped its season before the gov- ernment shutdown with championship games at the East Pasco YMCA in February, but the entire track and fi eld season was can- celled. Now, however, it’s back to football and cheerleading, the league’s strong suit. Two seasons ago, the Bulldawgs captured district titles in all four divisions. “I’m very happy and excited that we’re going to have a foot- ball season, because we didn’t get a track season,” said Courtney Brown, the registrar and secretary who alongside parent coor- dinator Princess Wainwright manned a table for signups in the league’s meeting room at the fi eld. “The 2020 season is coming up for the Bulldawgs,” said league director Damien Pickett, who also coaches the junior var- sity team. “We’re very excited.
