The Prophet / 5777 Shalom! May 2017

In the Spring-time it feels as though the world and our At Temple Isaiah calendars begin to work on over-drive. The earth comes out This Month of its winter slumber and awakes, so refreshed that for those Friday, May 5 of us who pay attention to the flowers, trees, bushes and – Munchkin 6pm yes – even weeds around our homes, we notice real changes Service 8pm and growth from day to day. Endings – the school year, the Saturday, May 6 programming year, for some projects and certificates come hurtling towards Study 9am us at an alarming speed. Beginnings – a summer vacation, a new position, a B’not Molly Robb/ 10a new adventure – many of which felt so far away only yesterday are close Lindsey Berlin enough to touch! Friday, May 12 Shabbat Service 8pm The calendar helps us contain something that otherwise would be overwhelming. In the Jewish tradition, we are now in the period of “Sefirat Saturday, May 13 HaOmer – The Counting of the .” This is the 50-day period from the Tot Shabbat 10:30am second day of to the festival of . The Torah commands us that every day during this period we are to bring a sheaf of Spring-harvest Friday, May 19 Shabbat Service 8pm , waving it while reciting a blessing to mark each day. On the All Music metaphorical level, counting seven sets of seven days links the holiday of PHYSICAL liberation (Passover) to the holiday of SPIRITUAL liberation, as Saturday, May 20 defined by the giving of Torah on Shavuot. On a deeply personal level, 9am B’nai Mitzvah Ethan 10am pausing every day to mark and give thanks for that which sustained you in Brown/ Tyler Brown life on that particular day is a manifestation of the plea in the Psalms, “Teach us to number our days, that we may acquire a heart of wisdom.” Friday, May 26 Family Shabbat Service 7pm Within this period of the Counting of the Omer, there are road-marks of Friday, June 2 sorts which help us to contain the passage of time in a specific way. We just Outdoor Shabbat 7pm passed through what is perhaps one of the most intense periods on the modern Jewish calendar. Around the 12th day of the Omer, we mark Yom Saturday, June 3 HaShoah – the day dedicated to the memory of those who perished, Torah Study 9am Bat Mitzvah Jena Bernstein 10am struggled against or survived the horrors of . Just one week later, marks its Memorial Day – Yom HaZikaron, a day dedicated to all Friday, June 9 who have lost their lives in the establishment, building and defense of the Shabbat Service 8pm State of Israel. These two days bookend a week of intense mourning and meaning for the Jewish people. And, in a move that can only be understood Saturday, June 10 Bar Mitzvah Zachary Lupo 10am by being in Israel during this time period, as the day of National Mourning Tot Shabbat 10:30am comes to a close, the country erupts into joyous revelry with Yom HaAtzmaut, the day the celebrates the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948.

Again, it is hard to describe the weight of this week, or the experience of joy that follows in giving thanks for the modern miracle that is the State of Israel. The first time I had the opportunity to spend this period living in Israel (during my junior year of college), the experience changed me in deep and lasting ways. This was also true when I spent my first year of rabbinical school living in .

However, next year I am looking forward to deepening this experience even more. Which is where you may come in! Together with super-volunteer Doris Geisler, I have begun talks with the March of the Living to book a bus of adult participants in this amazing experience in 2018. For those unfamiliar with the March of the Living, go to their website www.motl.org to see what it is all about. We will begin our trip in Poland, touring historic sites as well as some of the inspiring places where Jewish life is springing back to life there, 70-plus years after the Shoah. On Yom HaShoah, we will march with thousands of other participants from around the world from Auschwitz to Buchenwald, marking the 30th anniversary of the March. Then we will fly to Israel and continue to tour, seeing some of the inspiring modern miracles that are Israel today. After marking Yom HaZikaron, we will march with the same group through the streets of Israel, joining in the celebration of Yom HaAtzmaut for Israel’s 70th birthday! Watch your TI emails for an informational session coming soon. In the mean time, to express initial interest, drop me a line at [email protected] . Our preliminary travel dates are about 4/8/18 to 4/22/18.

Board Summary

• Two Temple Isaiah congregants are being honored at Federation Live on 6/7/17 • There will be a security guard at Temple Isaiah on all Saturdays in which a bar/bat Mitzvah is taking place • The annual meeting will be held on May 23 2017 at 7:00 P.M. • Temple Isaiah acquired one new member this month from the President

May is a marker of milestones for our Temple Isaiah family. On Friday, May 5th at Shabbat services, the Torah reading will have special meaning as the Men’s Club celebrates the 13th year of the Matzohball 5K with a “Bar Mitzvah aliyah” for the “Matzohball”. The Matzohball 5K has been Temple Isaiah’s biggest annual fundraiser and we are most grateful to the members of the Men’s Club who have worked tirelessly for these past 13 years to put together a meaningful and fun event. Please celebrate with us by coming to services on May 5 and attending and/or sponsoring Matzohball 5k on June 4th. Mazel tov, Matzohball!

