Using Forms, Reports and OCA to Access ODBC Data Sources Using Oracle® Forms Developer, Oracle® Reports Developer and the Oracle Open Client Adapter to access ODBC Data sources Overview The Oracle Open Client Adapter for ODBC (OCA) allows Forms Developer and Reports Developer on Microsoft Windows 95 and Windows NT to access ODBC-compliant data sources through ODBC drivers. Using the Oracle Open Client Adapter, an application can access different data sources in a consistent manner. This allows an application developer to build an application that can run unmodified against one of several databases. Alternatively, the application can be targeted at a specific database, and take advantage of features particular to that system. This document explains how to build Forms Developer and Reports Developer applications that access data stored in ODBC data sources. The first chapter, Getting Started, gives general guidelines that apply to any ODBC data source. The second chapter, "Building Oracle Forms Developer and Oracle Reports Developer Applications for ODBC Data Sources", gives instructions for building applications that can access any ODBC data source. For additional information about specific ODBC data sources please refer to the database-specific information chapters. The absence of a specific chapter for a given database does not mean we do not support ODBC access of that database using the OCA. There are a limited number of databases we can test and document, but the OCA should work with any ODBC data source, provided the ODBC driver is compliant with ODBC version 2.0 or above. How To Use This Document This document is meant to assist you in using the Oracle Open Client Adapter. The document is divided into chapters on certain areas, but you should be able to start using the OCA just by reading the first two chapters: "Getting Started" and "Building Oracle Forms Developer and Oracle Reports Developer Applications for ODBC Data Sources". 1 Several issues concerning usage of the OCA are discussed in the appendices of this document because they deal with situations many users will not meet. 2 Table of Contents 1. The API consists of a set of methods and attributes for communicating with database servers and accessing databases from Perl scripts. The appendix also describes MySQL-specific extensions to DBI provided by DBD::mysql, the MySQL database driver. I assume here a minimum version of DBI 1.50, although most of the material applies to earlier versions as well. DBI 1.50 requires at least Perl 5.6.0 (with 5.6.1 preferred). As of DBI 1.611, the minimum Perl version is 5.8.1. I also assume a minimum version of DBD::mysql 4.00. Finally, they are actively pursuing vendors who will provide superior technical support and a richer customer experience. And, subsequently, enterprises are looking for a solution that will complement their existing infrastructure and skills. The traditional database vendors have been unable to provide the combination of all three benefits. While Microsoft SQL ServerTM and IBM DB2TM may provide the flexibility and rich customer experience, they cannot significantly reduce TCO. Open source databases, on the other hand, can provide the TCO benefits and the flexibility. However, these open source databases either lack the enterprise-class features that today’s mission critical applications require or they are not equipped to provide the enterprise-class support required by these organizations. Finally, none of the databases mentioned above provide the database compatibility and interoperability that complements their existing applications and staff. The fear of the costs of changing databases, including costs related to application re-coding and personnel re-training, outweigh the expected savings and, therefore, these enterprises remain paralyzed and locked into Oracle.

    Using Proc SQL and ODBC to Manage Data outside of SAS® Jeff Magouirk, National Jewish Medical and Research Center, Denver, Colorado ABSTRACT The ability to use Proc SQL and ODBC to manage data outside of SAS is another feature in SAS’s toolbox that programmers use to accomplish many different tasks. The idea of pulling data from sources outside of SAS is behind both of these tools. A key benefit of using ODBC and to a certain amount Proc SQL is the reduction in coding that is written. Another positive aspect of using Proc SQL and ODBC is the ability to manage data across a network. At National Jewish Medical & Research Center ODBC and Proc SQL are used to manage and pull end users data across networks so users can examine their data quickly and efficiently. Since end users can have almost real time access to the collected data it is especially useful for checking the accuracy of the data from patient health studies and clinical trials. Error checks and data handling are done first as the data is collected and put into data tables with SAS and then outputted either with an ODBC connection or Proc SQL. The purpose of this paper is to show users how to set up an ODBC connection, compare the reduction in code when an ODBC is set up and how to use Proc SQL to manage data outside of SAS.     iSeries SQL Programming: You’ve Got the Power! By Thibault Dambrine On June 6, 1970, Dr. E. F. Codd, an IBM research employee, published "A Relational Model of Data for Large Shared Data Banks," in the Association of Computer Machinery (ACM) journal, Communications of the ACM. This landmark paper still to this day defines the relational database model. The language, Structured English Query Language (known as SEQUEL) was first developed by IBM Corporation, Inc. using Codd's model. SEQUEL later became SQL. Ironically, IBM was not first to bring the first commercial implementation of SQL to market. In 1979, Relational Software, Inc. was, introducing an SQL product named "Oracle". SQL is the ONLY way to access data on Oracle database systems. The ONLY way to access data on Microsoft SQL Server and I could repeat this sentence with a number of other commercial database products. On the iSeries however, SQL is NOT the only way to access the data. SQL support has only started with V1R1. At that time, AS/400 SQL performance was a problem – a big turnoff for any developer. Because of these facts, many iSeries developers still consider SQL as an optional skill. Many still use SQL only as an advanced data viewer utility, in effect, ranking SQL somewhere north of DSPPFM. Today, one can barely get by anymore as a programmer without knowing SQL. The same is true for all commercial database systems. They all support SQL. The iSeries is no different. It has evolved to compete.
