Land Unit Information Sheet

Land system name: Desert

Land unit: DT2

General description This land unit represents areas within the Desert land system where shallow, to moderately deep, brown Kandosols (gradational-textured profiles) occur. Usually an ironstone hardpan, or sandstones impregnated with iron, occurs within 0.5m of the surface. Mid-high open woodlands of whitei (White's ironbark) predominate, often accompanied by Corymbia setosa (applejack), C. dallachiana (ghost gum) and the occasional E. brownii (Reid River box). The shrub layer includes tenuissima (narrow-leaved wattle), A. leptostachya (slender wattle), and Grevillea species, whereas the dominant grasses are Triodia pungens (gummy spinifex) and Themeda triandra (kangaroo grass). Less common, are the uniform sandy soils, also with a hardpan, which support a diverse shrubland with isolated C. setosa (applejack). Regional ecosystem 10.7.11 is predominant, but small areas of the deeper sandsheet 10.5.1 are also present.

The gradational soil profiles have a hard-setting surface soil Heartleaf poison bush is common. that reduces infiltration by water, thereby increasing runoff. Water runoff from the gradational soils reduces the amount of rainfall stored in the profile, placing an additional limitation on plant growth. The soils are highly susceptible to sheet erosion. The ground cover has a low productivity and is vulnerable to overgrazing. If degraded, it is difficult to regenerate. This land unit is included in Land Management Unit 9.
