from the Pastor. . . PRAY, FAST, LISTEN, DISCERN, ACT By Father Dan Noll Father Dan As I write this article on August 25, we are in the very early stages of responding to the Pennsylvania Grand Jury Report on sexual abuse by Roman Catholic clergy and church personnel. The vast majority of the cases reported are from the past. There has been a lot of change for the better in the Church to address the issue of sexual abuse more effectively and compassionately. BUT, there is MUCH MORE that needs to be done.

I am committed to fast and pray so that I can listen and really hear, and then discern and then act in ways that will help make the changes that are needed. I will not do this alone. I will keep listening to you, I will join with you and with priests in Lexington for an hour each week, in prayer, fasting, discussion and decision-making, that will bring about action. As the processes for this get more fully established, I pledge to keep you fully informed.

Below is what I have heard so far, from the Listening Session we had on August 21, and from the input I have received since. Let’s keep the process going, in hope. • Civil law must be followed to remove and prosecute church leaders today who have ever committed sexual abuse. • Review, revise and communicate the criteria to enter the Seminary. • Rebuild trust in our church leadership with accountability, transparency & frequent communications to be the standard. • Feeling shock/anger/disappointment that we are facing the same child abuse issues again; yet, grounded in the Church and Christ. Communication and action are required. • Feeling anger and disappointment, leading to questioning their membership in the Catholic church. Requires listening, communication and action to regain their trust. • Hopeful, optimistic, prayerful & committed to resolving the issues this time and not allowing them to reoccur. • Transparency, humility and frequent communications will help build trust and confidence that the issues are being addressed. • Victims are to be heard, validated and receive confirmation that this should not happen to them. NEXT DEADLINE FOR OCTOBER NEWS IS SEPTEMBER 28, 2018! . . . from Walter Leachman It has been an honor and a pleasure to serve as Mary Queen’s Business Manager for the past 18 years. The Holy Spirit has showered me with countless blessings and I am the most blessed person in the world. I want to thank each of you for your love, care, and support of the parish.

The parish is in wonderful hands with the new Business Manager - Brian Carlson.

I will be seeing you around. Thanks for all you do and God bless you!

Welcome new Business Manager Brian Carlson

With the retirement of Walter Leachman, Brian Carlson steps into some very big shoes as the new Business Manager for Mary, Queen of the Holy Rosary Catholic Church. His responsibilities cover overseeing all the financial needs of the church. Currently, he is in the process of employing both a new Bookkeeper and Facilities Manager.

Brian appreciates the opportunity to serve our church and will be readily available to talk about anyone’s needs. He has an ‘open door’ policy though you can contact him at 859-278-7432 or by email to [email protected].

A longtime parishioner (13 years) of Mary Queen, Brian worked as a Financial Analyst at Conduent here in Lexington (initially known as XEROX). He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting from Wayne State University in Detroit, MI. and is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA). He has taught Sunday children’s formation and has been a youth group volunteer. Currently he volunteers as coordinator for the Altar Servers.

He is raising three boys; Gus, 18 who is attending the University of Kentucky, Max, 15 who attends Henry Clay, and Huck, 11 who is in the seventh grade at Winburn Middle School.

Away from work, Brian is a big sports fan, especially baseball. He used to coach Little League and soccer and is an avid reader and movie fan of suspense and science fiction.

Brian is excited and looks forward to his interactions with the Mary Queen staff and parishioners.

Luke 6:38

Dear Fellow Parishioners,

Father Dan, Flo Lankster, and I had the chance to meet with Father Mark Pranaitis, Director of Catholic Charities from the Diocese of Gary, Indiana regarding the Diocesan Annual Appeal. Father Mark has been charged with coordinating the entire Diocesan Annual Appeal process along with the help of Father Jim Sichko for the Diocese of Lexington. tŚĂƚ/ĞŶũŽLJĞĚŵŽƐƚĂďŽƵƚƚŚĞŵĞĞƚŝŶŐǁĂƐ&ĂƚŚĞƌDĂƌŬ͛ƐĨŽĐƵƐŽŶŐĞŶĞƌŽƐŝƚLJ͘dŚĞǁŽƌĚƐ͞ĨŝŶĂŶĐĞƐ͟Žƌ͞ŵŽŶĞLJ͟ƌĂƌĞůLJ came up. He spoke about the importance of creating a culture or community of generosity at each parish. He detailed his experiences in parishes throughout the United States that when generosity was the focus, the parish flourished in all aspects of their ministry. Generosity, in all its forms, makes us more Christ-like and strengthens our spiritual bond to the Lord.

