Buzzard Vorwort Das Christentum wird oft als eine der drei großen monotheistischen Weltreligionen neben Judentum und Islam beworben. Das ist keine korrekte Einschätzung. Weder das Judentum noch der Islam räumen dem Christentum das Recht auf die Bezeichnung als monotheistische Religion ein. Die mehr als zwei Milliarden Christen glauben an die Lehre von der Dreieinigkeit, die behauptet dass Gott drei ist. Und dies ist ein Glaubensbekenntnis, das weder das Judentum noch der Islam als monotheistisch in Betracht ziehen. Wie der Autor dieses Buches argumentiert, ist die Dreieinigkeitslehre ein Glaube, der weder in der hebräischen Bibel noch dem Neuen Testament zuverlässig begründet ist. Er wurde erst im 4. Jahrhundert nach den Konzilen in Nicäa (325 n. Chr.) und Konstantinopel (381 n. Chr.) in Kleinasien (der heutigen Türkei) offizielle Lehre. Dies ist ein rares Buch. Es gibt nicht viele wie dieses, tatsächlich fast keines, am religiösen Marktplatz. Warum? Weil es die Lehre von der Dreieinigkeit von der Perspektive eines Nichttrinitariers betrachtet – einer Sichtweise, die von den vier Hauptrichtungen der Christenheit (Römisch-Katholische, Protestanten, Griechisch-Orthodoxe und Altorientalische Kirche) verdammt wird. Dies ist ein freimütiges Buch. Zu anderen Zeiten wäre der Autor für dieses Werk verflucht und am Scheiterhaufen verbrannt oder gehenkt worden. Michael Servetus hat für sein De Erroribus Trinitatis in der Reformation unter John Calvin mit seinem Leben bezahlt. Und auch in der heutigen freien Atmosphäre, die eine solche Publikation erlaubt, führt eine Erklärung über den Unglauben an die Trinität zu augenblicklicher Ächtung und sofortiger Klassifizierung als Ketzerei und Ketzer. Der Autor hat bewiesen, dass er gewillt ist diesen Preis zu bezahlen. Dies ist ein gelehrtes Buch. Von einem führendem Geist (so nannte John Milton die Autoren) geschrieben, ist es eine unschätzbare Informationsquelle für jene, die der Falle des Trinitarismus mit seinen ihn begleitenden Lehren wie der Präexistenz Christi, der „ewigen Sohnschaft“, der Menschwerdung und der Hypothese einer Wiedervereinigung entflohen sind. Seine umfassende Sammlung von biblischen und gelehrten Zitaten stützt und bestätigt die unitarische Sichtweise. Dies ist ein Aufruf zur Rückkehr zu den Lehren Jesu. Dieses Buch ist die Fortsetzung eines früheren Werkes, Die Lehre der Dreieinigkeit Gottes– die selbst zugefügte Wunde der Christenheit, mit Co-Autor Charles Hunting aus dem Jahre 1998. In Jesus war kein Trinitarier kehrt der Autor mit neuer Vitalität und vertieftem Einblick, als Frucht intensiven Studiums und zahlreicher Debatten mit Gegnern im ganzen Land, zu diesem Thema zurück. Seit 1998 verfasst der Autor auch den monatlichen Rundbrief Focus on the kingdom und beschäftigt sich dadurch fortwährend erneut mit diesem Thema. Beide Bücher sind in einem friedensstiftenden Ton geschrieben und der Autor unterlässt verbales Donnergewitter wie bei den Reformatoren. Ein Maßstab für den Erfolg eines Buches ist seine Verbreitung. Ich wünsche diesem so notwendigen Buch weite Akzeptanz. Es gibt allein über zwei Milliarden Christen, die evangelisiert und das Shema Israels (Markus 12,29), das Jesus selbst befürwortete und Johannes 17,3 („Das ist das ewige Leben, das sie dich, der du allein wahrer Gott bist, und den du gesandt hast, Jesus Christus, erkennen“), wie Jesus betete, gelehrt werden müssen. Buzzard Einleitung "Wir müssen uns daran erinnern, dass christliche Theologie nicht an Gott als eine Person glaubt. Sie glaubt, dass in ihm eine Dreieinigkeit von Personen als Einheit Gottheit besteht." 