Bakool Nutrition Cluster Participants, (International & Local organizations), include: ARD, SOS, ACF, MARDO, MoH SEDO and HIDIG the Meeting was hosted and chaired by MARDO. It was held in MARDO Meeting hall.

After a round table introduction, all the Nutrition cluster participants shared their Key Nutrition Updates, Challenges and gaps, then review and endorsement for the last cluster meeting minutes and confirm it was correct and true.

Provision of Vitamin A supplementation and deworming ACF provides Vitamin A supplements to all children under the age of 5 years admitted in the programs in the target nutrition sites. At the same time the children receive anthelminthic to treat intestinal worms which is a primary cause of anemia in children. During the period under review ACF was able to provide Vitamin A supplements and dewormed to 1,492 and children in all nutrition sites in the region according the protocol. IYCF Sessions Apart from nutrition treatment services, ACF provides preventive nutrition interventions focusing on optimal infant and young child feeding practices in emergency (IYCF-E). Under the stewardship of ACF midwives counsellor, 671 counselling sessions were conducted across the region in the target villages. Individual and group counselling sessions were conducted both at community and facility level. Mother lead MUAC ACF is currently piloting mother lead MUAC in Elbarde district. The mothers, caretakers and community members like MTMSGs were trained on practical hands-on MUAC screening technique to assess the nutrition status of their child.

During the month of December 2018, MARDO Operates Three components of Nutrition activities they are one OTP fixed and Four OTP mobile outreach, one TSFP/BSFP fixed and fourteen TSFP/BSFP mobile outreach, and Resilience are remained operational, in Huddur District, the activities of Nutrition components are going on smoothly,

In the month of Dec 2018, Mandere Relief and Development Organization, (MARDO) in Huddur started MUAC screened of weekly basis in OTP sites (1,950) children 6-59 months normal (572) were MAM children 6-59 months (72) were SAM children 6-59 months (2,594) children 6-59 months were total

MARDO OTP activities, went on smoothly, although there are 81 new admissions in the five OTP centers in Huddur District the teams started nutrition services and treatment of severely acute malnutrition to the children under five years of age, and enhanced Basic nutrition service package provision, MARDO Nutrition team and Community Based workers (CBWs) improved community mobilization through expanded community outreach services, nutrition education on Infant and Young Child Feeding (IYCF), Nutrition Health and Hygiene Promotions, (NHHP) sessions, and treating Severely acutely malnourished children under 5 years of age,

providing nutrition counselling and supplementation to pregnant and lactating women, Systematic treatments, referral systems, RUTF distribution, Do-worming, Vitamin A Supplementation and Social-mobilization In collaboration with UNICEF, MARDO nutrition interventions took place in Huddur town, Banjaney, Osba’elo Waney, and Qurale villages, and the all Ongoing BNSP Activities like OTP IYCF and IMAM Community Training Sites in district.. the new admission of U5 were 81 by using Weight for Height and MUAC admission, 20 transferred from OTP/SC and Readmission, while 97 were Cured, 2 were None respond, 5 were defaulter and there is no death case have been reported during the month of December 2018, 16 were transferred to SC total discharge were 120, and the total in the program are 323 IYCF the mother to mother support groups, individual and group counselling in all OTP Sites

MARDO IYCF counsellors are in charge of conducting one-to-one counselling and group sessions at the nutrition sites as well as at community and household level. In the community, 28 group sessions took place on a weekly basis and led by either the IYCF counsellor or community mobilizers. 1,317 individual counselling sessions were conducted as well as 1,211 group counselling sessions. MARDO TSFP and BSFP During the month of Novemebr 2018 MARDO TSFP in Huddur site carry out smoothly, MARDO TSFP supporting WFP Somalia, which extend supports to 15 accessible villages such as, Madaxwarabe, Farag, Bisigle, Banijany, Abore, Tijeeg, Weerow, Tuboy, Fajerbore, Osba’elo, Waney, El-leheli, Qurale, Lukugurow, and Huddur town,) the TSFP activity is carried out smoothly

The month of December 2018 MARDO nutrition team not received Plumpy Supp from WFP Somalia, but screening and registration were done during the month of December 2018, the new admissions of TSFP U5 were 281, Readmissions were 38, Referred other TSFP was 0, Transferred from OTP/SC were 1, Total admissions were 320 cured were 133, None respond 3, transferred out 0, defaulter 0, no death cases have been reported during the month of December 2018, and no OTP follow up discharged, the total discharge were 145, All moderate acute malnourished children of U5 were not given plumpy sup,

the total expected beneficiaries from Nov 2018, 883 were of Pregnant and lactating women (PLW) 120 of PLW were admitted the month of December 2018, 41 of PLW were discharged, 873 of PLW in Beneficiaries have received their ration of Vegetable oil and CSB, each Beneficiary, received 7.5kg of CSB and 0.75kg of Vegetable oil, also provided or supported systematic treatments and hygiene promotion sessions to the Beneficiaries in the month of December 2018. MARDO, TSFP/BSFP Programme includes 10 outreach CNWs in fourteen Villages that conduct active case finding, follow up and deliver key health and nutrition messages on a daily basis across all 15 accessible villages in Huddur district.

