The sentence, however, is expected to be turned into community service. Brazilian Brandao, already suspended by the football authorities for six months, was also handed a fine of 20,000 euros ($24,966). “It is extremely harsh. We used to say that footballers are not above the law but they should not be below the law either,” his lawyer Olivier Martin told BFMTV. Last week the French football federation rejected Brandao’s appeal against his six-month ban. Security camera footage broadcast on television after the game in August showed Brandao standing in a corridor outside the changing rooms at the Parc des Princes in Paris after the Corsicans’ 2-0 defeat at the hands of the Ligue 1 champions. Facing the camera as Thiago Motta comes into view, Brandao takes two steps forward before making contact with the Italian international’s face. The Brazilian, who was substi- tuted in the game after picking up a yellow card, then turns and runs away with Thiago Motta in pursuit. It is the second time in two seasons the former Olympique de Marseille player has been suspended. He also received a three-match ban last season for elbowing another PSG mid- fielder, Yohan Cabaye. — Reuters MALMO: Markus Rosenberg of Malmo, left, is chased by Juventus’ Andrea Pirlo, center, during their Champions League group A soccer match in Malmo, Sweden, Wednesday. — AP Juventus hosts Torino in Serie A derby match MILAN: Juventus is just one game away two matches. PREVIEW ISSUE FOUR – 24TH APRIL 2012 MADRID CLOSE IN REAL TAKE THE SPOILS IN THE EL CLASICO AND CLOSE IN ON THE SILVERWARE After a poor week for both sides in Europe, Real and Barca were desperate to grab a win against their biggest rivals on a dramatic, rain-lashed Saturday night at the Nou Camp. It was Real that grabbed the vital win and probably clinched the La Liga title. Los Merengues went ahead through German midfielders Sami Khedira and were comfortable for long periods, but Barca’s Chilean substitute Alexis Sánchez equalised with just 20 minutes remaining. Cristiano Ronaldo’s clinical strike just three minutes later settled the game with Madrid now seven points clear, with only four games remaining. Madrid coach José Mourinho named an very attacking team and his side began the better. Ronaldo’s early header from a corner brought a superb flying save from goalkeeper Víctor Valdés. His opposite number Iker Casillas was then quickly off his line when full-back Dani Alves dispossessed Sergio Ramos. The game was being played at a fearsome pace and French striker Karim Benzema brought the best out of Valdés again. Barca thought they had gone front when Alves had the ball in the net after a Cristian Tello run, but the youngster had been flagged offside. Cristiano Ronaldo Wants Out At Real Madrid! Top Five Potential Landing Places Author : Robert D. Cobb With multiple media reports from across the pond stating the four-time Ballon D’Or winner and European champion, Cristiano Ronaldo wanting out at Real Madrid due to tax evasion issues, the top player in soccer is about to hit the transfer market. Ronaldo, who was frequently voted as Forbes’ highest paid athlete in the world in terms of total earnings at $93 million for the year of 2017, will likely command a record fee in both transfer and weekly wages that will be a minimum of his then-record €94 million transfer from United to Los Blancos. Could he return to Old Trafford for an encore? Will he set his eyes on a new challenge in MLS or will he take his talents to Germany? Below are the top five potential landing places for the 32-year-old Portuguese superstar striker. Major League Soccer (MLS): First David Beckham, then Davis Villa, Kaka, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Theirry Henry, Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard and now Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Ronaldo? MLS has come a long way from his fledgling beginning in becoming one of the world’s hottest up-and-coming football leagues. 1 / 2 With such world-class players already over in America and former United teammate in Beckham set to debut his Miami expansion club soon, a player like Ronaldo in South Beach would be instant box-office for both MLS and Ronaldo. Manchester United: How would a Ronald-back-to-United return of one of the all-time great United heroes back to Old Trafford play out in Manchester? Rather well actually.

  • Football Agents in the Biggest Five European Football Markets an Empirical Research Report
FOOTBALL AGENTS IN THE BIGGEST FIVE EUROPEAN FOOTBALL MARKETS AN EMPIRICAL RESEARCH REPORT FEBRUARY 2012 Raffaele Poli, CIES Football Observatory, University of Neuchâtel Giambattista Rossi, João Havelange Scholarship, Birkbeck University (London) With the collaboration of Roger Besson, CIES Football Observatory, University of Neuchâtel Football agent portrayed by the Ivorian woodcarver Bienwélé Coulibaly Executive summary While intermediaries acting in the transfers of footballers have existed since almost the birth of the professional game, the profession of agent was not officially recognised until 1991 when FIFA established the first official licensing system. In November 2011, there were 6,082 licensed agents worldwide: 41% of them were domiciled within countries hosting the big five European leagues: England, Spain, Germany, Italy and France. This research project firstly investigates shares in the representation market of players in the five major European championships. By presenting the results of a survey questionnaire, it analyses the socio-demographic profile of licensed football agents in the above mentioned countries, the business structure of their activity, the different kinds of services provided, and the way in which they are performed from a relational point of view (network approach). The analysis of shares highlights that the big five league players’ representation market is highly concentrated: half of the footballers are managed by 83 football agents or agencies. Our study reveals the existence of closed relational networks that clearly favors the concentration of players under the control of few agents. Footballers are not equally distributed between intermediaries. Conversely, dominant actors exist alongside dominated agents. One fifth of the agents having answered to our questionnaire manage the career of half of the players represented on the whole.
