  • Abba's :Album' Makes Listening Fun
Abba's :Album' Makes Listening Fun By Bernie Russell Start with Jackson Browne and Paul Simon and begin moving in the other direction; past the Eagles, past Fleetwood Mac, past the Bee Gees, and past Barry Manilow and you finally end up with Abba. Abba's music is as different from Browne's and Simon's as possible with its sumptious background arrangements, infectious melodies, triv ial lyrics, and perky delivery. Abba does not pretend to be innovative or even artistic in their music; their aim is purely, blatantly commercial success. In spite of this less than noble goal, Abba's music is terrific. Anyone who has heard their hits ''Mamma Mia'' and "Dancing Queen" knows that Abba's music has a contagiously happy sound that is all but irresistable. Abba's latest, simply called ''The Album,'' carries on their tradition elf light, escapist music and it is entertaining in the way an amusement park is entertaining. There's very little intellectual going on-certain ly nothing revolutionary-but the mood is so happy and energetic that it is impossible not to enjoy yourself. Every song on ''The Album'' has a melody so catchy that it lingers in the mind long after the record is over. The lyrics that go with these melodies are, as usual, very slight; such as "There gotta be rock'n rolVTo fill the hole in your soul.'' Much of the music.on "The Album" sounds like Fifties music that has been slicked up and transplanted into the Seventies. "Take a Chance on Me" has a beat like a polka that is occasionally interrupted by one of the singer's cooing "C'mon, gimme a break, baby" the way .

  • The Catherine Berg Summer Musical Theatre Will Be Presenting the Musical “Mamma Mia” on July 16 and 17 at 7:30 PM in the Claude C
The Catherine Berg Summer Musical Theatre will be presenting the musical “Mamma Mia” on July 16 and 17 at 7:30 PM in the Claude C. Deck Performing Arts Center. Tickets are $10.00 for adults and $8.00 for students and senior citizens and will be available at the door. The incredibly successful and wildly popular, “Mamma Mia,” production is sure to entertain with its high energy numbers and acting. The play is a jukebox musical written by British playwright Catherine Johnson, based on the songs of ABBA composed by Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus, former members of the band. The title of the musical is taken from the group's 1975 chart-topper "Mamma Mia". Twenty-year-old Sophie has big news. She is getting married to the love of her life. The problem is, who should walk her down the aisle since she took a peek at her mother's diary and realizes she has three possible dads. Sophie yearns to know more about her past, so she secretly sends each man a wedding invitation, hoping she can find out the truth. Her mother Donna, has plans of her own as she prepares for an elegant but simple wedding with the help of two old friends. The action takes place on the idyllic island of Greece and is jam packed with the delightful music of the 70's and 80's Swedish band, ABBA. What a way to say hello to summer and goodbye to a pandemic with songs like, "Dancing Queen," "Our Last Summer," "The Name of the Game," "Take a Chance on Me," "Thank You for the Music," and many more.

  • Beethoven 'Was' the Pop Writer for the Classical Era. ABBA Were Influenced by This
FAMOUS ABBA FANS TALK: SUZI QUATRO QUOTE: “Beethoven 'was' the pop writer for the classical era. ABBA were influenced by this. It’s in every song they ever wrote.” Undoutably, Suzi Quatro broke down the barriers for many female rock stars with her tough leather-clad look and catchy pop/rock tunes during the glam rock years of the early 70s. A big ABBA fan herself, Suzi enthusiastically accepted the offer to join our Famous ABBA Fans Gallery. With her fantastic cover of Does Your Mother Know that she recently recorded, she certainly deserves her place in the ABBA annals. I met Suzi at the Stag Studios in Essex (“It's a nice little studio. On my new box set there is the track Desperado with Jeff Beck, and I recorded the piano and the vocals here”), where she rehearsed for her upcoming BBC radio show in celebration of her 50 years in the music business. At what time did ABBA enter your life and did you become a fan? I worked with ABBA way back when Ring Ring was a single. We did a TV show together in Belgium and lots of TV after that. We ran into each other quite a bit. Their style wasn't exactly finalised yet. I didn't actually become a fan until Waterloo. I thought they were fab and turned the Eurovision Song Contest on its head. What are your memories of meeting the ABBA members? Nice people - very normal. In your opinion what is the greatest merit of ABBA's music? The simplicity.

LAST LORDNAIRNE 37 FACSIMILEOF LADYNAIRNE'S HANDWRITING . 47 THE SCOTTISH SONGSTRESS CAROLINE BARONESS NAIRNE can tell the power of music and of song ? Although the essence of time, they transcend time. As the wind or as the sunshine, their influence is everywhere, yet undefined. It may be like a breeze or a storm, a stray ray or the meridian glory. It is all around us. We are but the losers if our capacity be small. Oliver Wendell Holmes calls music a "bath for the soul.'' Shall we call it a tideless sea, or an atmosphere of light? For those who love solidity, music is like a temple or a shrine where the greatest in all ages have laid their offering, or at least inscribed their names, ere they passed on into 8 THE SCOTTISH SONGSTRESS what is darkness to us and purer light to them. But though the singers pass on, what they were at their best remains in their song. The mother sings the lullaby at the cradle; the " toddlin' wean " runs an errand to the nearest shop, humming it as it goes ; and thus a stream of song is set aflowing. We had grown up so loving and learning Lady Nairne's songs; that it was a special joy to stand, in the summer of 1893, near the spot, at once her birthplace and her grave, where, as another poet wrote, " Lady Nairne had walked and ridden, and loved and sung, till Strathearn, that made Caroline Oliphant so beautiful and such a poet, was made by her more lovely and lyric still.'' It was nearly fifty years by the calendar since the day that her eyes were closed to all that lovely land.
