WELCOME TO THE INAUGURAL AUSTRALIAN SCHOOLS TRIATHLON FESTIVAL

Triathlon Australia, in conjunction with School Sport Australia, is happy to welcome you to the inaugural Australian Schools Triathlon Festival.

The Australian Schools Triathlon Festival is a new multi-sport initiative presented jointly by School Sport Australia and Triathlon Australia scheduled for 18-21 April 2017 at the Sydney International Regatta Centre in Penrith, NSW.

“The Australian Schools Triathlon Festival is an outstanding opportunity for students from all over Australia to be part of this exciting new national multi-sport festival aimed specially at students,” Triathlon NSW CEO Phil Dally said.

In order to cater for all student capabilities and aspirations, Triathlon Australia and School Sport Australia has created a multi-tiered events program.

“With the combination of the School Sport Australia Triathlon Championships and the inclusion of participation Triathlon, School Relay and Aquathlon events into the Australian Schools Triathlon Festival, it opens up a whole new opportunity for students to participate in this dynamic sport on a variety of levels regardless of their experience or skill level,” Dally said.

The Australian Schools Triathlon Festival has two categories; the existing School Sport Australia Triathlon Championships and the new Australian Open Schools Triathlon. These two events encompass 5 events in total; 2 for the School Sport Australia Championships and 3 for the Australian Open Schools Triathlon.

For students to compete in the School Sport Australia Triathlon Championships they must be selected into their respective state school sport representative teams. Selection into state school sport teams qualifies the students to race in the prestigious School Sport Australia Triathlon Championship Titles.

The new Australian Open Schools Triathlon however allows any secondary student to register and compete for their school against schools from across the nation.

It is Triathlon Australia’s hope that the new Australian Schools Triathlon Festival will provide a brilliant introductory platform to triathlon for those who are new to the sport, as well as continuing to develop a lifelong love of triathlon for those who are already familiar with this wonderful sport.

WELCOME FROM SCHOOL SPORT AUSTRALIA

On behalf of the Board of School Sport Australia, I welcome all students, teachers, team officials and parents to the inaugural Australian Schools Triathlon Festival, incorporating the 27th National Schools Triathlon Championship.

Established in 1981, School Sport Australia is responsible for the development and promotion of school sport in Australia. Each year school sport representative opportunities are provided for over 6,000 students.

State and Territory school sport bodies work collaboratively and have accepted responsibility for implementing School Sport Australia programs, assisting in policy development and providing, through their individual state/territory networks, the maximum number of opportunities for students to participate in the broadest possible range of sporting activities. School sport is offered at district, regional, state and interstate level and each year, hundreds of thousands of Australian students are provided with participation opportunities.

Approved international programs and the Pacific School Games are features of the national school sport calendar. International competitions planned during 2017 include Football, Hockey, Netball and Water Polo, plus schools representing School Sport Australia will be invited to participate at International School Sport Federation competitions in Athletics and Tennis.

Interstate sporting competitions provide opportunities for students to participate in sport at the highest level. These Championships are an integral part of the School Sport Australia program, not only for their sporting benefits, but also for the immense educational, cultural and social benefits they provide for the participants.

I extend to all students my best wishes in their pursuit of selection for their State or Territory team and wish them an enjoyable and rewarding experience as they pursue their personal goals in this particular sporting endeavour.

Representing a State or Territory is an achievement of which you can feel very proud. I hope that all competitors, team officials, organisers and supporters associated with this Championship derive satisfaction and fulfilment from their involvement.

In closing, I wish to acknowledge and thank the SSA Triathlon Organising Committee, Triathlon New South Wales, Triathlon Australia, the Championship officials and all of the officials from the competing States and Territories for their contribution in ensuring the success of the Championship.

Graeme Jennings President School Sport Australia

WELCOME FROM TRIATHLON NEW SOUTH WALES

On behalf of the Triathlon community, I warmly welcome all students, teachers, parents and spectators to the inaugural Australian Schools Triathlon Festival.

The Australian Schools Triathlon Festival is new multi-sport initiative presented jointly by School Sport Australia and Triathlon Australia, which will no doubt assist in growing our great sport at a junior level.

This is an exciting opportunity for competitors who will be participating and representing their states or territories at the prestigious School Sport Australia Triathlon Championships, as well as the other competitors who will be representing their schools at the Australian Open Schools Triathlon, many of whom will be participating in their very first triathlon.

Triathlon Australia values its strong connection with School Sport Australia and the role events such as this play in the development of triathletes. Many of our current past elite triathletes such as 2016 Olympian Aaron Royle have taken part in the School Sport Australia Triathlon Championships and I look forward to seeing the names of the competitors in this program continue to flourish in future years.

I would like to extend my gratitude to the event organisers who have made the event happen and to Sydney International Regatta Centre for their tremendous support of Triathlon. I trust that you as competitors will feel inspired to be your best by competing at one of the most professional locations for triathlon in the country.

It is our hope that the Australian Schools Triathlon Festival will foster a lifelong love of the sport of triathlon and leads to you joining your local club where you can continue to live a healthy and active lifestyle.

Good luck to all competitors and we look forward to providing our continued support in future years.

