2 FROM YOUR RABBI I came across a Facebook post conversations concentrate on beliefs rather than in which a friend described personal attacks. Dignity is having a dialogue about asking her child about his issues, rather than people. Dignity is treating people battling toys; she was who disagree with you with the respect they wondering whether his Legos deserve.” This year, as we gather together with were the good guys or the bad those whom we love, let us all strive to be dignified guys. She shared his sage in our conversations.

For we think they’re the good guys and we’re the bad also remember that the great Thomas Paine, writing guys.” This insightful youngster can teach us so in “Common Sense”, observed: “Arguing with a much about life. Everyone who fights for something person who has renounced the use of reason, is like believes their vision, their hope, that their way is the administering medicine to the dead.” right way, the best way, the way to a better future. Knowing this, and reminding ourselves that people, Wishing us all a November of warm and kind discussions, of openness, reason, and dignity. for the most part, have good intentions, can help us as a society to have respectful discourse even Warmly, when we disagree.

As we enter the month of November and American families prepare to gather to give thanks for our nation, we know that families are not univocal. As I Rabbi Samantha O. Kahn write this, there is much happening in the news and different sides and narratives forming. So this month, I’d like to encourage you all to try and hold on to the awareness that even when we disagree on the method of getting there - our hopes and vision for a better future may be more similar than we’d like to believe. So, disagree with kindness. Remember the words of Joseph Joubert that “the aim of argument, or of discussion, should not be victory, but progress.” Wisdom today teaches us that we should strive to hear before being heard, strive to understand before being understood.

As one who spent most of her life being easily provoked in political discussion, I’ve come to meditate on the wise words of Rabbi Chaim Stern who writes, “May I be among those who are hard to provoke and easy to appease. May I be a friend of peace at home and at work, and everywhere I go. When I am angry let me reflect whether my anger is proportionate to its cause and appropriate in its expression. May I strive at all times to keep from adding to the world’s woes.” I am grateful that my Judaism provides me with a framework for understanding many political issues. I also know that others use the exact same Jewish road map and come to opposite conclusions. So therefore, I approach every conversation with thoughtful awareness of the other.

Most issues in today’s political discussions involve passionate people trying to solve challenges from different angles. Let’s explore those differences with calmness and openness that leads to respect. Rabbi Stephanie Kramer writes, “Dignified 3 TIKKUN OLUM S A J C Victims of Hurricane Dorian SOCIAL ACTION AND JUSTICE An important Tikkun Olum project for the Women of COMMITTEE Sinai and the entire congregation occurred following Hurricane Dorian. Youth Interns of Temple Sinai (YITS) Are Busy!

There are currently 15 Youth Interns of Temple Sinai (YITS), and they have been busy at work during their Sunday lunch meetings. They were excited to have planned their second event of the year “Apple- Dipping Time and Fun Outside” which was on Sun- day, October 13th, and in the next edition of The Tablet, we will report on all the fun (since at the time of this publication the event had not yet happened).

Look for more Temple Sinai Youth Group events (for November onward) in your weekly Temple Sinai e- blasts and in your email inboxes. In December, all Religious School students in grades 8 and up will have the opportunity to join in the fun at our “Escape Room” event, and more events are being planned for each month as we move forward with our teens – our YITS – in charge of their youth group!

Youth Interns of Temple Sinai (YITS) Lunch Meeting Dates two of these dates (one in November and one in December) are reserved for events

21 RABBI AND CHAZZAN PRESENT HIGH HOLY DAY WORKSHOP

“Hashkivenu Adonai, eilecha v’nashuvah, chadeish yameinu k’kedem.”

“Help us to return to you, O God; then truly shall we return. Renew our days as in the past.”

Temple Sinai’s High Holy Day workshop Sunday, September 15, led by Rabbi Kahn and Chazzan Abramson gave congregants many thought-provoking concepts in preparation for the High Holy Days. It was a most interesting morning of introspection, study, singing, discussion and meditation before the Days of Awe.

Those of us who were privileged to have attended this workshop were educated, uplifted and moved. The High Holy Days are the reminder, the wake-up call, to “return home” to Adonai, our God. Our liturgy is filled with words. Rabbi Alan Lew suggests that quiet and contemplation (meditation) is also a critical part of our spiritual practice.

Check out our 'Lifelong Adult Learning' brochures for a list of some of our upcoming Adult Learning Workshops. Brochures are located on the membership table in the Social Hall and in the temple office.
