AWARDS Miharo: The Miharo is a daily award chosen by the children for the child who is an outstanding role model during the day in the areas of achievement, courtesy, cooperation, collaboration, respect, responsibility and fair play. The recipients of this award for the last week are: Fletcher Sanders, Kate Inch, Ella Inch and Kumo Palmer Kia ora whanau Thank you again to Kane, who has been busy with the wasp eradication again, and Campbell getting the playground climbing net replacement underway. And Natasha, a huge big thank you too, the grounds are looking awesome.

I would also like to congratulate Rachel and Isabella for representing us and putting in a great effort at the Swimming Sports in Westport last Friday – thanks parents. And continuing the sporting theme, congratulations too, Fletcher, Clara, Isabella and Rachel (And your parents) for making the trip up to Nelson and representing the school at the Weet-bix Tryathlon on Sunday. It was an awesome effort from you all. BOARD OF TRUSTEES At last night’s continuation of the Board of Trustees meeting we had a close look at the 2018 Analysis of Variance and Annual Report. This will be available to parents for reading at the school office or I can email you a copy if you would like one. The analysis of curriculum data shows a clear correlation between children’s learning and their attendance with most children identified at risk of not achieving to expected levels also having less than 90% attendance in 2018. The Board has agreed to continue our focus on achievement in Reading, Writing and Mathematics in 2019 but has also agreed that it is vitally important that we focus our energy on student/family well-being including issues such as attendance and transience. Curriculum renewal, particularly in relation to the Digital Learning Curriculum will also be part of that focus, along with an effort to include opportunities for children to experience aspects of the curriculum that we do not always have the specialist skills to deliver e.g. Science. These areas of focus also largely align with the Kahui Ako vision and likely goals.

REEFTON TASTER: This event is confirmed for tomorrow 7 March. We will be leaving school at 9:00 am as soon as the Frog Flat Bus returns to school. We will be at Reefton Area School for most of the day but should be back at school around 2:30pm. If there is any change to that I will let you know by text. The children will be doing the following activities: 10:00 a.m. Bee Bots with Raquel Busson - Library 11:00 a.m. Duffy's Theatre Hall " Stuck in the Game" followed by lunch break. Enviro Schools Tour / Set up for kowhai project. 12:30 p.m. Science with Vincent Arnull - Science Lab 1:30 Finish The Enviro Schools Tour is an opportunity for our children to look at the projects being completed by Reefton Area School students with a view to sharing some project ideas that will include a visit here to learn more about our kowhai project. The children will need to bring all their usual lunchbox and clothing items as well as a water bottle. They should also wear closed shoes to keep their feet safe in the Science Lab. We will be using the bus but would welcome a couple of parents to come along with us. Mrs Hampton and Karen will be travelling over. Please do not send $5.00 for transport at this stage.

CLASSROOM HAPPENINGS Over the last week we have been wrapping up some activities related to Camp-over and our Treaty of Waitangi learning. We have also started some PAT assessments this week, completing Maths yesterday. We have a Listening Comprehension and a STAR reading assessment to do. These are all standardised assessments which enable us to make judgements about children’s progress and achievement in relation to the New Zealand Curriculum as well as identify next steps for learning in those curriculum areas. Over the next week, as well as completing these assessments, we have the Taster Day in Reefton tomorrow, a return to our focus titled “Awesome Me” and a small change in days for Mrs Thomson. Mrs Thomson will be here Monday and Friday next week as I am in Nelson on Monday (I will be able to be contacted) and on Friday next week I will be attending a Kahui Ako meeting all day in Murchison where we will be confirming our vision and setting some goals for the year ahead. FROM REAP: Next Monday 11 March Matt Frost will be in Westport presenting for parents, professionals and interested community members a session on autism, dyslexia, ADHD and inclusion. Matt works with the Ministry of Education and is on the spectrum himself so speaks from personal experience. Take care and enjoy the next week.

Nga manaakitanga/With best wishes
