St. Martin's Press to Publish New Book by Michael ST. MARTIN’S PRESS TO PUBLISH NEW BOOK BY MICHAEL BLOOMBERG AND CARL POPE ON CLIMATE CHANGE OVERHEATED How Cooler Heads Can Cool the World New York, NY, October 26, 2016 – St. Martin’s Press announced today that Michael R. Bloomberg, businessman, philanthropist, UN Special Envoy for Cities and Climate Change and three-term mayor of New York City, has teamed with Carl Pope, former Executive Director and Chairman of the Sierra Club, to write a new book on climate change entitled, OVERHEATED: How Cooler Heads Can Cool the World. World publishing rights were acquired by SMP President and Publisher Sally Richardson and Executive Editor Jennifer Weis. The book will be published on April 18, 2017 and will be available in hardcover, ebook and audio editions. Bloomberg and Pope were inspired to write this book to reset the conversation about climate change—to take out the partisan rhetoric and hyperbole on both sides of the issue —and to offer a true understanding of the risks we face along with viable, concrete solutions. Doom-and-gloom warnings from the left are just as counterproductive as those from the right dismissing climate change with a “not to worry” attitude. The reality, according to Bloomberg and Pope, is that everyone is at risk from the impacts of climate change— but that taking action is also the best way to drive economic growth, save lives, and raise living standards around the world. “We are writing this book because we believe that it’s time for a new type of conversation about climate change,” say the authors, “one focused on the immediate economic and health benefits of climate action, which are too often lost in a sea of hyperbole and partisanship. By lowering the temperature of the debate, we can raise the bar for what we can accomplish. Cooler heads can produce a cooler world.” Bloomberg and Pope make plain exactly why climate change matters to everyday people, cities, and businesses. Their approach is to treat the changing climate as a series of discreet, manageable problems that should be attacked from all angles, each with a solution that can make our society healthier and our economy stronger. They explain how and why taking actions on climate change can reduce the number of children who have asthma attacks, save thousands of Americans from dying of respiratory disease, cut energy bills, increase the security of our energy supply, improve transportation, increase the number of jobs in communities—all while increasing the long-term stability of the global climate. Despite their very different backgrounds and perspectives, Bloomberg and Pope are approaching the challenge of climate change from the same side. “We don’t agree on every point,” they say. “But we share a strong sense of responsibility for taking on this fight, and a deep sense of optimism that we can win it. This book is our effort to convince more people—of equally diverse backgrounds, and of all political persuasions—to join us.” Michael R. Bloomberg is founder of Bloomberg LP, philanthropist, UN Secretary- General’s Special Envoy for Cities and Climate Change, and three-term mayor of New York City. The technology startup he launched in 1981 to provide real-time data and analysis to the financial services industry has grown into a global company that now employs nearly 20,000 people in 73 countries. He led the company for 20 years before running for office in 2001, and since leaving City Hall in 2014, has resumed leadership of Bloomberg LP. A passionate supporter of action on climate change, Mike Bloomberg is involved in multiple climate efforts, including partnering with the Sierra Club’s Beyond Coal Campaign, which aims to close half of America’s coal-powered energy production, and supporting state efforts to transition to renewable energy sources. Bloomberg has been at the forefront of involving the financial community in climate change, serving as Chair of the Sustainability Accounting Standards Board, the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures, and co-founder of the Risky Business Project. As Mayor of New York, Bloomberg reduced the city’s carbon footprint by nearly 20 percent. As a philanthropist, the bulk of Bloomberg’s climate change efforts are focused on cities. In 2014, Bloomberg was appointed to be the UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for Cities and Climate Change, and went on to create the Compact of Mayors (now the Global Covenant of Mayors). The Covenant, as well as the C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group, of which Bloomberg is president, are both networks of cities committed to meeting ambitious climate-related goals and assessing their progress using common measurements. A veteran leader in the environmental movement, Carl Pope is the former Executive Director and Chairman of the Sierra Club. He’s now the principal advisor at Inside Straight Strategies, looking for the underlying economics that link sustainability and economic development. He serves as a Senior Climate Advisor to former NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg. He was a founder of the Blue-Green Alliance and America Votes. He has served on the Boards of Ceres, the California League of Conservation Voters, As You Sow, the National Clean Air Coalition, and California Common Cause. He is currently a member of the US-India Track II Climate Diplomacy project of the Aspen Institute. He writes regularly for Bloomberg View and Huffington Post. Mr. Pope is also the author or co-author of three books: Sahib, An American Misadventure in India; Hazardous Waste In America and Strategic Ignorance: Why the Bush Administration Is Recklessly Destroying a Century of Environmental Progress, which the New York Review of Books called “a splendidly fierce book.” ### Macmillan Publishers is a global trade book publishing company with prominent imprints around the world. • August 1, 2019 Mr. John Sargent, Chief Executive Officer Macmillan Publishers 120 Broadway Street New York, NY 10271
50 E. Huron, Chicago, IL 60611 August 1, 2019 Mr. John Sargent, Chief Executive Officer Macmillan Publishers 120 Broadway Street New York, NY 10271 Dear Mr. Sargent, On behalf of the 9,000 members of the Public Library Association (PLA), our nation’s largest association for public library professionals, we are writing to object to and ask Macmillan Publishers to reconsider its plan to embargo new eBook titles for U.S. public libraries starting November 1. Under this new model, we understand a public library may purchase only a single copy of each new title in eBook format upon release, after which Macmillan will impose an eight-week embargo on additional eBook sales of that title. To public libraries and the millions of people who rely on them every day, Macmillan’s new policy is patently unacceptable. The central mission of libraries is to ensure equitable access to information for all people, regardless of format. Macmillan’s new eBook lending policy will limit access to new titles by the readers who depend most on libraries. In a recent interview, you likened this embargo to delaying release of paperback titles to maximize hardcover sales, but in that case public libraries are able to purchase and lend the books at the same time our readers are seeking them. Access to eBooks through public libraries should not be denied or delayed. PLA and its parent organization the American Library Association, will explore all possible avenues to ensure that libraries can do our jobs of providing access to information for all, without arbitrary limitations that undermine libraries’ ability to serve our communities.

