The M6/A38 (M) or M5/A46 arrive from the North. The best route from London is via the M40/M42/A45 or M1/M6/A38 (M). From the South West, the M5/A456 route is often the quickest. Please note that there are currently major roadworks being carried out in Birmingham city centre, which may affect your journey. Car parking Due to our unique city centre location car parking space is limited. Onsite Blue badge parking can be arranged by request. However, there are several Pay and Display car parks in close proximity to our Crossways Office. The nearest car park is: NCP: Paradise Circus, Brindley Drive, Birmingham B1 2NB By Bus: National Express West Midlands bus routes that stop on Great Charles Street Queensway, next to our offices include: No. 9: Stourbridge – Birmingham via Halesowen No. 10: Quinton – Birmingham via Augustus Road No. 82: Bear Wood – Birmingham via Cape Hill No.12 /12a / 87: Dudley – Birmingham Timetables and routes do change, check before travelling at www.travelwm.co.uk By train: From New Street Station: Leave the station through the main exit (near Boots), and enter onto Stephenson Street. Turn left onto Stephenson Street and turn immediately right onto Lower Temple Street. Walk up Lower Temple Street and turn left onto New Street. Continue to follow New Street until you reach Bennetts Hill on your right-hand side. Follow Bennetts Hill, crossing Colmore Row into Newhall Street until the traffic lights at Great Charles Street. Cross to the other side and turn left. Follow Great Charles Street and turn right at the end into Summer Row, where the UCB entrance is situated. From Snow Hill Station On exit turn right into Colmore Row, continue crossing Livery Street and Church Street and turn right into Newhall Street at the traffic lights. Follow Newhall Street until the traffic lights at Great Charles Street. Cross to the other side and turn left. Follow Great Charles Street and turn right at the end into Summer Row, where the UCB entrance is situated When you arrive please ask for AccessCentral at reception. BIRMINGHAM JEWELLERY QUARTER HERITAGE TRAIL 11 BROUGHT TO YOU BY BIRMINGHAM JEWELLERY QUARTER HERITAGE TRAIL Birmingham’s famous Jewellery Quarter is completely unique - there is no other historic townscape like it in the world. It is an area rich in heritage, but what makes it so special is that it is still also a living, working community. The purpose of this walking trail is to provide an introduction to the Quarter’s past and present, and to encourage visitors to discover more about this fascinating area. This trail is printed and distributed by the Jewellery Quarter Development Trust (JQDT). The development of the Jewellery Quarter. Goldsmiths and silversmiths have been working in what we now call the Jewellery Quarter for more than 200 years. Originally scattered across Birmingham, they began to congregate in the Hockley area from 1760 onwards. The main reason for this was the development of the Colmore family’s Newhall estate which released more land for housing and manufacturing. 1 Precious metal working grew out of the ‘toy’ trades – not children’s playthings but buckles, buttons and other small metal trinkets. ‘Brummagem toys’ were produced in their hundreds and thousands, in cut-steel, brass and silver. Westley’s Map of Birmingham, 1731 - Confusingly north is to the right! As the trade expanded new streets were laid out across former rural estates, and substantial new houses were built for wealthy manufacturers. Alongside these large houses, terraces of artisans’ homes were also constructed. In time the gardens of these houses became built up with workshops and spare rooms had work benches installed.
