Delivered homes and businesses APRIL 2021 Hello and a warm welcome to the April issue of My Village News.

This year in particular, has to be one of the most anticipated spring times, after the lock down and the cold dark days, we are all looking forward to the times when we can go that bit further, visit family and friends, enjoy the spring weather and gardens. BeWilderwood in Bickley on the A49 has waited in the wings to open after they started work early 2020 and soon will be open, you can read all about his exciting venture on our doorstep on page 30

David Hayns has kindly sent us another interesting read, on Canals Worth Exploring. With that in mind we telephoned cousin Garry who has a narrow boat moored at the marina, to select a photograph from the many he has taken over the years while cruising on the Jacaranda for our front page this month.

Martin & Janet Blow from Plant Hunters have once again provided us with gardening delights. They are hoping their fairs will go ahead this year, and so are we.

See you when we are out and about Ann & John.

BeWILDerwood, the Curious Treehouse Adventure, and Cheshire’s most anticipated outdoor adventure park have announced they are opening this April!

Tickets for BeWILDerwood’s second park will be on sale from 12pm on the 4th of March, ahead of its opening with a bang and a sparkle on the 12th of April 2021. The unique woodland adventure park is located next to the historic Cholmondeley Castle, in South Cheshire.

After a year spent indoors, families can get outside and get back to nature with a fun-filled active day out at BeWILDerwood. Think of the biggest wonky wooden play structures and treehouses you can imagine, high up in the trees. A massive, muddled maze to get lost in, wobbly zip wires and giant slippery slides. All located in an enchanted woodland.

The Curious Treehouse Adventure will bring something new to the area. Beautifully designed in keeping with its natural surroundings, BeWILDerwood is unlike other attractions; there are no noisy rides, no electronics, and no junk food. There are also no hidden costs, so families can truly immerse themselves into the wonky world of BeWILDerwood during their visit, with all activities and crafts included in the ticket price!

Alan Jackson When we are able to hear our best, there’s nothing to stop us from enjoying the sounds of laughter, music, nature or conversations with family and friends. Hearing these sounds sustains us and undeniably makes moments more memorable and life more fulfi lling.

At Nantwich Hearing Centre, our goal is simply to help all our customers hear their very best. We take the time to talk and to fully understand the diffi culties you are experiencing and how these impact on your physical, social and emotional well-being. Our extensive knowledge of the very latest hearing technology, developed and supplied by a range of leading manufacturers, enables us to fi nd a solution that is right for you. As a small, independent, audiology practice we are able to ensure that all our customers receive the individual care and support they need during initial consultations, whilst adapting to a new hearing system and beyond. Ongoing after-care is so important in ensuring that customers get full benefi t from their hearing device and that their investment is worthwhile. We pride ourselves on our excellent customer service and the long-term relationships we develop with our customers. Our clinic is located in the heart of Nantwich and we are open 5 days a week, offering hearing consultations, a clinical wax removal service and advice on hearing protection products and tinnitus solutions. Looking after our hearing is so important for our overall health, especially as we get older. Hearing well keeps our minds attentive and sharp, helps us maintain an active lifestyle, keeps us connected to family and friends and makes everyday life easier. When our hearing is impaired our sense of space shrinks, warning cues get missed and we withdraw from social situations. This leaves our physical and mental health vulnerable.

Adults with hearing loss are up to 5 times more likely to develop dementia. Hearing loss is linked toa three-fold risk of falling. Accidental injuries are up to 50 percent more likely for people with hearing loss. More than anything else, our hearing keeps us connected to the world around us. Whether it’s communicating with friends and family, interacting with colleagues, enjoying a concert, fi lm or TV show, or just hearing the birds singing in your garden – when you hear better, you simply live better. Don’t let hearing loss hold you back. Give us a call and let’s have a conversation about how we can help.

When I was warden at the Beeston Outdoor Education Centre during the 1970s, one of the favourite walks for school parties who were staying at the Centre took in the stretch of the Chester Canal between Bunbury Locks and Beeston Brook. There was so much history to explore, including the two staircase locks and old stables at Bunbury; the former water mill and wharf at ; and Thomas Telford’s cast iron lock at Beeston. The stables at Bunbury, still in use as boat workshops, were one of three sets which served the busy canal between and Wolverhampton, stabling which provided changes of horses in a similar manner to the posting stops on the old turnpike roads. Tilstone Fearnall had been a corn mill. Alongside the mill building, now a private residence but operating as a Scout activity centre in the 1970s, can be seen the barest remains of the once busy wharf to which grain would have been brought by narrow boat, to be shipped out again as fl our or animal meal. The enormous former mill pond, running beside the canal, is very overgrown although it now provides a catchment for the canal overfl ow weir just above Tilstone Lock. At Beeston Brook there had originally been a system of two stone-built locks, with the canal on a slightly different alignment. These kept collapsing due to the fact that below them was a deep seam of running sand. Some readers may recall the former huge Hoveringham quarry further up the A.49, which exploited that same sand. James Brindley had been the original engineer for the canal, opened from Chester to Huxley in 1775 and extended to Nantwich in 1779, but it was Thomas Telford who was contracted by the canal company in 1828 to solve the running sand problem. His solution was to construct a giant cast-iron trough, pinning it far back into the banks. He had previously used cast iron in 1805, on a much more extensive scale, for his famous Ponytcysyllte aqueduct on the Llangollen Canal.