1 "Ausleger der christlichen Glaubensüberzeugung waren normalerweise nicht besonders interessiert daran, was Jesus während seines eigenen Lebens beabsichtigte und tat." 2 "Für Jesus und für sein Volk war Gott während vieler Jahrhunderte nur Einer. Er änderte nichts an diesem uralten Glauben." 3 In diesem Buch geht es darum klar zustellen, wer der Gott der Bibel ist. Solch ein Projekt mag als ein recht hochtrabendes Vorhaben erscheinen. Aber mein Ziel ist sehr genau definiert. Ich habe vor zu untersuchen, was es bedeutet, wenn "der Eine Gott" das Objekt unserer christlichen Anbetung ist. Was meint die Bibel mit "einem Gott"? Was bedeutet biblischer Monotheismus? Verschiedene, einander widersprechende Gruppen von christlichen Gläubigen behaupten Monotheisten zu sein. Muslime erheben den Anspruch Monotheisten zu sein. Juden machen ebenfalls diese fundamentale Behauptung. Das große und dringende Thema ist: Wie definiert Jesus und die Bibel die Vorstellung von "einem Gott"? Meine Untersuchung beinhaltet den Vergleich zwischen dem Glaubensbekenntnis des historischen Jesus und den Verfassern des Neuen Testaments und deren Glaubensbekenntnis 4, wie es fast universell von allen Kirchenbesuchern verstanden wird, die sich mit dem Anspruch versammeln, Nachfolger Jesu zu sein. In diesen Kapiteln beziehe ich mich oft auf das Shema (5. Mose 6, 4; Markus 12, 29) als zentrales Glaubensbekenntnis Jesu. Ich befinde mich in ständigem Austausch mit vielen bekannten Theologen, die den strikten Monotheismus Jesu kommentiert haben. Ich kann davon ausgehen, dass ein erheblicher Teil der christlichen Literatur meine These bestätigt, dass Jesus auf diesem unitarischen Bekenntnis beharrte. In diesem Sinn wird die gegenwärtige Praxis und der Glaube der Kirchen durch ihre eigene Literatur widerlegt und würde gleichfalls von Jesus kritisiert werden. Ich behaupte, dass die Ersetzung des Bekenntnisses Jesu durch eine trinitarische Definition von Gott kein zulässiger "Übergang innerhalb des biblischen Monotheismus" 5 ist. Ich lasse mich davon nicht überzeugen, und auch nicht Millionen anderer 6, dass Trinitarismus in irgend einer Weise biblischer Monotheismus ist. In späteren Kapiteln habe ich versucht, die trügerischen Argumente aufzudecken, auf die sich oft "orthodoxe" Bibelausleger berufen, um die falsche Auffassung zu stützen, dass Jesus und die Apostel glaubten, Gott sei Drei in Einem. Ich denke, die Öffentlichkeit wurde schwer irregeführt, weil ihr die Kritikfähigkeit abging, solche Argumente zu durchschauen. Ich bin nicht der Meinung, dass das Neue Testament jemals berichtet, dass Jesus von sich behauptet, der eine wahre Gott, der Gott Israels zu sein. Warum sollten dann die Nachfolger Jesu einem Glauben anhängen, auf den Jesus keinen Hinweis gab, dass sie an ihm festhalten sollten? Wenn Christsein bedeutet, Jesus Christus nachzufolgen, dann muss es das erste Ziel eines Christen sein, dieselbe Sicht von Gott zu haben, die Jesus hatte. Das Glaubensbekenntnis Jesu sollte automatisch das Glaubensbekenntnis seiner Nachfolger sein. Wie die biblischen Berichte offenbaren, machte Jesus unmissverständlich deutlich, wen er für Gott hielt. Aber die Kirchen haben viel dafür getan, Jesu Wahrnehmung der Identität Gottes zumindest verwirrend, wenn nicht unbegreiflich zu machen.

