Illinois’ defense was suffocating in the first half, holding the Anteaters to just six field goals and 23 percent shooting. The Illini led by as many as 28 points at 38-10 prior to intermission. While the Anteaters found more success offensively after the break, Illinois maintained its double-digit lead the entire second half. Illinois shot 50 percent for the game and 10 players entered the scoring column, as the Illini bench outscored UC Irvine 31-to-10. The Illini also blocked eight shots, with six different players recording a block. Brandon Paul was one of four Illini in double figures, scoring a season-high18 points on 6-of-8 three-point shooting. Demetri McCamey had 13 points and a game-high eight assists, while the frontcourt duo of Mike Tisdale and Mike Davis combined for 23 points and 16 rebounds. Tisdale had 12 points, eight rebounds and three blocked shots, while Davis finished with 11 points and eight boards.

Paul Shines in Openers For the second straight year, Brandon Paul excelled in a season opener. Last year, Paul set the Illini freshman scoring record in a debut with 22 points against Southern Illinois-Edwardsville, a scoring total that still stands as his career high. Paul was back at it again in this year’s opener vs. UC Irvine, leading the Illini in scoring with 18 points, a total that continues to stand as his season high. Paul made his first five shots, all 3-pointers, and ended up hitting 6-of-8 from beyond the arc on the night. Paul has now averaged 20.0 points on 61 percent shooting (14-23) and 71 three-point shooting (10-14) in two UI season openers.

McCamey Wooden and Naismith Award Candidate Demetri McCamey has been named a preseason candidate for the Wooden and Naismith Awards, one of 50 players selected to each watch list. McCamey earned first-team All-Big Ten honors last season. He led the Illini in scoring, averaging 15.1 points, and ranked second in the nation in assists with a school- record average of 7.1 apg.

Experienced Illini Illinois welcomes back all five starters and seven of its top eight leading scorers from last season. In fact, Illinois returns 89.4 percent of its points, 79 percent of its rebounds, and 85 percent of its minutes played from the 2009-10 campaign.

Busy Summer for the Orange and Blue There were a number of Illini players who benefited from national and international opportunities during the summer. Jereme Richmond was one of 12 members of the USA Basketball U18 National Team that won a gold medal at the 2010 FIBA Americas Championship in San Antonio in June. Richmond averaged 10.8 points and 5.8 rebounds and was second on the team with 14 assists while helping lead the United States to a perfect 5-0 record. Mike Tisdale had two opportunities with the USA Basketball Select Team, a group of collegiate players assembled to train against the U.S. Senior National Team. Tisdale was one of 20 players who practiced against Team USA in Las Vegas in July. He also was one of 10 players who competed again versus Team USA in New York City in August. Demetri McCamey served as a counselor and trained with other collegiate standouts at a pair of Nike camps, the Deron Williams Skills Academy in Chicago in June and the LeBron James Skills Academy in Akron, Ohio in July. Three Illini players took part in foreign tour trips. Joseph Bertrand traveled to Poland in June with Athletes in Action sports ministry. Brandon Paul and Tyler Griffey, meanwhile, traveled to Belgium and Germany with Global Sports Academy, a team coached by Illinois assistant Jay Price.

McCamey One of Nation’s Top Distributors Demetri McCamey ranked second in the nation in assists last season, setting an Illini single-season record with an average of 7.1 assists per game. He reached double figures in assists seven times, led by a career-high and school-record tying 16-assist performance at Purdue.

Davis Wins Rebounding Title Mike Davis was the top rebounder in the Big Ten last season, averaging 9.2 rpg. He became the first Illini player since 1987 to lead the conference in rebounding, and his season total of 330 rebounds ranked third on the Illinois single-season list. Davis leads all active Big Ten players with 24 career double-doubles. He recorded 15 double-doubles last season, second in the league behind Ohio State’s , and had nine double-doubles as a sophomore.

Richardson Named Big Ten’s Best Freshman D.J. Richardson earned Big Ten Freshman of the Year honors by the league coaches last season. Richardson started 35 games as a rookie, the most starts by a freshman in Illini history. He was fourth on the team in scoring, averaging 10.5 points, and led the Illini in 3-point shooting at 39 percent. Richardson made 69 treys on the year, the second-highest single-season total by a UI freshman.

Illini Preseason Player Headlines • Illinois returns all five starters, its top five scorers, and seven of its top eight leading scorers from a year ago. • Senior Demetri McCamey is the Illini’s leading returning scorer. The first-team All-Big Ten and NABC and USBWA All-District selection averaged 15.1 points, becoming just the second Illini player in Coach Bruce Weber’s tenure to average 15+ points. • In addition to his scoring, McCamey excelled in distributing the basketball. He finished second in the NCAA in assists with a school-record average of 7.1 apg. • Senior Mike Tisdale was second on the team in scoring and rebounding last season, averaging 11.9 points and 6.0 boards. He led the Big Ten in field goal shooting at 58.5 percent and ranked second in the league in free throw shooting at 83.9 percent. Tisdale also totaled 59 blocked shots, the second-highest single-season total in school history. • Senior Mike Davis was the UI’s third-leading scorer, averaging 10.7 points, and led the Big Ten in rebounding with an average of 9.2 boards to become the first Illini player in 23 years to top the conference in rebounding. Davis tallied 15 double-doubles on the season, ranking second in the league. • Sophomore D.J. Richardson earned Big Ten Freshman of the Year honors, ranking fourth on the team in scoring with an average of 10.5 points.
