Saint Timothy’s Messenger Timothy’s Episcopal Church, Athens A parish in the Diocese of Alabama July 2018 The mission of Saint Timothy’s Parish is, by the Grace of God, to worship, to proclaim by word and example, to serve others beyond the parish, and to nurture one another within the parish.

Belovedness Foster Eich: I have been wanting to write some thoughts for the newsletter. But I haven’t come up with much to say this month, except that it has been a real blessing and joy to me to be part of this community of faith, hope, and love. So I am going to let Ginger write some thoughts! She passed this to me the other day. It’s from notes she took at the Diocesan Convention in 2016. So this is Ginger writing:

Saint Timothy’s Episcopal Church I was deeply moved by the talk given by the keynote speaker, The Rev. Est. 1867 Tom Brackett. (He is the national Episcopal Church Officer for Church Planting and Ministry Redevelopment.)....He talked about the baptism of by John in the Jordan River, when a voice from Heaven said that Jesus was “my beloved.” He said that each of us is in search of “belovedness.” What we are usually given

is a sense of “importance,” rather than “belovedness.” In fact, we often seek a sense of being important, not realizing that it won’t meet our deep need for being

beloved. Father Brackett said that our feeling of a sense of importance is like “cheap calories”–it doesn’t meet our deepest need.

Our calling as Christian bodies is to be a community where the Holy

Spirit is present, where each of us knows that we are beloved, even though we are sinful creatures, and where we communicate to others, “YOU are God’s The Rev. Dr. Foster Eich Priest Affiliate beloved.” We are beloved by God, and we are not excluded from the “Holy of Weekly Services: Holy Eucharist Holies”–we belong IN the “Holy of Holies.” We KNOW that we are cherished Sundays 10:30 a.m. by God. We know that God wants us in a close relationship with himself–each

one of us. Church Office: 256-232-3541 Father Brackett encouraged us to ask ourselves, “What does it mean to [email protected] LIVE as God’s beloved?” Patti Whitaker Sr. Warden / - Ginger Eich Lay Eucharistic Visitor 256-874-0478

The Road Ahead of Me

Sometimes the world seems confusing and it is difficult for me to know what is the right thing to do or what is the right way to pray. When I am feeling especially distressed, I find that reading the prayers and thoughts of those who are far more discerning than I helps. The following is a prayer from Thomas Merton that I have found reassuring.

"My Lord God, I have no idea where I am going. I do not see the road ahead of me. I cannot know for certain where it will end. Nor do I really know myself, and the fact that I think I am following your will does not mean that I am actually doing so. But I believe that the desire to please you does in fact please you. And I hope I have that desire in all that I am doing. I hope that I will never do anything apart from that desire. And I know that if I do this you will lead me by the right road, though I may know nothing about it. Therefore will I trust you always, though I may seem to be lost and in the shadow of death. I will not fear, for you are ever with me, and you will never leave me to face my perils alone. [1]"

Saint Patrick’s Breastplate

"One of the perks of being in choir is the opportunity to have the words of the hymns really soak in, through constant repetition. We did one of my favorites a few weeks ago, and the words are very comforting to me."

Christ with me, Christ within me, Christ behind me, Christ before me, Christ beside me, Christ to win me, Christ to comfort and restore me,

Christ beneath me, Christ above me, Christ in quiet, Christ in danger, Christ in hearts of all that love me, Christ in mouth of friend and stranger.

Spotlight on Ministry: The Stitching Group

Purveyors of all things warm and comforting, the stitching group designs, fashions, and delivers the fruits of their labors to our neighbors in need in the community. Whether it’s providing warm garments for homeless kids, fashionable wares for chemo patients, or soft receiving blankets for premie-babies, these ladies give hours of their time to give smiles to others. The ladies also make stuffed animals to be handed out by police and fire fighters to children who have experienced tragedy. Prayer shawls have also been made for those in special need of comfort.

Great thought and care goes into each product. A project begins by thinking about the needs and style of the recipient—and praying for them. The maker then chooses the color and style of the garment accordingly, whether it be bright and cheerful, quirky and whimsical, or soft and soothing. Once colors and pattern are selected, the gifts are woven with a prayer to God to “help me make this and pass it on, and to pass on His love in what we’re doing.”

The ladies have formed a real comradery amongst themselves, so that their meetings have become not just an act of service, but an act of fellowship and worship. Bound by their common craft, the women convey a sense of blessing that they “have the skills to make someone else happy.”

While some of the yarn they use has been donated, most of it is provided by the ladies themselves. If you would like to know more about the group, or are interested in making a donation of materials, contact Jill Garfinkel or Peggy Strain.

Entering their fourth year of this ministry, the stitching group meets every Wednesday at 10:30 in the parlor of the church parish house.

Thank you, Stitching Group, for your part in making St. Timothy’s a loving, Christian community!
