$400,000 Pat Day Mile Presented by LG&E and KU (Grade III) 95th Running – Saturday, May 4, 2019 (Kentucky Derby Day) 3-Year-Olds at One Mile on Dirt at Churchill Downs Stakes Record – 1:34.18, Competitive Edge (2015) Track Record – 1:33.26, Fruit Ludt (2014) Name Origin: Formerly known as the Derby Trial, the one-mile race for 3-year-olds was moved from Opening Night to Kentucky Derby Day and renamed the Pat Day Mile in 2015 to honor Churchill Downs’ all-time leading jockey Pat Day. Day, enshrined in the National Museum of Racing’s Hall of Fame in 2005, won a record 2,482 races at Churchill Downs, including 156 stakes, from 1980-2005. None was more memorable than his triumph aboard W.C. Partee’s Lil E. Tee in the 1992 Kentucky Derby. He rode in a record 21 consecutive renewals of the Kentucky Derby, a streak that ended when hip surgery forced him to miss the 2005 “Run for the Roses.” Day’s Triple Crown résumé also included five wins in the Preakness Stakes – one short of Eddie Arcaro’s record – and three victories in the Belmont Stakes. His 8,803 career wins rank fourth all-time and his mounts that earned $297,914,839 rank second. During his career Day lead the nation in wins six times (1982-84, ’86, and ’90-91). His most prolific single day came on Sept. 13, 1989, when Day set a North American record by winning eight races from nine mounts at Arlington Park.

  • Bill Oppenheim, Dec
Bill Oppenheim, Dec. 16, 2009–Roll The Dice FROM THE DESK OF... Bill Oppenheim ROLL THE DICE Predictability. Well, who wouldn=t like a crystal ball? Mine might be slightly less clouded than others, but anybody who tells you they can predict which sires are going to be successful, and which aren=t, is deluding somebody. There=s a long history of can=t-miss stallion prospects who ended up on foreign shores, and equally a distinguished roll-call of relative nobodies (Distorted Humor, Pivotal) who=ve become household names in the breeding world. Write it down a 100 times: what they do on the racetrack isn=t necessarily what they=re going to do as a sire. In recent years, stallions that were unproven when the horses were bred have sired more than their share of good horses in their first or second crops. It wasn=t just a sales ploy, though for a while there you had a better chance of making money by using first-year sires regardless of whether they ended up good, bad, or indifferent. Rather the opposite is the case during recessionary times--breeders tend to fall back on the proven commodities, and the unproven sire becomes a more difficult sell. You can particularly see this when, as now, the prices on proven sires have fallen so much. Thus, I have knocked out from consideration as When you have legitimately good stallions standing for >value= unproven sires five horses who stand for more $7,500 and $10,000, the unproven horse at that and than $40,000: F2008 Bernardini ($60,000 first all higher prices has to offer something really special to two-year-olds 2010); F2009 Street Sense ($50,000); attract those breeders who were fighting over them and F2010 Curlin ($60,000) and Big Brown ($55,000)-- two years ago.

SATURDAY, JANUARY 6, 2018 SHIFTING BACK TO THE CENTER GUN RUNNER, ARROGATE by Robert D. Fierro TO BATTLE ONE LAST TIME It appears that North American Classic winners are moving back toward the center of the breed, both phenotypically and--if FOR HORSE OF THE YEAR it were still being updated--by Dosage Index. Say what? If one can wrap one's head around that hypothesis stated in the opening paragraph, this could be very interesting news for those who have worried for about a quarter of a century that the breed was "shortening up"--in effect, no longer producing the types of Classic horses which breeders produced since the importation of *Nasrullah, *Princequillo and *Royal Charger. Let's start at the beginning. It is generally accepted that the most influential tool developed for assessing pedigree balance in the past half-century is the Dosage Profile developed by Dr. Franco Varola. • Oscar's 2008 Travers Green Sheet
OSCAR’S 2008 TRAVERS GREEN SHEET “IT’S A GRADE I STAKE, BUT WHERE’S THE BEEF?” The table is set ($1 million place setting); the venue is outstanding (what could be better than the SPA in summer?). There’s even a top class restaurant nearby (Siro’s is only a sprint distance away), but as for the menu? To quote from the dearly departed octogenarian Sara Peller, “Where’s the beef?” Racing fans are always hungry for a good stake. The Travers usually satisfies our appetite by presenting a selection of the best 3 year-olds in the country. This year, however, the menu contains a lot of Kentucky Derby leftovers. What would have been the prime choices are either passing the race (Big Brown), deceased (Eight Belles) or injured (Denis of Cork). What’s left on the menu is competitive in ability, if somewhat disappointing in talent. There is the Belmont winner Da’Tara, but the Belmont was his only win outside of his maiden score. There are the Derby also rans Pyro, Colonel John, Tale of Ekati, Cool Coal Man and Court Vision; none of whom whet the appetite the way they once did leading up to the Derby, and now more truly represent the Derby’s sponsor Yum Brands – running more like fast food than the Galloping Gourmet! What about some new ingredients to spice up this stake? Tizbig, Mambo in Seattle, Amped, Harlem Rocker, and Tres Borrachos? Actually they are more like salt and pepper than curry powder! Some additional flavoring but hardly Fra Diavolo.