MARDO supported an enhanced Blanket Supplementary Feeding Programme (BSFP) to increase access to food by vulnerable groups and to alleviate pressure on treatment programs by lowering children’s risk of becoming acutely malnourished. On the month of November we have started nutrition scope top up for the

BSFP/TSFP beneficiaries, the beneficiaries were given scope cards which was registered on the month of July 2018 and then when their scope cards were brought we have distributed their cards accordingly which we then used to give their ration using scope top up system, after the beneficiary came at FDP the beneficiaries are screened and after that the beneficiaries will go to the scope top up Centre then their cards are top upped then the beneficiary will come back to their FDP as he/she having his/her scope card in the hand and that is the time when the beneficiary will received his/her ration . On 13th of November 2018 MARDO Nutrition team received 300 cartons of Plumpy Supp from WFP Somalia, This cartons of Plumpy doz intended the children 6 to 24 month of age the total children were registered 3000 under 24 months, each beneficiary received 15 sachets of Plumpy Supp but screening and registration were done during the month of 2018, BSFP beneficiaries come from Huddur town and surrounding villages about 1,743 families were coming from rural areas in Huddur district, while other 1,543 remains were coming from in urban areas in Huddur town, other hand, These beneficiaries received nutrition education and Lessons covered were exclusive and complementary feeding IYCF and NHHP sessions have done during the month of November 2018.

MARDO/WVs-OFDA Programme Updates • MARDO is running OFDA programme in xudur with support from World Vision since October 2018 and the programme is integration of (WHAERIS). WASH, Health, Agriculture and Economic Recovery Intervention. • AS Health and Nutrition they work as one mobile clinic serving six sites after identification of sites and strongly targeting FFP beneficiaries of ARD. • During the month of December OFDA continued its routine nutrition screening and IYCF-E activities in the Xuddur district in combine with mobile clinic working in six sites where by the team do screening of U5 and PLW. • We provides Vitamin A supplements to the children U5 years that ware admitted in the Mobile sites and give referral. At the same time the children receive deworming for intestinal worms that is basic cause of anemia. • Community Health Workers do Health education and screening then sent malnourish children, Pregnant and lactating women to OTP, TSFP, BSFP and SC and give IYCF mobilization. • CHWs are the IYCF counsellors and they are in charge of conducting one- to-one counselling and group sessions at the Mobile sites as well as community household level. • Every CHWs engage continuous IYCF promotion and have target of 10 beneficiaries per week for every community health worker

Key Nutrition services and Situation highlights

SOS began integrated (nutrition, health, Protection and WASH) outreach services in Kontomo village. The organization will be implanting these services through mobile services as well as in static facilities. The latter isn’t yet functional as the structure is under rehabilitation and it will be completed in the coming days. During its first day of activities in Kontomo, 8 children under the age of 5 years and 6 PLWs were admitted in to OTP and TSFP after thorough screening. SOS SCREENING AND ADMISSIONS Site Screened MAM SAM (OTP) <5 94 6 2 Kontomo PLW 78 6 N/A Hygiene Promotion for Caregivers of malnourished children In addressing the drivers of ill-health, the project empowered the community members through health, hygiene and nutrition promotion, moving them from traditional roles as consumers of care to more effective roles as co-producer and partner in the health transformation process within their locality. 106 caregivers of malnourished children were reached with Hygiene promotion messages IYCF encompassing the mother to mother support groups, individual and group counselling Apart from nutrition treatment services, SOS provides preventive nutrition interventions focusing on optimal infant and young child feeding practices in emergency (IYCF-E). The SOS midwives are in charge of conducting one-to-one counselling and group sessions at the nutrition sites as well as at community and household level. SOS will be establishing 1 Mother to Mother Support Groups in each of its target facilities.

