Candidate Statement As a public member of the NCC board, I would welcome the opportunity to be a part of the collaborative effort amongst healthcare professionals in improving the quality of healthcare in the midst of rapidly changing healthcare laws and practices. As an attorney specializing in healthcare law, wife of a Neonatologist, daughter of a Pulmonologist and nurse practitioner, and mother of a five year old, I bring to the table practical knowledge as well as an educated and unique perspective of the healthcare system. Progressive times call for a higher standard in regard to continuing medical education, licensure, and specialty certification. Candidate Statement I am writing to express my interest in a position on the Nominations Committee for the National Certification Corporation. I am a long term supporter of certification and its validation of nursing specialty knowledge. Certification has demonstrated benefits for patients, for employees and for the institutions which employ them. The process of recertification assures that nurses maintain their mastery and make continuous learning a life habit. It is important that the important charge of certification corporations be protected by a group of dedicated professionals with a wide range of not only clinical experience, but experience in education, quality and advocacy. I have been a long term advocate of maternal child nurses. My experience as a neonatal nurse, a manager of a labor and delivery unit, and my role as a Neonatal Nurse Practitioner (NNP) give me a unique understanding of the range of skills and knowledge needed to care for mothers and their infants. In addition to my clinical experience, I have accepted roles in professional organizations that have continued to widen my areas of experience. I am currently a member of the Council of Neonatal Nurse Practitioners, a part of the National Association of Neonatal Nurses (NANN). In that role, I chair a task force for the creation of quality metrics for the NNP and I work on the recruitment and retention task force. I also volunteer for the American Academy of Pediatrics and work on a taskforce attempting to assure risk appropriate care for every newborn. I believe these connections, experiences, and skills make be uniquely qualified for your Nominations Committee. I thank you for your consideration!
