He laughs that reading scientific studies has long been a guilty pleasure. Reading investor letters has long been one of mine. What I hope to accomplish here is to give you insight into what has transpired behind the scenes in ways you might not have otherwise heard about. Many of you attended our most recent board meeting in New York, where many of these topics were addressed. But for all twelve of you, I hope that this provides a deeper look into what you have at your organization. We often chose not to defend ourselves against much of the criticism, largely in an effort to stay true to the ideal of having the longest view in the room. Trust the Process: Tanking in the NBA Abstract This study assumes the tournament incentives inherent in the National Basketball Association (NBA) based on a study by Taylor and Trogdon (2002). Incentive to tank or lose intentionally, which is encouraged by the reverse-order and lottery-based draft system of the NBA, is examined and validated. A modified ersionv of Taylor and Trogdon’s logistic regression model and the data from the 2016-17 and 2017-18 seasons are employed. My findings aligned closely with the esultsr from the original study. They suggested that the teams eliminated from the playoffs responded to tournament incentives in a predictable manner whereas the confounding effects of incentives prevent the teams that had already clinched the playoffs to behave predictably. The addition of game outcome expectation data from sports betting as a dependent variable conveyed the idea that the incentive to tank is overestimated by the public and in calculation of betting odds. As rule changes in the NBA have made for a foster game predicated on skill and savvy, the American player pipeline has never been less prepared. The findings of this thesis are that NBA organizations should formalize their decision- making processes with repeatable strategies and specific tools that align with the strategic plan and vision of the organization, in order to maximize team performance and pursue NBA championships.

After sitting out the 2013-14 season, Noel had a very successful rookie year with per game averages of 9.9 points, 8.1 rebounds, and 1.9 blocks. Just before the 76ers got their first glimpse of Noel at the 2014 Summer League, they obtained both Joel Embiid and Dario Saric during the first round of the 2014 NBA Draft, knowing beforehand that both of these promising big men wouldn't see playing time right away. Embiid was coming off an injury to his foot, and Saric chose to remain playing overseas. Eventually, both Saric and Embiid will take the court for the 76ers, but with Noel already in the picture, how do they both fit into the team's plans? The situation became more perplexing when the 76ers drafted Duke big man, Jahlil Okafor, with the 3rd overall pick in the 2015 NBA Draft. It's a puzzling move for Hinkie, who drafted Okafor knowing both Embiid and Saric were getting that much closer to making their NBA debut.

(Under the direction of Dr. CRAIG A DEPKEN II) In 2017, Forbes estimated the NBA made around $5.9 billion dollars in revenue the previous season, with each individual franchise worth an average of $1.36 billion; both figures were up from the year before. The ability to successfully draft players plays a crucial role in a franchise’s ability to be successful by winning championships and increase the worth of the franchise, this fact is only magnified in the smaller markets. A small market is a franchise that is in a smaller metropolitan area, the Memphis Grizzles or the Indiana Pacers for example. This paper examines the value of the top-tier draft picks with respect to change in team wins the following three years, while controlling for changes in labor contracts. Philadelphia sports fans’ pride and spirit is legendary. FOOTBALL: The Pros: The Philadelphia Eagles took to the football field for the first time in 1933. The Birds enjoyed early success in the franchise’s history, winning three championships in 1948, 1949 and 1960. In 1980 the Eagles defeated their rival Dallas Cowboys in the NFC Championship before falling to the Oakland Raiders in Super Bowl XV. In 2005, quarterback Donovan McNabb and coach Andy Reid led the team into Super Bowl XXXIX. There, they fell to the Tom Brady- and Bill Belichick-led New England Patriots.