ARD NUTRITION CLUSTER UPDATES- NOVEMBER 2018

ARD Key Nutrition services and Situation highlights

1. Screening exercise was carried out in the nutrition center and the total screened were 1234 children and 425 PLWs. The children screened were 315 severely malnourished and eligible to OTP, 560 children were moderately malnourished and eligible to TSFP while the rest of 359 children were normal. In PLWs, the 425 screened 250 of the were moderately malnourished and eligible to TSFP. 2. OTP: we conduct OTP activities in 3 sites; I fixed and 2 mobiles. We admitted 55 SAM children in the program and 219 were discharged cured 1 were defaulted and no deaths reported so far. 3. SC: 8 SAM children with medical complications were admitted and systematic treatment were administered during their stay at the SC. 7 children were referred to OTP after they were stabilized for continuity of the therapeutic treatment. 4. The PCA expired in Dec 2018 and the center experienced supply shortage of RUTF in Jan 2019. Also the FLA expired in Dec 2018 and no supplementary food for TSFP and BSFP children. 5. EPI: The EPI coverage was 239 children and 56 PLWs/WCBA were immunized since 1st of Jan 2019. 6. In NHHP/IYCF, 50 group sessions were conducted at the facility and mobile sites and the number participants reached was 873 being provided key messaging related IYCF and NHHP. 7. De-worming activity was carried out for the children and number reached was 435, Micronutrient supplementation was done for PLWs and number reached was 879 and Vitamin A supplementation was done and number reached was 420. 8. Carried nutrition messaging sessions in groups of 50 sessions in Wajid and Huddur districts for EFSP beneficiaries as complementary for a balanced diet and prevention of malnutrition. The CNVs also carried out individual consultation at household level and they reached 1500 HHs so far. 9. Micronutrient powder for treatment hidden malnutrition and hunger was provided 2000 children of U2 by providing 15 sachets each for a month. 10. ARD plans to carry out nutrition intervention in Rabdhure area of Washaqo, Tuulo banana, Quracle and Dhuurey for treatment of malnourished children and PLWs.

HIDIG is implementing integrated multi-sectoral lifesaving services to drought affected IDPs and communities in Hudur and Wajid the project is funded by ( SHF) HIDIG has Eight OTP Mobile Teams and it’s currently fully operational in Ten IDP Camps five in Hudur and four is in .

SEDO Key Nutrition services and Situation highlights

The Somali Englight and Development Organization (SEDO) in Partnership with Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations (FAO) Somalia country office the implementation of Cash+ and Agricultural input activities Project in Bakool region of south central Somalia in the district of Xudur was signed on 19th of April 2018 between the two organizations. Training for nutrition champion-SEDO conducted Nutrition training targeting 10% of its total beneficiaries which we have trained 130 nutrition training champions for the 7 villages in Hudur district of Bakol region, alongside with this trainees SEDO have appointed 2 nutrition focal points for each of the villages from the trained list to be in charge of addressing nutritional issues in the villages which can serve as a focal points. And the training was conducted as per the plan. Reports was shared with FAO in Annex 9b. Training photos available in our reports On 1st of April 2018, SEDO kicked off the meetings with stakeholders in the district including Authorities, NGOs for sequencing and held the relevant mobilizations and sensitization at the ground and selecting project target villages with the help of national, regional, and local authorities, community elders and village relief committees strictly following the FAO village selection criteria. The implementation activities commenced with the mobilization and sensitization of the regional and district authorities of Xudur district of Bakool region briefing them about the project objectives and nature of the cash+ and Agricultural input activities before proceedings to the NGOs in the region for coordination’s and information sharing which immediately follow this activity .

SEDO conducted Lead farmers training in Hudur district following the FAO criteria of (10%) of the total beneficiaries which was 1,300 HHs for our case and come up with trainees beneficiary target of 130 lead farmers to be planned for training. Objective of the training was to strengthen the capacity of the lead farmers on good agricultural practices and to promote the taking up of GAP, Basic Production and Pest Management Practices, pests’ control which will ensure food security, safety and quality crops as well as the stable food production in Xudur district of Bakool regions Somalia. 2. CASH + INPUT- SEDO received CASH vouchers for three month payment of the 3 cycles of the form Cash Plus Agricultural input distribution, Unconditional cash assistance vouchers. Post Distribution assessment- SEDO has successfully conducted the crop harvest assessment and The crop situation has been good in Xudur district. The rains were good in Hudur district So far there had been no any bad conditions that might cause crop failure. Training for lead farmers -SEDO conducted Lead farmers training in Hudur district following the FAO criteria of (10%) of the total beneficiaries which was 1,300 HHs for our case and come up with trainees beneficiary target of 130 lead farmers to be planned for training. Distribution Seed voucher-SEDO prepared and submitted the distribution plan for the inputs seed vouchers (Cowpea, Sorghum and vegetable seeds) as per the LOA in Annex 7. FAO approved the plan and provided vouchers and prior to the distribution Agro- dealers together with SEDO staff did every effort to avoid fraud and voucher rigging where every voucher of each beneficiary underwent various verifications prior to the distribution of the agricultural input distribution.

Gaps and Gaps and challenges Bakool Nutrition challenges Security- even though there were no insecurity incidences reported, the Cluster Partners program access was greatly hampered by political instability in Yeed which forced the organization to suspend its operations in the district until further notice.

Security- even though there were no insecurity incidences reported, the program access was greatly hampered by the constant threat of AS in the district. This means vulnerable communities are not able to access services due to fear of reprisals from AS.
