  • Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis Named State Farm/WBCA High School Player of the Year
Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis Named State Farm/WBCA High School Player of the Year ATLANTA – Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.) High School senior Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis, considered by most experts to be one of the best shooters in the country, is the 2011 State Farm®/WBCA High School Player of the Year, the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association announced today. “Congratulations to Kaleena for reaching the pinnacle of the high school game,” said WBCA CEO Beth Bass. “State Farm is synonymous with excellence and so is this student-athlete’s performance.” Mosqueda-Lewis currently is the top-ranked player in the United States according to ESPN HoopGurlz.com, which named her its national high school player of the year in 2010. She averages 22 points per game and has scored in double figures in all but one of the Monarchs’ 28 games this season. The 6-foot senior guard has scored 20 or more points in 20 games, including three games of 30 or more points. Mosqueda-Lewis has signed with the University of Connecticut – the sixth WBCA High School Player of the Year to do so behind Elena Delle Donne (2008), Maya Moore (2007), Tina Charles (2006), Ann Strother (2002) and Tamika (Williams) Raymond (1998). Mater Dei (27-1), the defending California Interscholastic Federation Division II state champion, is currently ranked No. 3 nationally by both USA Today and ESPN. “Kaleena’s remarkable achievements, both on and off the court, make her truly deserving of this prestigious award,” said Pam El, Marketing Vice President for State Farm. “State Farm is extremely proud and honored to recognize this outstanding student-athlete and we wish her the best in all her future endeavors.” Mosqueda-Lewis will be formally honored on Saturday, April 2, during the 2011 WBCA National Convention in Indianapolis at a press conference announcing the State Farm Coaches’ All-America Team and State Farm Wade Trophy winner.

Stars Over Jacobson Barn The iconic red clapboarded barn on Horsebarn Hill, a favorite spot for graduation photos, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as Farwell Barn, named for its original owners. Even the official register, though, nods to the familiar “other name” Jacobson Barn, for the subsequent owners who sold it to UConn. The listing describes it as “one of a dwindling number of historic resources that recall Mansfield’s long history as a primarily agricultural community.” UConn videographer Angelina Reyes, who captured this shot, says, “I waited for a clear night. No clouds. Just stars. I took one photograph with a 30-second exposure every two seconds over a two-hour period. I then went into Photoshop and stacked each image on top of the other to create star trails.” Watch a time-lapse video of the stars and see historical photos of the barn at s.uconn.edu/barn. (Sept. 20, 2017) – McDonald’s has named Atlanta as the host city for the 2018 McDonald’s All American Games. The 2018 Games will be played on March 28, 2018 at Philips Arena, home of the Atlanta Hawks. The city previously hosted the 1983 and 1992 Boys Games. For years, Georgia has been a powerhouse for high school basketball talent. Since 1977, 41 McDonald’s All American Boys and 18 McDonald’s All American Girls players have hailed from the state. This includes 2017 Morgan Wootten Player of the Year winner, Wendell Carter, Jr. and other Games alumni including: Jaylen Brown (2015), Maya Moore (2007), Dwight Howard (2004), Shareef Abdur-Rahim (1995), and Pervis Ellison (1985). “On behalf of the Atlanta Hawks, Philips Arena and the great city of Atlanta, we’re proud to host the 2018 McDonald’s All American Games and are excited they are returning to a region of the country with such a storied legacy of basketball,” said Dominique Wilkins, Vice President of Basketball for the Atlanta Hawks and a 1979 McDonald’s All American. “Having spent much of my life playing and living here, I know the city and fans will enjoy hosting this event and seeing the next great crop of basketball talent.” The move follows a successful run of the All American Games in Chicago.
