LESLIE COMPTON in his playing days. LESLIE COMPTON gave Arsenal 20 years of dedicated service - spanning two of the great eras in the club's history. Leslie joined the Gunners from Athenian League side Hampstead Town in February. 1932, and made his league debut three months later, at Aston Villa. In those days, Leslie was a full back - but his first team chances were severely limited by the brilliance of two of Highbury's greatest heroes, George Male and Edd ie Hapgood. Leslie maoaged 67 league games in the eight seasons before the war. He had the consolation of' collecting five London Combination championship medals with our all conquering reserve team, as he kept plugging away for his big chance at Highbury. War time fo;:itball saw Leslie appear in every position except on the wings. He made some memorable high scoring appearances at centre forward. He once netted ten goals in a game against Leyton Orient! When league football resumed in 1946, Leslie finally established himself as a first teamer - at centre half. ' Big Leslie' and 'Bombhead' were two of the nicknames the packed Highbury crowds pinned on the popular Compton. He was one of the most dominant defenders in the Football League. His power in the air turned into a legend . ,fi A desperate Graham He didn't score many goals from his defensive position - but his most famous score Roberts tackle foils Ian became one of Arsenal's most important goals. """""""'"""'.tJ:•4£11 Allinson. We were trailing 1-2 to Chelsea in the 1950 Cup semi-final at Tottenham. Leslie came charging forward for a corner. Skipper Joe Mercer tried to wave him back. Leslie didn't see him. He raced into the box, leaped for the corner, and headed the Gunners equaliser! We won the replay 1-0 - and Leslie stood firm in our Wembleyarsenal.com team that beat Liverpool 2-0. That Cup winners' medal completed Leslie's domestic collection. It stood alongside the championship medal he'd won with our title team of 1948. Leslie won four unofficial wartime England caps. But he only played two peacetime internationals. He still holds one off-beat record. He was the oldest player ever to make his England debut when he was capped against Wales in 1950 - at the age of 38! Like his b;other, Dennis, Leslie was another of the post-war footballer/ cricketers. He played for Arsenal in the winter, then donned his whites for Middlesex in the summer - roles that would be almost impossible to combine these days. Leslie finished his playing days in 1952, and joined the Highbury coaching staff. In later years, he confined his sporting activities to bowls. But he always kept up his Arsenal connections. He watched most of our home games from a seat in the east stand paddock. Leslie was one of the nice men of football. He was a popular figure at Highbury over 30 years after he'd finished playing - not just with older fans, but with people who weren't even born when he was nodding away all those high centres. He will be sadly missed. Late in the second half ... Viv Anderson sends a header flashing wide as we search for the thearsenalhistory.com equaliser. CRICKET MEMORABILIA SOCIETY POSTAL AUCTION CLOSING AT NOON 10th JULY 2020 Conditions of Postal Sale The CMS reserves the right to refuse items which are damaged or unsuitable, or we have doubts about authenticity. Reserves can be placed on lots but must be agreed with the CMS. They should reflect realistic values/expectations and not be the “highest price” expected. The CMS will take 7% of the price realised, the vendor 93% which will normally be paid no later than 6 weeks after the auction. The CMS will undertake to advertise the memorabilia for auction on its website no later than 3 weeks prior to the closing date of the auction. Bids will only be accepted from CMS members. Postal bids must be in writing or e-mail by the closing date and time shown above. Generally, no item will be sold below 10% of the lower estimate without reference to the vendor.. Thus, an item with a £10-15 estimate can be sold for £9, but not £8, without approval. The incremental scale for the acceptance of bids is as follows: £2 increments up to £20, then £20/22/25/28/30 up to £50, then £5 increments to £100 and £10 increments above that. So, if there are two postal bids at £25 and £30, the item will go to the higher bidder at £28. Should there be two identical bids, the first received will win. Bids submitted between increments will be accepted, thus a £52 bid will not be rounded either up or down. Items will be sent to successful postal bidders the week after the auction and will be sent by the cheapest rate commensurate with the value and size of the item.

They were emerging as title rivals to Ferguson’s Manchester United and he was keen for Morgan to move to Old Trafford. Morgan chose Blackburn, signing for the Ewood Park side in 1994. A year later, Blackburn won their one and only Premier League title. But despite training with the league-winning squad, and making the bench for league and European matches, Morgan found himself released – and without a club – almost three years later. It was only weeks before captaining the Ireland Under-20s to a third-place finish in the 1997 World Championships in Malaysia. Put simply, Morgan fell by the wayside as Blackburn – and their Premier League rivals – regularly shunned the promotion of youth in favour of big-money signings. FOOTBALL’S Contrary to what Sky might have you believe, football existed before 1992. In fact the 1980s saw cultural and political change that shaped the modern game. But while LOST football wasn’t cool, some of us still loved it. Jon Howe looks back with nostalgia DECADE at the decade that football forgot... A game you might have forgotten November 8, 1980 n Leeds United 0 Arsenal 5 While Leeds fans of the modern era have fresh memories of humiliating home defeats dished out by the football colossi of Blackpool, Watford, Nottingham Forest and Preston, such a public dishonouring on our own doorstep rarely occurred during the 1960s and ’70s, even as Revie’s great side began to break up and the club descended into that murky tunnel called “transition”. That all changed, of course, when the clock ticked over into the 1980s. The visit of Arsenal found Leeds slowly finding their feet after that legendary sniffer of all things loose in the penalty area, Allan Clarke, had taken over as manager. Leeds were struggling to find the net and Clarke shored up his defence before worrying Leeds manager Allan Clarke with his assistant Martin Wilkinson. about being too expansive Eddie at the other end. It was a his most productive season in an Arsenal shirt with 16 league Gray somewhat uncharacteristic appearances – picked at Leeds’ failings and executed a stance for one of the club’s stunning 5-0 win that left Elland Road dumbstruck. greatest goalscorers, but one Leeds were 2-0 down by half-time with young goalkeeper that few argued with.

Reverse sweeps make me shudder; KP’s attacks (when batting, that is) made me bewail the lack of a basic straight-bat technique and David Warner just makes me think – slogger! And so on. However, Brendon McCullum is another matter entirely. Watching New Zealand lose early wickets in their second Test against Australia and seeing the talented Kane Williamson inching to just three runs in over sixty deliveries was a painful experience until the world turned upside down. Having been beaten comprehensively by his first ball, Brendon McCullum sliced the next ball over the slips for four and then began to construct something of true wonder. With most bowlers going for barely one an over, Mitchell Marsh entered the attack and jaw-droppingly, saw his first over go for twenty one runs.