Media Code of Behaviour  Provide coverage of children’s sport as well as reporting adult sport.  Be aware of the difference between adult’s sports programs and children’s sports programs.  Children are not miniature professionals and adults should not place unfair expectations upon them.  Place in proper perspective the isolated incidents of unsportsmanlike behaviour rather than make such incidents the “highlight” of the event.  Focus upon children’s fair play and their honest effort.  Identify and report on the benefits of children participating in sport.  Be aware of the difference between the goals of amateur sports and those of professional sports. Make the readers, viewers and listeners aware of these differences. MEET OUR CHAMPIONS

Loretta Harrop, Olympic Silver Medallist ( 2004 and Sydney 2000)

A keen swimmer as a youngster, was introduced to the sport of triathlon by her brother Luke in 1994. After competing in a number of local races, the Queensland born siblings travelled to Japan in 1996 and finished 3rd and 4th and their full-time triathlon careers were born.

Harrop hit the ITU World Cup circuit regularly from 1997 and quickly worked out the strategy she would become known for. Swim fast, work with a few select others to bike even faster and build an unbeatable lead from which she couldn’t be caught. It worked in her very first ITU World Cup podium, in Sydney in 1997, and then many more.

In 2002, the Australian triathlon world was shattered when Luke Harrop died, after he was hit by a stolen car while on a training ride on the Gold Coast. Loretta decided that the best way to honour her brother was to continue racing in the sport that she loved. Just a few weeks after Luke’s death, Harrop won the Australian trials for the Manchester 2002 team.

In Athens, on the course on which Michelle Jones won the test event the previous year, Loretta Harrop emulated Jones’s feat from Sydney 2000 by winning the silver medal. Harrop, the 1999 world champion who had finished fifth in Sydney, broke away on a steep hill in the 40km bike leg and led the field into the final 10km run, but was eventually passed within 200 metres of the finishing line by the Geelong-born Austrian, . Allen, who married an Austrian in 1999, had been over two minutes behind Harrop at the transition from the bicycle leg to the run. It was a gutsy display of front running from Harrop and she was satisfied that she couldn't have given any more.

Harrop is now retired from professional competition, but still races the Luke Harrop memorial event each year. She coaches a high school triathlon program and lives on the Gold Coast with her husband Brad, son Hayden and daughter Emmerson.

17

Emma Snowsill, Olympic Gold Medallist (Beijing 2008)

Emma Snowsill remains the highest award winning woman in ITU (International Triathlon Union) history. Dabbling in sports such as swimming, tennis, basketball, ballet and skiing throughout her childhood, Emma had her first foray into the world of at the age of 16 and from then on, she was hooked. Emma’s rise to the top of her sport was meteoric, winning her first National Age Title in 2000 and following it up soon after with a win at the World Champs in Perth.

Snowsill went on to become an Olympic, Commonwealth and triple World Champion in the sport including 12 ITU World Cup victories and graced the podium 23 times.

Snowsill’s victory in the women’s triathlon at the Beijing Olympics in 2008 represented a triumph over years of pain, tragedy and frustration. In 2002, when she had the Athens Olympics in her sights, her life was turned upside down. Her boyfriend, fellow triathlete Luke Harrop, was killed in a hit-and-run accident while out on a training ride. She contemplated quitting the sport, but after a break and a change of coach decided to keep going. In 2003 - when she was world champion - she suffered a stress fracture of the femur during the Olympic trials, putting her out of contention for the Athens Games. She watched the Olympic race in horror as her friend Loretta Harrop, Luke’s sister, was overtaken with the gold medal seemingly in her grasp - by Australian-turned-Austrian Kate Allen.

Snowsill, born in 1981, won the world junior championship in 2000 and took gold in the Australian Youth Olympic Festival the following year. She went on to win three world championships - in 2003, 2005 and 2007 - and to win the gold medal at the .

In Beijing, the tiny (48kg) Snowsill took the lead in the final run leg of the contest, and was never headed. “Running scared” was how she described her effort. She was waving an Australian flag before she finished. Afterwards she embraced the other place-getters, climbed into the stands to hug her coach Craig Walton then, understandably, began to weep. “Everybody had a personal story,” she said later, “and everybody deals with it differently. You can only look forward to tomorrow. You can’t change the past, only take control.”

18

Brendan Sexton, Australian Olympian

Brendan Sexton began competing in triathlon when he was 15 in his home town of Maitland, NSW. Having swum at his local pool since he was seven his parents encouraged him to give the junior triathlon event a go and he never looked back.

He made his first national team two years later at the age of 17. He began to make a name for himself in 2011, placing fourth in the World Championships in Sydney, winning the Monterrey World Cup in Mexico and coming runner up in both the Mooloolaba World Cup and Oceania Cup in New Zealand. He continued to perform strongly and was selected to make his Olympic debut in London.

After coming out of the water in London in 47th position, Sexton advanced to 35th position at the end of the bike leg, which he held until the end of the race. He finished 4:11minutes behind gold medallist Alastair Brownlee of the United Kingdom.

Competitors must run their bike back to the position on the rack from where they started. COMPETITORS MUST NOT REMOVE OR UNCLIP THEIR HELMET until after placing their bicycle on the rack.

The Run

When competitors leave transition they will run past the swim exit and in front of the Grand Stand. They then follow the path along the northern edge of the regatta lake to their designated turn point.

The run is a distance of 4km (Seniors 2x laps), 4km (Intermediates 2 x laps) and 3km (Juniors 2 x laps). Each run turn around will be clearly marked. Please keep to the right-hand side of the run course to avoid colliding with fellow competitors. There will be an aid station in front of the Grand Stand which athletes can access each lap

The Finish and Recovery

The finish line will be in front of the Grand Stand.

Volunteers will be there to assist competitors in removing the timing chip. Competitors will then move through to the recovery area where water will be available. First Aid will also be available at this point if required.