Father Mark gave a great example of generosity that I think totally encompasses ƚŚĞŚƵƌĐŚ͛Ɛ view of stewardship in general. The example is this: Father Mark noticed that a parishioner stopped giving their usual sum to the Church one year. Curious, but also concerned it was something he did, Father Mark met with the individual one evening. As their conversation drifted to financial stewardship, Father Mark asked her if it was something he did that altered her donation to the parish. Not at all, she responded. In fact, her niece was attending college and a scholarship had fallen through thus leaving her ability to attend in doubt. Moved by compassion and generosity, this parishioner used the money she ƐĞƚĂƐŝĚĞĨŽƌƚŚĞWĂƌŝƐŚƚŽƉĂLJĨŽƌŚĞƌŶŝĞĐĞ͛ƐĐŽůůĞŐĞƚƵŝƚŝŽŶ͘

One last story of generosity. This one comes from a little closer to home. There is a story my Grandmother used to tell my Dad, aunts and uncles about HER grandmother. During World War I, my great, great Grandmother, a widow with several children, was approached by a group of people raising money for the Red Cross to help the war effort. Moved by ƐŽŵĞƚŚŝŶŐƐŚĞĐŽƵůĚŶ͛ƚƋƵŝƚĞĚĞƐĐƌŝďĞ͕ƐŚĞƉůĞĚŐĞĚΨϭϬϬƚŽƚŚŝƐŐƌŽƵƉ͕ŬŶŽǁŝŶŐƚŚĂƚƐŚĞŚĂĚĂďƐŽůƵƚĞůLJŶŽĨƵŶĚƐ͘ She was admonished by her family: what was she thinking making such a pledge when she had mouths to feed and no husband to help support the family? She, however, a convert to the Catholic faith, had complete trust in the Lord's providence. Later that same day, a man only known to her as a business associate of her late husband, stopped by. He said that he had owed her husband money for some time and was just now able to repay it. He apologized for the delay and handed her the money. The amount? $100.

In both of these situations, the Church itself never received a dime. However, do both of these examples represent wholly what God wants of us in regards to Stewardship? Yes, 100%! I know the tendency of this time of year is to start ĨŝŐƵƌŝŶŐǁŚĞƌĞƚŚĞŚƵƌĐŚĨŝƚƐŝŶLJŽƵƌďƵĚŐĞƚ͘/͛ǀĞĚŽŶĞŝƚŵLJƐĞůĨ͘dŚŝƐLJĞĂƌ instead, I ask you where you can be more generous in your life. Family Ministry Camping: The summer has flown by, we have 3 fun camping trips in the books, one Bible Study: We are currently studying cancelled, 2 to go (Carter Caves, Labor the Formed study on The Eucharist. Our faith is the Smokys! so rich and deep as we realize God’s plan from the beginning of time traced through the Old Testament, fulfilled in the New Testament through Jesus, leading us to eternity.

You can watch these excellent studies on your own through the MQ parish Formed subscription, as well as movies, reflections, etc. What a treasure. Go to Formed.org, use MQ’s code: B2J8M7 and set up your own account and then feast on the wide variety of resources.

The next study is the Formed study on Peter: The character of St. Peter is both inspiring and confounding to many of us. How could a stubborn and impulsive fisherman become the "rock" upon which Jesus would build his Church? Bringing together biblical accounts, historical evidence, Church teaching, classical art, and personal insights, Dr. Tim Gray gives a fresh perspective on Simon Peter that is immediately informative and relevant to our lives. After all, if Jesus could bring out the very best in someone like Peter, then there is hope for the rest of us.

This 10 week study will run on Tuesday mornings, 9-10:30, Oct 2 - Dec. 4. Another session is offered on Wed. nights, 7:00- Young at Heart It’s time to celebrate our “Young at Heart” (89 and older).

What is Dismissal?

When a person is going through the process to become Catholic, commonly called RCIA, there are different aspects of formation. Those who are unbaptized (called Catechumens) are dismissed after the Homily. During this dismissal, they reflect on the readings and how they are relevant in their own lives. This is an important part of their formation and gives them the opportunity to share their joys and spiritual experiences each week.

Dismissal also teaches us that the Catechumens are not yet members of the faithful. There is a difference between the unbaptized and baptized and we have different roles and functions. They remind those of us who are Catholic who we are - members of the royal priesthood.

We are not sending the Catechumens away - but sending them out to do the work that is beneficial to their formation. They focus more intently on the Word and listen deeply to God's call to them as they journey towards Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist at the Easter Vigil April 20, 2019.

We hope the Mary Queen community will become more familiar with the Catechumens at our parish and be excited in anticipation for them to become Catholic! English Women English Men September 27-30, 2018 February 21-24, 2019
