David Geffen signed Black ‘N Blue to his label in ‘84 and they recorded four albums, the last two produced by KISS’ Gene Simmons. Tommy Thayer joined the KISS family at the sounding board and as a musical contributor. Over the years he co-wrote songs and produced CD and DVD projects for the band including the title montage for New Line Cinema’s “Detroit Rock City”. Last year he assumed guitarist Ace Frehley’s Spaceman persona and replaced him completely this year. It probably felt like a compromise working together. Not that the results ever came across that way. The original reels, along with several other recordings, which have come to be known as the “Houseboat Tapes,” were only recently discovered by former Grateful Dead and Jerry Garcia Band vocalist Donna Jean Godchaux. The chance finding is the subject of a Q&A with Godchaux in the current issue of Relix. Pre-order for GarciaLive Vol. Seven can be found at Garcia Family Provisions (http://jerrygarcia.shop.musictoday.com/). Once a supermarket, Sophie’s was an unassuming and intimate venue where the Jerry Garcia Band played four times in 1976. The hall eventually became the Keystone Palo Alto and hosted the group many more times through the years. Palo Alto itself holds a distinctive place in Garcia’s history. After a brief stint in the Army, it was where Garcia settled and became fully committed to music in the early 1960’s when he was teaching guitar and playing in bands around the area. With former Elvis Presley drummer Ron Tutt manning the throne, longtime Garcia collaborator John Kahn on bass, Keith Godchaux on keys and Donna Jean Godchaux on backing vocals, this ensemble performed almost 70 shows that year and became known as one of the Garcia Band’s strongest lineups.

On Friday, May 19th, The SteelDrivers will take the stage at 8:30 p.m. On Saturday, May 20th, Hard Working Americans will be the headliner, taking the stage at 8:00 p.m. The ninth annual outdoor sports and music festival will be held on Brown’s Island and Historic Tredegar in Richmond, Virginia, May 19-21, 2017. All concerts are free and open to the public. Touring in support of their most recent album ‘Rest In Chaos,’ the follow up to their critically acclaimed self- titled debut in 2014, Hard Working Americans offers a sound invoking the past, present, and future of rock’n’roll music. The group combines the talents of Todd Snider, Widespread Panic’s Dave Schools and Duane Trucks, Chris Robinson Brotherhood’s Neal Casal, Great American Taxi’s Chad Staehly, and Jesse Aycock to form a unique blues and southern rock sound and stage experience. The SteelDrivers, winner of the 2016 Grammy Award for Best Bluegrass Album, are a group of seasoned and distinguished veterans who blend their bluegrass roots with country, soul, and other contemporary influences.
