A great opportunity and a first for any MA. The team won three games and lost five.

Future at Eden Park. Whilst there remains some media interest in a possible move to Western Springs, Auckland Cricket is committed to ensuring it protects its interests at Eden Park.

CITH update. This year Auckland Cricket will invest $610k into its 14 Principal Clubs and 2 Community Clubs. This is an increase of 160k over the past three seasons.

The idea of the programme is to invest in clubs, so they in turn can invest in management and development with the goal that each club has a consistency of administration through which they can develop the sport in their local community.

Whilst we invest in a management solution in each club, ACA acknowledges that clubs cannot function without the countless hours donated by Boards, Committees, mums and dads and Volunteers within your club. Please accept our sincere thanks for all that each of you do to make each weekend so successful and a great experience for players at all levels.

Playing Numbers. Overall playing numbers have risen again this year, almost principally due to the success of in-class primary school sessions being run throughout Auckland, but the real story is one of concern, particularly with regard to club midget players; club junior players and secondary school numbers.

But first the successes ….

Primary School Programme – over 15,000 primary school children were part of an in-class cricket programme which lasted for at least four weeks. This is an increase from 11,500 last year.

Girls – 30% growth in the last five years. Encouragingly Youth girls’ team numbers have tripled in the last five years as we try to retain as many girls as possible from junior to junior cricket.

Adults It’s worth noting initially that more teams (261) are played in either mid-week twilight cricket or ‘festival type’ Sunday cricket compared with traditional Saturday cricket (222).

3 This is not to say that senior numbers have dropped - they haven’t - there are 222 teams compared to 216 last year and 213 the previous year. It’s simply a case of growth in club based twilight and Sunday. The success is that twilight numbers have risen whilst not impacting on club adult numbers.

Areas of concern

Midget numbers (school years 1-4) have decreased 12% in the last 5 years Junior numbers (years 5-8) have decreased 20% in the last 5 years. Secondary schools playing numbers have decreased 20% in the last five years

So what are we doing about it? Revamp of the Club is the Hub Programme- the Service Levels Agreement that will be used this year for the first time look to detail ‘best practice’ for clubs around processes and targets.

A new initiative - Cricket Blitz - is being introduced in term 1 2015. This is a Region wide after school competition – never tried before on a regional level within Auckland. Target 160 teams in year1. There are four competitions covering teams from years 5/6 mixed; years 7/8 boys; years 7/8 girls; years 11+ boys. Fast; regional; everyone bats and bowls’ aimed at social to semi-serious player. Viewed by Auckland Cricket as our biggest development initiative since Club is the Hub programme began twelve years ago.

Umpires Last season 59 different umpires stood in at least 1 game of Premier, Reserve or Premier A schools cricket. This was up from 40 different umpires from the previous year. This led to an increase in standing days from 720 to 936. The goal is to provide enough umpires to cover Premier Men and Women, Premier Reserve and Secondary School Premier A within 2-4 years. To do this we need to be able to cover approx. 1250 standing days.

Grounds The Auckland Cricket Regional Facilities Plan was published in 2011 and over the past 12 months Auckland Cricket has made great progress in the achievement of the plans key objectives. The region has seen a raft of new facilities come online including new turf at Orakei Domain (x1) and Barry Curtis Park (x2) and new artificial wickets installed at Western Springs outer oval, Mt Wellington War Memorial Park and Pt. England Reserve. A major achievement this year will be the completion of an Auckland Cricket Facilities Register in June 2014. This is a complete audit of all cricket wickets in the region (including schools). It records the condition, boundary size and categorises each wicket into to three clear grades Senior (min. 50m boundary), Junior (min. 40m boundary) or Midget wickets (<40m boundary). Competition management system and live scoring Last season we moved our competition management system to CricHQ. Auckland Cricket have committed to supporting this system until the end of next season at which point the agreement between NZC and CricHQ is up for renewal. The system has had its s challenges and we hope this summer we will see a significant improvement on what is delivered to clubs.

District/Club There is a change of format to Boys District Cricket tournaments next year. There are now separate competitions for each school year - from year 7 and year 11 - plus a combined year 12/13 competition. Teams are based on school years as opposed to e.g. U16 or U18.

Each district is entitled to one team per competition and further teams are considered on application based on the districts relative strength. As a rule of thumb, the older the boys, the more difficult it will be to have more than a single team in the competition.

4

Girls District cricket remains the same.

Overall cricket in Auckland Cricket is in good health and we would especially like to thank each club for the of cricket into the community within Auckland.

Questions to ACA: 1. What is the plan for club cricket? Looking like all club cricket will be moved to Sundays when there is world cup game on. 2. What is happening to Colin Maiden Park? The council has now purchased that park and will stay a sporting ground. 3. What is the plan with the Eden Park Outer oval? ACA has been based there 100 years and they board are looking to stay strong. 4. With the increase in umpires, how has this been done, they are more than welcome to approach clubs, as we have not heard anything? ACA is now looking after the umpires association, and increasing the hours on it per week. 5. What is the prospect of premier women getting umpires? Desire is yes, there is a ranking system, but are looking to cover women premiers, but will depend on numbers. 6. There has been a lot of change in staff at ACA over the last few years especially with Coaching and high performance, what is the plan? There is a new HP Manager and has restricted the programmes, to look at working at individuals and player pathways, and has brought in coaching mentor, talent ID. Club Development Officers are still going around the schools, ACA are looking at getting 8 more CDO’s. 7. Is there any chance premier cricket will start a week or two later? Doesn’t look like it anytime soon, but is in the 10 year plan to look at that, but comes down to facilities.
