NATIONAL YOUTH THEATRE OF GREAT BRITAIN TO HAVE SPRING PREVIEW

Young Actors To Visit Brooklyn Botanic Garden's

New Shakespeare Garden

The National Youth Theatre of Great Britain will enjoy a

spring preview on Thursday, March 29 at 3 p.m. of Brooklyn

Botanic Garden's new Shakespeare Garden, scheduled to open in

June.

The company of young actors is currently making its United

States debut in GOOD LADS AT HEART at the Brooklyn Academy of

r•lusic. r-iichael Croft, founder and director of the National

Youth Theatre, will lead the troupe in an informal presentation

of selected sketches and readings from Shakespeare's work.

The company performs Shakespeare annually in Great Britain.

f-Ir. Croft believes, "With Shakespeare we can involve large

numbers of young people, but there is more to it than that. In

this prosaic age, it seems to be good for young people to walk,

for a little, on the poetic heights."

Brooklyn Botanic Garden's Shakespeare Garden, originally a

gift from Mr. Henry c. Folger, founder of the Folger Shakespeare

Library in Washington D.C., is a mainstay of the Children's

Ga rden Program. The Shakespeare Garden, largely through the

generosity of Exxon Corporation, has been moved from a position in the Children's Garden and enlarged. When complete, it will contain more than 80 plants mentioned in Shakespeare's work .

The National Youth Theatre of Great Britian, founded in

1956, is a group of young people, from all economic and social strata, whose ages range from fourteen to twenty-three. "What makes the production so remarkable is the superbly concealed discipline, the exuberant energy of all the cast, and their ability to achieve sudden and sometimes shocking changes of pace and mood from riotously funny to tragic so that one is convinced that the characters they represent are unaware of what is happening to them.
