Album Review: Darwin Deez’ “Darwin Deez” He’s weird, he’s abstract, but he’s ridiculously talented. The Brooklynite Darwin Deez’s 2010 self-titled release may only spin for 33 minutes, but it is laced with indie-pop joy. Using the essentials in any veteran’s bag of tricks, Darwin Deez brings out hand claps, trebly Stratocasters, and a book of sardonic songs to craft the catchiest of the catchy albums as of late. Already climbing its way up the UK Albums Chart, Darwin Deez is worthy of all of the attention. On the single, “Constellations,” Deez demonstrates parallels to The Strokes with his baritone voice; he is easily comparable to Julian Casablancas. This opener prepares you for a somber record, but it certainly is not a reflection of what’s to come. The next tracks, “Deep Sea Divers” and “The City” feature Deez hammering out catchy chord progressions over foot-stomping rhythms. It’s a slick formula that will refuse to leave your head. As the album progresses, “DNA” offers token hand claps as Deez bombards us with catchy, lush guitar chords despite loathing lyrics like, “When I call you are never home / And I am down to six or seven chromosomes.” Following “DNA”, Deez reminds us that less is more in the memorable tune, “Up in the Clouds”, in which his guitar work roams the fret board and showcases talent beyond playful chord progressions. By the end of the record, if you haven’t heard anything you’ve liked (which is damn-near impossible unless you happen to be soulless) then you’ll inevitably fall for the fan favorite, “Radar Detector.” On this track, Deez effortlessly sings in four different octaves showcasing his blend of trademark quirkiness and talent. “Radar Detector” is dangerously addicting and is unlike anything being made today, which renders the replay value endless. Darwin Deez (the album & the artist) sparkle with an undeniable shine. Even if you don’t have a liking for traditional indie-pop, there is something here for everyone to sit down with and appreciate. Darwin Deez is a hipster from Brooklyn with an electric guitar, a cheap-sounding drum machine, and, thankfully, a knack for writing great, hooky pop tunes. Deez's self-titled debut album aims for the willfully eccentric just a bit too often for its own good, in terms of his lyrics and slightly mannered vocal style, but if you're looking for simple but engaging pop songs that consistently hit their target, this album delivers the goods in a big way. Deez's guitar work is tough, straightforward, and fills up the spaces like a good can of spackle, his bass playing is solid and on point, and the lo-fi clank of his drum programming manages to become almost endearing by the time the album comes to a close. The tunes are sweet, no-frills pop in the classic manner -- think Radio City-era Big Star with an indie rock guitar accent, or Yo La Tengo when Ira Kaplan is trying to channel his inner Ray Davies -- and while Deez often seems to be struggling to sound more geeky and adenoidal than he actually is, when he's not forcing his shtick, his voice fits the material quite well, and for all the snark of Deez's lyrics, when he works his way through the half-baked apocalyptic visions of "The Bomb Song" to get to "Say you love me now" in the chorus, he sounds like he absolutely means it. (And the post-break up kiss-off of "Bad Day" puts his snotty side to excellent good use.) Darwin Deez is a guy who has clearly created a persona to deliver his material, but that doesn't disguise the fact he has a lot of talent and has a made an album that proves he's a 21st century indie pop prodigy with a promising future; it's anyone's guess if the "real" Darwin could do better, but pop obsessives aren't likely to fret when he's doing work this strong. © Mark Deming /TiVo.
