Ohio State - 42 Q. This was an extremely young team Oregon - 20 that you have. First of all, is this something that you thought would be coming perhaps another year, maybe not right now, particularly An Interview With: the way you started out, and secondly, could you talk about the future of the program and just how bright it is? URBAN MEYER: Well, I think , Zeke, I thought we had high expectations for Zeke because we saw what could do last year, but that EZEKIEL ELLIOTT group of sophomores that we have that really stepped up and played, they complemented the URBAN MEYER: I just want to on behalf seniors. Whenever you have a coaching of the and the great state of transition, there's usually a little bit of a blip or a Ohio and my players and coaching staff, I want to miss in the recruiting, and if our sophomore class tell the College Football Playoff committee and didn't step up, we wouldn't be where we are. I everyone associated with this incredible mean, it's incredible. A lot of them are redshirt experience that it was done first class, and I think freshmen, and yeah, to answer your question, I you have two great teams out there. We have a lot certainly did not see that happening after spring of respect for Oregon and Coach [Mark] Helfrich, practice and early in the season. But I but I love these players. This team wasn't undervalued -- I didn't quite understand the supposed to do this, but they fought through improvement that these guys could make. adversity, they got stronger and stronger and stronger, and this is a great team. We finished the Q. I wanted to ask you, you've been year a great team. To have four turnovers and still through this before. You've won the National beat a team like that 42-20, incredible experience. Championship before. At the same time, Ohio I don't want to get over dramatic, but it's as State means so much to you. What does it improved a football team, and I've watched football mean for you to bring Ohio State back to the for a long time from Game 1 to Game 15. I've pinnacle? never seen anything like it. URBAN MEYER: I'm not shy about the love I have for this great state. Ashtabula, Ohio, is Q. You guys turned the ball over four my hometown. I've got to travel all around the times. I think you said coming into this game country and I realized how fortunate I am to grow you couldn't do that and win this game. Is this up in a great town like that in a great state. I sort of a microcosm of all the adversity you played college football here, and to bring now a had to overcome this season to win this game? national title to the great state of Ohio, it's almost URBAN MEYER: It is, and it's also a surreal. testimony to the improvement our defense has made. We won that game because of course Zeke Q. I know you probably prefer not to Elliott and of course our offensive line, but our talk about yourself but maybe you can in this defense, to hold Marcus -- I know he threw for a one case. You do join one other person who's bunch of yards, 300-plus yards, but our defense, been able to bring two schools to a National we tackled tonight and did a great job. Championship. It was hard to be flustered or nervous or down when you have the other guys on defense playing the way they're playing, and then definitely when you've got the guys up front blocking the way they were blocking, we really felt like we could score any time we want. That's no disrespect to the Oregon defense, that's just the time and dedication we put in on offense, starting up front.

Q. Zeke, with these last three performances on the national stage, you're probably going to come into 2015 a frontrunner for the Heisman Trophy. Just wondering what your thoughts would be on a potential Heisman campaign. EZEKIEL ELLIOTT: It means everything. It's something you dream about as a kid when you're playing NCAA football and you create your little player, and he wins the Heisman. Just thinking that I'm going to have the opportunity next year to compete for the Heisman, just it means everything. I'm not going to change, I'm going to keep grinding. MARCUS MARIOTA Q. You were on the staff four years ago BYRON MARSHALL when you played Auburn in the championship game and lost. How does it feel different this time around? MARK HELFRICH: Very similar. Not very MARK HELFRICH: Well, first of all, good. But again, I think that the thing that it's congratulations to Ohio State and Gene Smith and always focused on tonight, there were a lot of great Urban Meyer for a fantastic season, played nights and great days with these guys that led up extremely well tonight, played extremely hard to tonight and caused tonight, and at some point tonight, and we knew we'd expect that and we'd we'll be able to relish those. I don't know when have to play really well to win. Could not be that happens anymore. But yeah, it's a tough, prouder to be associated or could not be prouder tough pill to swallow, knowing everything that to be associated with a greater group of guys than these guys put into this season and how much we the guys in that locker room, two of them up here want these guys to be successful in the minds of with me right now, and what these guys weathered everyone. and persevered through this season was amazing. Their highly sought-after guys and very talented guys offensive line did a really nice job. Again, our that do a lot of good things. Again, people talk, which I think is -- and I have to win a National Championship to solidify talked about this last week a little bit. It's everything, and I don't know if that's necessarily unfortunate and a little bit insulting in a lot of ways true. I think Dan Marino was a pretty good player that whoever loses this game, the word failure and some of these other guys that have legacies comes up as a descriptive for the season, and as I and not have a National Championship, two or told these guys in the locker room, that will never three bowl wins, depending on how you count it, exist in these guys' vocabulary, the way that and the stuff on the field, I think you could certainly they've persevered through what they've done and argue that this was the best, if not certainly one of the assistant coaches, everybody in our program, the top two or three greatest seasons in college every player to a tee has just battled and gutted football history. QUICKIE QUOTES FROM THE FIELD

Ohio State Head Coach Urban Meyer

“We play football for a lot of reasons, for the great state of Ohio, we play for an incredible university, The Ohio State University, but most important we play for each other. This is one of the closest teams in football history.

“The chase is complete. These guys accepted their final mission and did it. It was our final mantra the past few weeks and I’m very grateful for the work these guys put in.”

On Mariota: “And our defense. We slowed that guy down, and he’s one of the best players in the country. We tackled well. This is a heck of a football team in scarlet and gray and I want to celebrate with the guys I love.”

Ohio State Ezekiel Elliott

“This is a surreal moment. It’s why we all came here. After all we went through, this is crazy. It doesn’t feel real.” Ohio State Quarterback Cardale Jones

On the feeling of winning the championship“It’s even better than I thought. It’s an unreal feeling. The seniors never could win a bowl game in four years.