Fifty years on from my time at the Outdoor Education Centre, the Bunbury to Beeston stretch and the towpath of the Llangollen Canal, between Marbury and the junction with the Whitchurch arm, still provide two of my favourite walking routes, fi lled with interest at any season. The Chester Canal had been planned originally to run to but was fi nally routed to Nantwich, with a branch from Barbridge to Middlewich opened eventually in the 1820s. In 1795 another canal had been proposed, to link the Chester Canal at Newton, near Tattenhall, with Whitchurch. This proposal failed to achieve the necessary Act of Parliament, perhaps because it would have run through the Bolesworth Estate, close to Bolesworth Castle itself. The more roundabout link with Whitchurch came in 1805 with the opening of a new canal, leaving the Chester Canal at Hurleston to reach Llangollen. This new canal had a double purpose. As well as providing a valuable navigation, for transporting such commodities as limestone, Welsh slate, granite, and iron from the Ruabon foundries, it served as an open aqueduct to bring water from the Horseshoe Falls, on the River Dee at Llangollen, down to the water works at Hurleston.

Call 01829 720509 or email [email protected] 58 to place your advertisement APRIL 2021 Although originally there was an agreement, between the canal company and the River Dee Company, to return to the Dee at Chester the water taken from it at Llangollen, only about ten per cent of the water actually made it back to the river! An important wharf was developed at Grindley Brook, to serve Whitchurch, Malpas and the surrounding areas. In 1808 a separate arm was cut, fi nally completed in 1811, to take boats right into Whitchurch itself. By the beginning of the second World War commercial traffi c on the canal had fallen away and eventually the Whitchurch arm was abandoned and largely fi lled in. In 1986 the Whitchurch Waterway Trust was formed, with the aim of re-opening the arm. This proved impracticable but the Trust, undaunted, still has plans to extend the present stub of the arm and to create a new boat basin nearer the town. Canals declined signifi cantly in commercial importance after the war and those such as the Chester and the Llangollen, both part of the Shropshire Union system, suffered from lack of maintenance. It was Chester born canal enthusiast Tom Rolt who in his book ‘Narrow Boat’ (1944) particularly helped to raise awareness among the general public of the unique asset that is our national canal network. In 1962 the British Waterways Board was established to manage the country’s inland waterways, transferring responsibilities in 2012 to the newly founded charity The Canal and River Trust. With the help of thousands of tireless volunteers, the Trust has made great strides in maintaining, upgrading and operating the canals. It is thanks to them and their predecessors that we can enjoy the two beautiful stretches passing through the My Village News area, bringing opportunities for so much pleasure, exercise and contemplation, whether we navigate them by boat or in our boots. Boats must observe a maximum speed limit of 4 mph and, in the words of boatman Jack quoted by Tom Rolt in ‘Narrow Boat’: ‘If no-one went faster than what I do, there’d be a sight less trouble in this world’! 62 Village News APRIL 2021 MALPAS Malpas Parish Council has received a number of complaints regarding vehicles parked with the engines running on Old Hall Street (near the McCarthy Stone development) and at Oathills (near the Bishop Heber High School). The Council wishes to communicate, via local publications, that it is illegal for vehicles to park with the engines running, and harmful particularly to those with respiratory problems. Malpas High Street Church: We are sorry, but due to government guidelines we still remain closed for worship and availability to groups. Our Ministers can be contacted on the following numbers - Rev’d Rob Weir on 01948 663936 or Rev’d David Hamblin on 01270 625789, should you wish to speak them. Chess Malpas & Friends online chess teams continue to fl ourish. We have 4 teams, with 4 in each team, in the the 4NCL, two in Division 2, one on Division 4 and one in the bottom Division, Division 7. We have two teams, with 6 in each team, in the 5Counties League. This league has 3 Divisions and we have teams in the top two Divisions. The second team is currently top of Division 2 with fi ve wins out of fi ve. Both these leagues play in Tuesdays. On Thursdays we have 4 teams of 3 in the Welsh League. We also play in a quick-play league. I also organise the Oswestry A and Oswestry B teams in the Shropshire League. Most of these leagues are coming to the end of the season. I hope to run a Cheshire & North Wales side again, in the English Counties Online League, like I did last summer. If anyone wants to play or learn about chess, either over-the-board or online chess, please contact me, Charles Higgie, [email protected] or Charles Lowick Higgie on Facebook. WHITCHURCH WALKERS During the pandemic, our Whitchurch Walkers group has managed to adapt and is very much thriving. As soon as regulations relaxed, we set up a programme of Small Group Walks which was hugely successful. From the beginning of January, we suggested the idea of a “buddy system”, whereby, should anyone like to walk with another person (following current guidelines), they are able to contact another like-minded walker from our group. Any group member wishing to take up this opportunity is able to contact Peter Stockbridge So, where do we stand now? We are very much hoping to resume our small group walks as soon as restrictions ease up, hopefully from March 29th. Please keep checking our website Our 2021 Walking Festival: We are planning to hold a modifi ed Walking Festival this year. It will depend on the government guidelines at the time, but we are assuming that we will be allowed to have groups of up to six people on walks. As soon as our “Small Group Walks” programme restarts, we shall inform our members by e-mail. If you would like to join the walks, why not join the group? Membership costs just £5 per year. Please do not forget to follow the Countryside Code!
