Federation’s 2004 Annual Campaign

A person-to-person, volunteer-based organization, Federation depends on gifts from the heart. Every coin dropped into a tzedakah box, every phone solicitation on Super Sunday, every effort to support Federation’s Annual Campaign has the power to make a difference. The work of Federation’s Annual Campaign is never done. Thanks to the hundreds of volunteers who step up to the challenge each year, our Federation has a long tradition of communal giving, ranking fourth in the U.S. for dollars raised. With co-chairs Marta Rosenthal and Michael Horowitz at the helm of the Campaign this year, our community raised nearly $35 million, including a $4 million achievement for the Jane and Larry Sherman Family Challenge Fund in honor of Max M. Fisher’s 95th Birthday. The Challenge Fund was established by the Meet the Sherman Family,Federation’s 2004 Annual Campaign Challenge Fund donors. Seated from left to generosity of the Sherman family with their children right: Larry and Jane Sherman, Sylvia and Randy Wolf;standing from left to right: Robbie and Scott Sherman, Ellen and David Sherman. To give of oneself is ultimately a benefit with immeasurable payback.

Highlights of Federation’s 2004 Annual Campaign Moving Super Sunday on the calendar to the traditional month of giving, Federation declared December Mitzvah Month, kicking off the Campaign on the first weekend in December with a Super Sunday phonathon, extended to Monday and Tuesday evenings as well. Representing all streams of the community, promoting our agencies, schools and synagogues, hundreds of ©2004 UJC volunteers united, to make calls, raising nearly $1 million. Thousands of Israelis in need, like this man, enjoy healthy meals thanks to the work we do here at Federation. 5

Together. Answering the Call to Action

Women at Work. The power of women’s philanthropy at work in the community annually accounts for nearly 20% of the dollars raised. Federation’s Women’s Campaign Pomegranate, Ruby and Lion of Judah events, involving a total of nearly 500 women raised over $4.2 million. In appreciation. Federation hosted an evening in May with Anti-Defamation League director Abraham Foxman, recognizing donors. Nearly 500 attended.

Saving the day: hundreds of volunteers joined forces to make calls on Super Sunday. Shown: l to r: Karen Alpiner, Jill Menuck, and David Goodman. No matter how small or large, every gift is important. It represents a decision. A vote. Smaller gifts can often be the catalysts for larger ones. Together our actions have a significance they would not have individually.

Federation’s Miracle Mission 4

Can Federation work miracles? Ask anyone who’s been to Israel on a Federation Michigan Miracle Mission. Representing a microcosm of our community, and the largest U.S. Jewish group to visit Israel in 2004, the Miracle Mission brought hope, high spirits and the good will of nearly 600 travelers to Israel for ten days in April. Participants were treated to first-class tours and accom- modations in Jerusalem, home hospitality in Michigan’s Partnership 2000 region of the Central Galilee, and rare opportunities to meet Israelis from all walks of life, from the highest ranks of government to new olim (émigrés).

Our mission isn’t just a “statement” for the purpose of describing what we do in a brochure. It’s a living contract — a pledge we renew each year — to energize our community and to mobilize its resources on behalf of Jewish people living everywhere.

No city in the U.S. does missions quite like ours. The fourth “mega-community” trip organized by Federation, Michigan’s “trademark” Miracle Missions have now brought the total number of participants to 3,450 during the past decade, more than any other city in the U.S.

Federation’s Michigan Miracle Mission 4, ten days, non-stop in Israel. We’ll always carry with us the memories: Doreen Hermelin’s salami send-off before boarding, former Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s address at the Hebrew University,Rabbi Berel Wein on the Promenade, Kabbalat Shabbat at the Western Wall, the hospitality of our Partnership 2000 family in the Central Galilee, the sound of the siren on Yom Hazikaron, the celebration on Yom Ha’Atzmaut.Am Yisrael chai! Israel lives! 7

Together. On a Miracle Mission

On the wings of the Miracle Mission, three missions followed, with 36 participants in the Grosfeld Leadership Program III Mission, 105 young people traveling on the Teen Mission, 23 participating on the Young Adult Division (YAD) Summer Mission, and 60 educators completing the curriculum of Federation’s Judaic Early Education Enrichment Project with the “J.E.E.E.P” trip. And what better community response to the recent mission experiences than to launch Federation’s newest initiative. Plans are now underway for Federation’s first Family Miracle Mission, set to go in December 2005.

Those who participated in Federation’s Miracle Mission came home with wonderful memories and a strong desire to share that experience with their families. Bringing the family is the ultimate statement that being in Israel is not only safe, it's life-affirming, and an essential thing to do as a community. 8

Our year together

Federation is as near as your phone, and as far-reaching as you can imagine. Our work is as complex as it is comprehensive. We are part of the network of one of the most effective and trusted philanthropies in the world, working around the globe to deliver help, hope and comfort to those in harm’s way, and to honor and celebrate our ancient tradition. Our Federation continues to expand and improve its vital work because people like you care enough to connect. For the hundreds of ways to connect and become involved in our Jewish community, there are doors open to you at Federation. All are welcome.Visit anytime online at www.thisisfederation.org or call (248) 642-4260.

Mitzvah Day. It is rare that a Federation program continues to draw the kind of participation that Mitzvah Day does annually. For those who join us on December 25, the experience of volunteering in the community is most rewarding. Once again this year, almost 900 people came through to serve meals, distribute gifts, and spread cheer in dozens of social service agencies throughout southeast Michigan. There was wide media coverage with showings on the evening news on FOX 2 and Channel 7.

A Federation first and prime example of community action working at its best: with the help of Representative Marc Schulman, (R-W. Bloomfield) Federation secured a $500,000 appropriation from the state for the purpose of funding services to those with special needs.

Expanding our services and facilities to care for older adults with dementia and other memory disorders, construction was completed on the Dorothy and Peter D. Brown Memory Pavilion, a state-of-the-art program for 30 residents on the third floor of the Edward I. and Freda Fleischman Residence/Blumberg Plaza. With thanks to the Mondry family, the administrative staff of Jewish Apartments & Services now has a home of their own, in the new David and Miriam Mondry Administrative Office Building on the A. Alfred Taubman Jewish Community Campus in Oak Park. With this construction, space for programming activities has been returned to residents. Breaking ground, taking our Jewish Family Service to a new level of service across from the Eugene and Marcia Applebaum Jewish Community Campus, the new Jewish Family Service facility is scheduled to open soon, bearing the name of its generous donor family Graham and Sally Orley and Joseph and Suzanne Orley.

Millennium Campaign for Detroit’s Jewish Future

Initiated in 1998 by the Jewish Federation and the United Jewish Foundation of Metropolitan Detroit, the Millennium Campaign for Detroit's Jewish Future was established to enhance Jewish life in Detroit with a twofold goal. One: to promote Jewish education, congregational programming, culture and arts, identity and contunity for generations to come. Two: to redevelop, renew and transform the Jewish Community Center, building a true “center” of Jewish life for the entire community.
