Scientific Leadership Profile In the late 90s I pioneered hard X-ray surveys using BeppoSAX data and performed the first spectroscopic identification of type 2 QSOs. We promptly extended this work to the new Chandra and XMM-Newton data, confirmed the ‘downsizing’ in the AGN evolution including obscured objects and discovering significant correlation between the fraction of obscured AGN and their luminosity and redshift. I pushed studies of normal AGN to high redshift by adopting new powerful methods to search for and characterize X-ray emission from infrared selected galaxies. On 2009 with Roberto Maiolino and Chiara Feruglio we ideated and pioneered new (sub)mm interferometry studies to probe AGN driven, massive molecular outflows. This experiment was extremely successful, opening a brand new field, on which my team is today leader on both observational (SUPER, WISSH and IBISCO surveys) and theoretical (AGN /outflow 2D models) efforts. On GRB studies, I participated to the discovery of X-ray afterglows from a GRB with BeppoSAX, and to the successive wave of observations prompted by the GRB redshift identification. I was the first to use high-resolution spectroscopy (VLT/UVES) to study the properties of the gas along the line of sight to GRBs, opening a brand new scientific field. On 2016 I suggested that nano- could be profitably used to observe and localize GRBs. This led to the ideation and then realization of the HERMES pathfinder project, for the realization of a mini-constellation of six cubesat. The project was funded by the Italian Space Agency and by the European Commission in 2018, and should see the constellation in orbit by 2022. This in-orbit demonstration can pave the way to a new approach on space research: quick development time, limited cost, modularity to avoid single point failures and improve both quantitatively and qualitatively the hardware along the years. Scientific production I have co-authored so far > 385 publications on international peer reviewed professional journals which have produced nearly 23.000 citations, H index = 81. International recognition and diffusion. In the last 10 years I gave a invited lectures and seminars on AGN, surveys and GRBs in many prestigious institutions including the MPE, ESO, CEA Paris, IPAG Grenoble, Observatoire de Paris, Tubingen University, Caltech, Harvard-Smithsonian CfA, in addition to many Italian Universities and Observatories. Prizes, awards, academy memberships 1998 Bruno Rossi Prize of the High Energy Division of the American Astronomical Society to the BeppoSAX team for the discovery of the Bursts afterglows in the X-ray band Outreach I regularly give seminars for a general public, an average of three/four times per year. I write about science and astrophysics on my blog www.lascienzainutile.it