By this conveyance I send three copies of the debates of the Massachusetts convention,2 one of which you will please to present to Dr Price, with my most respectful compliments, and another to my friend Mr Hazlitt.3 The new constitution of government has been almost the sole object which has occupied the minds of the people of these states during several months past. It has kindled the flame of party zeal among us; but it has fortunately in its favour a large majority of the rich, the wise, and the virtuous. You will find the constitution less democratick, than might be expected from a people who are so fond of liberty. Various causes have conspired to render republican sentiments unfashionable; among which may be mentioned Mr J. Adams's publications,4 a late insurrection in the state of Massachusetts,5 and the corrupt proceedings of the legislature of Rhode-island.6 Several states have not yet given their opinion; but the constitution will probably be adopted by eleven at least. It is supposed that New York and Rhode-island will be in the minority. A few of our old patriots fear that the government will terminate in aristocracy or monarchy. It is impossible to foresee what the event will be. I can only pray, that God will preserve us from the tyranny of kings, and the insolence of nobles. Amidst these apprehensions, it affords pleasure to reflect that though civil liberty may possibly lose, yet that religious liberty will certainly gain, by the new constitution.

W. Bebbington Professor of History, University of Stirling The catalogue that follows contains biographical data on the Unitarians who sat in the House of Commons during the nineteenth century. The main list, which includes ninety-seven MPs, is the body of evidence on which the paper on „Unitarian Members of Parliament in the Nineteenth Century‟ is based. The paper discusses the difficulty of identifying who should be treated as a Unitarian, the criterion chosen being that the individual appears to have been a practising adherent of the denomination at the time of his service in parliament. A supplementary list of supposed Unitarian MPs, which follows the main list, includes those who have sometimes been identified as Unitarians but who by this criterion were not and some who may have been affiliated to the denomination but who were probably not. The borderline is less sharp than might be wished, and, when further research has been done, a few in each list may need to be transferred to the other. Each entry contains information in roughly the same order. After the name appear the dates of birth and death and the period as an MP. Then a paragraph contains general biographical details drawn from the sources indicated at the end of the entry. A further paragraph discusses religious affiliation and activities.     RICHARD PRICE, A CONTROVERSIAL EIGHTEENTH-CENTURY UNITARIAN An address given to Oxford Unitarians by Dr Howard Oliver on 9 th October 2011 To start with some geography: if you visit the cemetery of Bunhill Fields on the City Road in London, as well as the notable graves of Willam Blake and Daniel Defoe, you will find those of the mathematician Revd Thomas Bayes and that of our subject today, the Revd Richard Price Richard Price was the son of a dissenting minister and was born in 1723 in Tynton in Wales. After education at a dissenting academy in London, he became a chaplain in Stoke Newington. In 1757, following a bequest, he was able to marry and in 1758 moved to Newington Green as the minister of the dissenters’ chapel there. His block of houses was destined to become a famous address and, built in 1658, is also London’s oldest surviving brick terrace. In 1770 he became morning preacher at Gravel Pit Chapel in Hackney as well as continuing to deliver afternoon sermons at Newington Green. He also carried out some duties at the meeting house in Old Jewry St in the city. Such was Price’s status that his house at 54 Newington Green was visited by many famous people, for example: American Founding Fathers, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Paine and John Adams. Politicians, Earl of Shelburne, Earl Stanhope, William Pitt. Philosophers Adam Smith and also David Hume; poet and banker Samuel Rogers. His immediate neighbours in the terrace included the father of Samuel Rogers, with whom he travelled widely, and the Revd James Burgh, who opened a dissenting academy on the Green and sent his pupils to hear Price’s sermons.

This was a successor to the one-day Theology Conference in Manchester of May 2016, which posed the question: What is Unitarian theology? In 2017, the organisers (Stephen Lingwood, Jo James and myself) were looking for a wider reach. And so it became a two-day event, with a theme for each day. ‘God’ came first, with three speakers taking different approaches: how one can relate to a Personal God; how our experiences of love shape our concepts of God; and thirdly, the quest for a ‘non-realist’ God. ‘Unitarianism’ was the focus on the second day: exploring theology from women’s experience (particularly relating to Unitarianism); the significance of encounters between early Unitarians and Islam; and finally asking whether Unitarians can be ‘evangelists’, and if so, how? The speakers all tackled their subjects in depth and with passion, and we are extremely grateful to them: Rev Ant Howe, Dr Jane Blackall, Rev Lewis Connolly, Rev Dr Ann Peart, Dr Justin Meggit and Stephen Lingwood.