  • The End of All Things Took Me Longer to Write Than Most of My Books Do, in Part Because I Had a Number of False Starts
AN ALTERNATE “THE LIFE OF THE MIND” Deleted and Alternate Scenes ■■ ■■ 039-61734_ch01_4P.indd 351 06/09/15 6:17 am Introduction The End of All Things took me longer to write than most of my books do, in part because I had a number of false starts. These false starts weren’t bad—in my opinion— and they were use- ful in helping me fi gure out what was best for the book; for ex- ample, determining which point- of- view characters I wanted to have, whether the story should be in fi rst or third person, and so on. But at the same time it’s annoying to write a bunch of stuff and then go Yeaaaaah, that’s not it. So it goes. Through vari ous false starts and diversions, I ended up writ- ing nearly 40,000 words— almost an entire short novel!—of material that I didn’t directly use. Some of it was re cast and repurposed in different directions, and a lot of it was simply left to the side. The thing is when I throw something out of a book, I don’t just delete it. I put it into an “excise fi le” and keep it just in case it’ll come in handy later. Like now: I’ve taken vari ous bits from the excise fi le and with them have crafted a fi rst chapter of an alternate version of The Life of the Mind, the fi rst novella of The End of All Things. This version (roughly) covers the same events, with (roughly) the same characters, but with a substantially different narrative di- rection.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Media Contact: Saraciea Fennell, Publicity Manager, Tor Teen [email protected] TOR TEEN ACQUIRES YA CONTEMPORARY FANTASY TRILOGY FROM DEBUT BLACK AUTHOR, TERRY J. BENTON IN MID-SIX FIGURE DEAL NEW YORK, NY (December 3, 2020)—Tor Teen, the publisher of A Song Below Water and The Witchlands series, has acquired, in a major deal, Blood Debts, a YA contemporary fantasy trilogy by Terry J. Benton, pitched as “Dynasty with magic” set to publish in Winter 2023. The book follows two Black twins, sixteen year-old Clem and Cristina, who must put aside their differences and reunite their fractured family in order to take back the New Orleans magic council their family used to rule—all while solving a decades-old murder that sparked the rising tensions between the city’s magical and non-magical communities, before it leads to an all-out war. Tor Teen Senior Editor Ali Fisher said, “Reading Blood Debts was like binge-watching my new favorite show. I gasped, I laughed, I completely fell in love. Benton is a powerhouse new voice in YA fantasy and the relationship between race, magic, and power is fresh and observant. I was on the edge of my seat to see who'd claim the throne!” Benton's agent, Patrice Caldwell, praises the hole the book fills in the market: “I can’t think of the last YA contemporary fantasy I’ve read written by a gay, Black man, centering a gay, Black boy. I can’t wait for this book to be out in the world!” Patrice Caldwell at New Leaf Literary & Media negotiated the three book deal for North American rights.

  • New Religious Movements
New Religious Movements New Religious Movements: Challenge and response is a searching and wide-ranging collection of essays on the contemporary phenomenon of new religions. The contributors to this volume are all established specialists in the sociology, theology, law, or the history of new minority movements. The primary focus is the response of the basic institutions of society to the challenge which new religious movements represent. The orientation of this volume is to examine the way in which new movements in general have affected modern society in areas such as economic organisation; the operation of the law; the role of the media; the relationship of so-called ‘cult’ membership to mental health; and the part which women have played in leading or supporting new movements. Specific instances of these relationships are illustrated by reference to many of the most prominent new religions – Hare Krishna, The Brahma Kumaris, The Unification Church, The Jesus Army, The Family’, The Church of Scientology, and Wicca. For students of religion or sociology, New Religious Movements is an invaluable source of information, an example of penetrating analysis, and a series of thought-provoking contributions to a debate which affects many areas of contemporary life in many parts of the world. Contributors: Eileen Barker, James Beckford, Anthony Bradney, Colin Campbell, George Chryssides, Peter Clarke, Paul Heelas, Massimo Introvigne, Lawrence Lilliston, Gordon Melton, Elizabeth Puttick, Gary Shepherd, Colin Slee, Frank Usarski, Bryan Wilson.
