  • Evolving Processes Fredy Studer
Fredy Studer Evolving Processes by Ken Micallef ollowing in the lineage of European drumming masters Pierre Favre and Han Bennink, Swiss-born Fredy Studer has deftly employed Ftouch, tone, texture, noise, and rhythm in service of highly drum- centric music that, regardless of its avant-garde nature, communicates a rare sense of sincerity and humanity. Active on the European avant-jazz and classical scenes since the late 1960s, Studer was a founding member of the influe tial, freewheeling fusion group OM, and has toured and tracked albums with such iconic musicians as Dave Holland, Miroslav Vitous, Joe Henderson, Rainer Brüninghaus, Markus Stockhausen, Charlie Mariano, George Gruntz, Franco Ambrosetti, and Christy Doran. Along the way, he’s ceaselessly explored out-rock, jazz, folk, psychedelia, blues, fusion, rhythm ’n’ blues, bebop, funk, contemporary classical, and open-improvisation terrain. Among the dozens of albums Studer has recorded are the landmark 1977 ECM release Percussion Profiles with Jack DeJohnette, Dom Um Romão, Pierre Favre, Dave Friedman, and George Gruntz, and Favre’s 1984 release Singing Drums, featuring Paul Motian and Naná Vasconcelos, both of which expanded the then-current rhythmic consciousness. Other projects featuring Studer and Favre are the Four in Time drum quartet, with Daniel Humair and Fritz Hauser, and the long-running Drum Orchestra duo. Along the way Studer has also interpreted the percussive masterworks of 20th-century classical composers Steve Reich, John Cage, and Edgard Varèse. Coinciding with his long-term consultancy with Paiste cymbals, Studer followed his own artistic muse, exploring unusual situations and challenging concepts in music, life, and drumming.

  • A Turn in the Road
A Turn in the Road A Turn in the Road, the collective trio of guitarist Christy Doran, bassist Heiri Känzig and drummer Gerry Hemingway is a project that emerged from Lucerne, Switzerland in the fall of 2011, where all three are actively involved in teaching and mentoring the next generation of musicians at the Hochshule Luzern Musik. Christy and Heiri have played together previously in a variety of musical settings dating back many years. One of those groupings was a trio with the gifted drummer Fabian Kuratli, which ended with his untimely passing in 2008. As a starting point this current trio celebrates Fabian Ku- ratli’s legacy with the Unit Record’s release of “Tribute to Fab”; a recently discovered trio recording with Christy, Heiri and Fabian made in 2002. A Turn in the Road continues further from this previous formation in new directions and fresh possibilities with the now Swiss based American drummer Gerry Hemingway. All three players are highly acknowledged composers and bandleaders who have refined their musical taste and improvisational sensibilities through years of diverse experience. The primary focus of this trio is on the art of listening as the majority of their content is completely improvised. These three instrumental virtuosos have a capacity to elegantly sculpture musical pieces from the wildest sound color tableaus to the hardest swing- ing and spirited interchanges that reflect the joy and intensity these players have always brought to their collaborative musical invention. Christy Doran - electric & acoustic guitar http://www.christydoran.ch Christy Doran was born in Dublin, Ireland and has lived in Lucerne, Switzerland since his childhood.

  • Jazz Rock Fusion Surviving Four Decades and Counting…
1 of 38 Jazz Rock Fusion Surviving Four Decades and Counting… By, Rick Calic www.jazzrockworld.com March 2006 Writing an article about Jazz Rock Fusion these days might seem as pointless as debating the benefits of Hi-Fi equipment with vacuum tubes vs. transistors to someone that uses an iPod. The only people that would care are older folks who even remember tubes and dedicated enthusiasts. On the other hand, while Jazz Rock Fusion might be older or seem equally pointless to many reading this article, there remains a large but scattered segment of the world’s population that sees the genre as a vibrant and legitimate art form. Sadly though, the musical perspective regarding Jazz Rock Fusion was narrow from the beginning and will probably always be that way. Jazz Rock Fusion, in terms of the entire world of music, constitutes just a tiny fraction of interest. Yet, if we accept this as fact, which most fans, musicians and certainly “big business” does, the generation of any interest at all is meritorious. In order to discuss the music with integrity, a ground rule needs to be established. This ground rule is required due to the unsolved, long lasting, and ongoing mysteries of the music and its unique identity. Mysteries such as: What is Jazz Rock Fusion? Who started Jazz Rock Fusion? What should it be called? And finally, with no major media support why is there still a market? So, what are the answers you ask? Quite simply these mysteries will remain mysteries. Answering the questions definitively will end up as trivial as the facts regarding the creation and development of the gut bucket.

June 2012 | No. 122 Your FREE Guide to the NYC Jazz Scene nycjazzrecord.com MILES DAVIS THE MAN WITH THE HORN CHARLIE • DARIUS • TERJE • POTLATCH • EVENT WATTS JONES RYPDAL RECORDS CALENDAR There are a few icons in jazz history who can be identified solely by a single name: Sonny, Trane, Ornette, Cecil and, perhaps most famous of all, Miles. The trumpeter (1926-99) was both an innovator and a household name (1959’s Kind of Blue is jazz’ New York@Night answer to Michael Jackson’s Thriller as album to be found in most record 4 collections). Much has been made of Davis’ many groups (who else has a first and second classic quintet?), his skill as a talent scout, even his gruff public persona Interview: Charlie Watts and indefatigable style. But lost in these discussions is an analysis of Miles Davis 6 by Sean O’Connell the musician and what he brought to the trumpet lineage in his nearly 50-year Artist Feature: Darius Jones career. On The Cover this month we speak with a number of Davis’ colleagues and stylistic heirs for their thoughts on Miles’ musical legacy. Tributes to Miles for 7 by Sharon Mizrahi what would have been his 86th birthday are at Smoke from late May through June.