On May 30th, Temple Isaiah’s confirmation class is having its graduation. Temple Isaiah’s confirmands have continued with their Jewish studies beyond B’nai Mitzvah, showing their commitment and dedication to Jewish life. To me, this is a big deal for our temple community as it is our youth and young adults who are the cultivators of the future of our Jewish community. Mazel tov to the confirmation class of 2017 and thank you for being role models to our Jewish youth and our Jewish community.

May is also a time for college graduations and I am certain that this month many of you will be celebrating graduations of your children and grandchildren. My husband and I will be celebrating not only the graduation of our son, Glen, from University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business, but also his new career in the business world. We are extremely proud of Glen as I know you are of your children and grandchildren. Mazel tov and nachas to all!

Similarly, this month I will be celebrating my own graduation from a 14 month fellowship with Class VI of Acharai, The Shoshana S. Cardin Institute. The mission of Acharai is “To empower Jewish leaders to be more informed, thoughtful and effective leaders of their Jewish organizations and community by developing leadership competencies through a Jewish lens.” My Acharai experience has been invaluable. I received transformative leadership coaching and learned inspirational Jewish texts from highly respected, top Jewish educators; I was afforded the opportunity to network with and get to know many leaders in the Greater Baltimore Jewish community; and had the special experience of being part of “President’s Circle” where I worked with fellow synagogue presidents of Greater Baltimore, exchanging ideas and discussing topics about synagogue life. Larry Gordon, immediate Past President of Temple Isaiah, graduated from Acharai and it was natural for me to want to follow in Larry’s footsteps in that regard. As Temple Isaiah President, I want to be the best leader that I can be and Acharai has given me the education, tools, inspiration and connections to work toward my greatest leadership potential and transform Temple Isaiah to even greater heights.

May we all continue learning and challenging ourselves in life. I hope May simchas bring you lots of pride and joy!

L’Shalom,

Donna Kasoff, President

Do you enjoy young children? Are you looking for a new way to be involved at Temple Isaiah? The preschool is occasionally in need of a substitute teacher when a member of our teaching staff must be out. This is usually on a Monday, Wednesday or Friday and is typically from 9:00am-2:00pm. This is a paid opportunity. Prior teaching experience, although helpful, is not necessary. Patience, warmth and a love for children is. Substitutes are always paired with a regular teacher.

To our friends and the TI Family. Thanks for your support, well wishes, and food. We were overwhelmed by your generosity. Thank you so very much. Larry and Barbara Davis

Cheryl Kaufman has been a member of Temple Isaiah for 20 years. She has been married for 27 years and has two children; Brett who is 23 and Rachael, 25. Both of her children had their bar/bat mitzvah and confirmation at TI. She was raised in a reform home and her husband grew up conservative. While her own family has self-identified as Jewish, they didn’t feel connected to .

However, things changed dramatically when her son went to Israel for 3 months through the Alexander Muss High School program. He came back as a hybrid Reform/Orthodox Jew. He wore a and wore a all the time and became very observant except for keeping kosher. Brett was extremely unsettled and confused when he returned from Israel which concerned his parents. Cheryl’s cousin Lynne recommended that she go to Israel. She went in 2012 with the Jewish Women’s Renaissance Project, a version of Birthright for mothers with children under 18. While in Israel, her connection to Judaism bloomed and she understood the transformation that her son had gone through. After this trip, she realized that she needed to have a stronger connection to her faith and started Torah study one on one with an Orthodox woman.

Cheryl’s passion in life is social activism. She worked for Meals on Wheels for ten years before starting Kugel Connection. Kugel Connection is a non-profit social action organization enhancing the lives of senior citizens in Howard County by providing services that promote socialization through volunteer acts of kindness. Last year they touched the lives of about 50 seniors with the help of 100 volunteers. Cheryl also co-founded J-WoHoCo (Jewish Women of Howard County) which is in its second year. J-WoHoCo aims to bring together Jewish women of all ages and backgrounds from Howard County for friendship, learning, and spiritual growth. J-WoHoCo offers social, educational and inspirational programming toward that goal. Beyond these two groups, Cheryl also helps foster Temple Isaiah’s relationship with Grassroots by helping to coordinate the food donations for the Cold Weather Shelter and the Day Resource Center. The Temple Isaiah Social Action Committee, along with volunteers, donate food to the DRC on the second Wednesday of each month. This is the day that brings the most people to the DRC as everyone knows that the “Jewish Church” has the best food.

When Cheryl’s son became a bar mitzvah, she told him that his project had to be more than just donating some money from his gifts to charity. He and his father made toy boxes and he went to local shops for do- nations to fill the boxes. These boxes full of items went to the Ronald McDonald House. She and her hus- band have continued giving to the Ronald McDonald house by donating and serving a meal every other month as a continuation of their son’s mitzvah.
