But exactly 150 years since its creation it has become a scourge on the planet and is responsible for the deaths of an estimated one million birds and 100,000 marine mammals annually. It takes approximately 500 years for a sin- gle piece of plastic to degrade, which means that every singleJ plastic bag, bottle, cup, straw or toothbrush that you have ever used in your life is sitting in land- fill, on a beach or at the bottom of the ocean. Scientists are finding microplastics in the food we eat, the water we drink and even in the air we breathe. According to a study by the University of Newcastle, Australia, the average human consumes about a credit card’s (5 grams) worth of plastic every week. Unfortu- nately, there haven’t been any long-term studies done to tell us what this is doing to our health. Recycling isn’t always the answer because plastic is downcycled, meaning that it can only be reused six times before it becomes unusable. Even when it is “re- cycled”, it’s turned into things like board shorts, which shed microfibres when you wash them. Biodegradable plastic isn’t an ideal solution either. It perpetuates a “buy-and-throw-away” mentality and requires sunlight to breakdown. The shop has been a favourite of mine for a very long time. The ambience is nice, the staff are welcom- ing and friendly, and the coffee is rich and strong. There are a variety of coffee drinks available on the menu, including the normal favourites such as Ameri- cano and espresso, as well as bottled cold brew coffee. Whole beans and grounded coffee are available to buy on-site, and I must say that the packaged organic cof- fee is some of the best that I have ever had. Hock Hoe Lee recently revamped their menu, and it includes many all-day breakfast favourites such as omelettes, eggs Benedict, baked egg skillets, muesli bowls and a variety of sandwiches. For those with a sweet tooth, there are a wide variety of baked pan- cakes to choose from. If coffee isn’t your drink, make sure to try the cold-pressed juices which are made fresh daily with local fruits and vegetables. Innovation drives the team behind Hock Hoe Lee, and they are always striving to find better ways of do- ing things, whether it be reducing plastic within their shop, roasting unique coffee beans together for dis- tinct flavours or serving up an array of interestingly crafted coffee drinks. The shop will soon start selling biograde aluminium foil coffee capsules with their sig- nature coffee inside, which is sure to please those who adore the convenience of coffee capsules and pods but without the unnecessary plastic waste.
