WELCOME FROM IED MADRID DIRECTOR I have been thinking how to start this welcome letter, for the upcoming academic year and I have been trying by recollecting words of particular significance.

Before that, let me share with you, how IED Madrid reacted to these uncertain times: we have been challenged. IED Madrid has been pioneering within the whole group, thanks to several initiatives, projects and platforms. One of these was, in fact, the virtual experience through the online learning, which allowed us to adapt contents and methodology, preserving its integrity as well as its quality during the hard times of the lockdown. The academic focus was not the only aspect we are proud of, but also the daily follow up to our students, when it came to personal and learning hardships. We learnt how to address the contingencies, strengthening the attention to details, without losing the big picture, the necessity of evolving and responding to a demanding context. A shock to the system that helped us to nail down the multiple reflections we were having for a long time. We grabbed this opportunity to enhance team working, refine our motto, rethink methodologies, deepen our digital alphabetization and question ourselves constantly. GIUSI LARA We are confident we can offer you the best hybrid model, preserving the rigor of our methodology, the culture of the project and the artisanal touch of our labs, with the most advanced technologies while meeting the requirements of the new paradigm in education. Given this unique experience, these are the words that express better the significance of this rite of passage towards a new era.

The first is community: the sense of belonging. Belonging to a principle or an idea, a group of peers sharing the same interests, to a society and its features, belonging to the world as one. National borders have been closed recently, and some reopened, and we, as creative beings, have overcome these borders without travelling, but navigating the most advanced technological tools; we have been able /we are happy to to develop a community, which is not gathered in one specific place but it is as have you here, strong and bonding. as part of this The second word is responsibility: own our choices and decisions. Because the effects of past actions have affected your life, a propulsive engine in generation wiser and more sensible. How to become active subjects and not just passive receivers? Awareness, education terms of creativity, and being brave, when challenging the status quo: ownership of strategic, critical decisions and mistakes as part of a natural, constructive evolution. Being more responsible than before, or fighting harder to impact thinking and shock the change. to the system. These two words are what IED Madrid has to take in consideration when facing / this new exciting academic year. The city itself is emblematic in terms of sociable behavior, respect and sharing. Hedonism and responsibility go hand in hand creating a dialogue among the parts with an organic flow. These are in fact exciting times, and here at IED Madrid we experienced the power of self-questioning, adapting and responding and we are happy to have you here, as part of this propulsive engine in terms of creativity, strategic, critical thinking and shock to the system.

What do we have to do? just open the doors to you, welcome you and provide you with the tools to make this happen. Simple as that: no! challenging, while keeping updated with this constant reshape of contents and forms.

Let’s do it together in our community and may the sense of belonging be the driving force from now on and many years to come. The IED Group is an international network for education in Design and Management that was born in Italy in 1966 and today has twelve locations spread over Italy, and Brazil. The IED is currently one of the leading study centers in the fields of fashion, audiovisual, product design and interior design and since 2018 it belongs to anon-profit foundation, following the wish left in will by Francesco Morelli, its founder.

Fuencarral street separates this neighborhood from Malasaña. Chueca is well known for being the epicenter of the Pride Festivities that are celebrated the first week of July. In recent years it has become more than just a neighborhood, to chueca become a benchmark for the LGBT movement throughout the world. And it is no wonder: here began a trend towards the visibility of this group, which is now unstoppable. Its streets are home to designer shops and fashion brands, bars, restaurants and a very cosmopolitan environment, which stands out for its active night and day life.

Malasaña forms a square surrounded by Calle Gran Vía, Fuencarral, San Bernardo and Carranza. It owes its name to Manuela Malasaña, a heroine from Madrid in the May 2nd uprisings against French troops. In fact, its central point is the Plaza del Dos de Mayo. It is also a neighborhood closely linked to “la movida”, the cultural and social revolution that took place in the ‘80s. Any of its squares is pleasant to have a beer in the sun; We advise you to walk through its streets before sitting down and look at the variety and originality of its shops and bars. Malasaña hides secrets that will surprise you! la latina las letras

Located in the center of the city, it is known by this name because some of the most distinguished writers of the Golden Age of Spanish Letters (17th century) lived here. This neighborhood is also part of the downtown area. Its streets are of medieval origin, many Cervantes, Quevedo and Lope de Vega are some were considered the surroundings of Madrid and served as lodging for merchants who were of those who chose this neighborhood to live going to sell their products. This commercial tradition is what has given its name to many of their stays in Madrid and who gave their names its well-known corners such as the Plaza de la Cebada, the Plaza de los Carros, the Plaza de to many of its streets. The main one is Huertas, la Paja or the Rastro, the most famous open-air market in the city. We recommend you visit and its floors offer us verses by José Zorrilla this neighborhood on Sundays. Like its neighboring neighborhood La Latina, it is characterized by its narrow streets and irregular patterns. In the past cara it was inhabited mainly by the popular classes of the city. This has given rise to buildings with a peculiar physiognomy: houses of various heights built around a central courtyard, called corralas, the best example of which can be found at the confluence of Tribulete and Mesón de Paredes streets. Today it offers a bohemian atmosphere, with theaters and ban venues, and the most cosmopolitan population of the capital. It is the perfect mix between traditional and multicultural Madrid. chel lavapiés

Carabanchel is an industrial neighborhood in the process of change. Former industrial printers and textile workshops have been transformed into recording and painting studios, project incubators of innovation and, above all, in workshops and workspaces where creativity flows through manufacturing and production.
