1 Master Pieces November/December 2017 Karen’s Column By Karen Raymer President of MARA

November-December 2017

Are you one of those runners/walkers who enter a race because of the t-shirt that is provided when you enter the event? Or, do you enter an event because of the charity that benefits from the event? When entering races, charities that benefit, have influenced my decision for entering that particular race. I realize that this statement made by me, may not be looked upon favorably by t-shirt companies or t-shirt design people. I have asked other friends that are runners and this seems to be more the rule, very seldom, has anyone ever said they entered a race for the t-shirt. In my 46 years of running there have only been 2 races that I really cared what the t-shirt looked like. One is the Elvis 5K, that takes place in Memphis, TN. each August. The other one is a local race, that I will not name to “protect the innocent”!!!

I have participated in the Elvis 5K for almost all of the 35 years that the race has been held. I took most of those t-shirts and had a lovely quilt made from the t-shirts. It is a beautiful work of art, that I proudly display. I also have another quilt made from race t-shirts from some of my favorite races, both local and out of town. I believe most people enter a race for several reasons, perhaps it is location, distance, running it with friends, prize money (if you are fast enough!) or climate, but I still do not think that a t-shirt is the main reason anyone enters an event. Of course, this is my own opinion and you may have a different opinion! Wishing you happy and healthy running and/or walking. Karen

The GGRS Breast Cancer Awareness Run was a small event co-sponsored with Lawrence Memorial Hospital to raise funding for Catch a Break Foundation. All proceeds go to help with the cost of survivorship. While many cancer-related foundations and organizations direct their attention to the very worthy efforts of prevention, screening, treatment, or research, the Catch a Break fund focuses on the survivor when they return home - extending a hand to the survivor who lost their job, drained their savings to help themselves or a family member, or is forced to choose between buying cancer medication and providing a holiday meal for their family. Catch a Break funds go directly to survivors and their families. The event is typical these days of retail stores sponsoring races, training runs and clinics which draws a devoted group of followers.

To name a few - The Running Well Store, Ad Astra Running, Garry Gribble's Running Sports, KC Running Company & Sports Medicine Store, Run 816, and Ultramax Sports. Their efforts compliment what the local running clubs do and provide. The combination of these two types of organizations are a big reason for the continued boom in running sports.

Nice photos can always be taken no matter what size of the event. Any reader is encouraged to send photos to the Master Pieces editor, Renee Kidwell. Contributed stories, poems, reports are also very welcomed. (More photos on page 12.)

The course was laid out to avoid any street crossings going through the Sandra J. Shaw Park, then along the Kansas River on the Burcham Park PHOTO GALLERY trail before crossing the bridge onto the levee and back. The Bowersock water plant is in the background.

There’s good reason for spectators to chant for Jordan Hasay along the streets of Chicago. Hasay, who turned 26 last month, may be more of the great American running hope than Galen Rupp, who won the men’s 40th Bank of America , the first American in 15 years to do so. In only her second marathon, Hasay set the record for American women at the Chicago Marathon with a third-place finish of 2:20:22 seconds. That topped the Chicago record for American women (2:21:21) set by Samuelson on Oct. 20, 1985. “I wish I could say she was watching my every step in 1985, but she wasn’t even born then,’’ said Samuelson n a post-race interview with Channel 5 Josh Baden running along the Sandra Shaw Park pond “It’s an honor to follow in [Samuelson’s] footsteps,’’ Hasay said. She understands her place as an American runner. “I went with that lead pack,’’ Hasay said. “I want us to be up there.’’ By us, Hasay means American runners. She stayed with Ethiopia’s (2:18:31), the eventual winner, and ’s Brigid Kosgei until Dibaba made her winning kick mid-race. Hasay even led around the nine-mile mark. It was a tough race when they pulled away and Hasay was largely on her own. “Little scared when had 10 miles to go, and wasn’t really sure what would happen in the last couple miles,’’ Hasay said At this rate, next up for Hasay is ’s fastest American marathon time (2:19:36), set on April 23, 2006 in .
