FLYERS vs. PANTHERS This is the second of three meetings between the teams this year and Florida’s second and final visit to Philadelphia this season. The Flyers will visit Sunrise on December 29.

LAST MEETING

Tuesday, October 16, 2018 – Flyers 6, Florida 5 (SO) at Wells Fargo Center: Jordan Weal scored in the third round of the shootout to lift the Flyers to the 6-5 win over the Panthers. Florida started off the scoring with 2:02 left in the first period on a goal by Frank Vatrano, but Weal, Claude Giroux and Wayne Simmonds each tallied in the first 8:50 of the second period to turn that into a 3-1 lead. Vatrano struck again with 7:29 left in the second, but after that came two more Flyers goals – a second each for Giroux and Simmonds – to give the Flyers a 5-2 lead. But the Panthers were eventually able to tie the score on a late second period goal by Aleksander Barkov and third period tallies from him and Evgenii Dadonov. In the shootout, Jake Voracek and Barkov tallied in the first two rounds, setting the stage for Weal’s winner. Brian Elliott started and made 19 saves on 23 shots through 45:06 before stepping aside for Cal Pickard, who took the win with two saves in 19:54 of action and two saves in the shootout. Michael Hutchinson stopped 21 of 26 in the loss. Stars of the Game: 1 – Claude Giroux; 2 – Aleksander Barkov; 3 – Wayne Simmonds.

NOTABLES The Flyers scored five goals in the second period. It was the 62nd occasion out of 11,910 periods in franchise history that the team has scored five or more goals. The last such occasion was March 30, 2017 in the first period against the New York Islanders.

Christian Folin played 18:33 and recorded an assist. He was a plus-4, tying a career high he set on Oct. 18, 2017 with Los Angeles vs. Montreal.

Claude Giroux scored two goals and led the Flyers with eight shots on goal. It’s his ninth career game of eight or more shots but his first since Dec. 21, 2016 when he had 8 in a win over Washington. The Flyers are 6-1-2 when Giroux has eight or more shots on goal.

Wayne Simmonds scored twice, converting both his shots on goal, while playing just 12:33 due to 14 PIM. He now leads the Flyers with five goals on the season.

Jordan Weal had a goal and an assist for his fourth career two-point game and scored the game-winning shootout goal in the third round. He also went 9-for-13 (69 pct) on faceoffs.

LAST GAME

Saturday, November 10, 2018 – Flyers 4, Chicago 0 at Wells Fargo Center: Sean Couturier scored twice and added an assist and Claude Giroux also had a three-point game to pace the Flyers’ win over Chicago. Giroux started the scoring with 5:04 left in the first period, and Couturier added a tally 9:12 into the second that was one second shy of being a shorthanded goal. Couturier’s second came 4:16 into the third, and both were set up by Giroux. Nolan Patrick added an empty-netter with 61 seconds left. Brian Elliott made 33 saves for his first of the season and second as a Flyer, while stopped 21 shots in the defeat. Stars of the Game: 1 – Sean Couturier; 2 – Claude Giroux; 3 – Brian Elliott.

NOTABLES

Brian Elliott earned his first shutout of the season, his second as a Flyer and the 38th of his career. It was just the fourth where he had to make 33 or more saves, joining a 33-save effort on March 23, 2014 for St. Louis at Pittsburgh, and two 37-save : one on March 22, 2012 for STL at Los Angeles and one on March 22, 2016 for STL at San Jose.

Sean Couturier posted his 10th career two-goal game and his 11th of three or more points. It’s his second multi-point game in the last three.

Claude Giroux recorded the 50th game of his career of three or more points, and his second in the last week. Giroux has three goals and five assists for eight points in the last three games, and has four goals and seven assists for 11 points in the team’s six-game point streak.

Giroux and Couturier were each plus-4, which ties a career high for both of them. It was Giroux’s fourth such game and Couturier’s third. Both most recently hit the number on April 7, 2018 vs. NYR.

Couturier and Nolan Patrick each led the team with four shots on goal. Couturier had nine total attempts – one more that was blocked and four more that missed.

NOTES OF THE NIGHT The Flyers have outscored their opponents 25-14 during their current six-game unbeaten streak (5-0-1), including their first shutout win of the season. They’ve scored five goals in three of the five wins.

The Flyers remain second in the NHL in faceoff percentage at 54.5 pct on the season. Six Flyers are at 53 percent or better, led by Jordan Weal at 59.7 percent and followed closely by Scott Laughton at 58.1 percent and Claude Giroux at 57.4 percent. Weal is fifth in the league among 153 players who have taken 60 or more draws this year, while Laughton is 10th and Giroux is 13th.

Claude Giroux was named the NHL’s Third Star of the Week yesterday after posting three goals and five assists for eight points in the last three games, which was tops in the league last week. The run included Giroux’s 50th career game of three or more points, making him just the ninth Flyer to do so. Giroux now has 183 career multi-point games, which is sixth-most in team history and is two back of Rick MacLeish for fifth.

During his recent run, Giroux passed MacLeish to move into fourth place in franchise history in overall points with 699. In addition to being one point shy of 700 on his career, Giroux needs just two assists to tie Brian Propp for second in franchise history in that category, which would put him behind only Bobby Clarke.

Sean Couturier also had a three-point game against Chicago and is on a three-game point streak (3-3-6), with two multi-point games in that run. Couturier played 24:10 in that game, marking the 18th game of his career of 24 or more minutes. One of those games was in 2014, and the other 17 have all come since the start of last season. In his first six years, Couturier averaged 17:30 of ice time per game; in last season and so far this year, he has averaged 21:37, which is the most among Flyers forwards in that time and is second only to Ivan Provorov.

Giroux, Couturier and Wayne Simmonds each have seven goals on the season, which lead the team. Simmonds has had at least 24 goals in each of his six full seasons with the Flyers.

Ivan Provorov is averaging 25:06 of ice time per game, which ranks 10th in the NHL. He leads the league in that category among players 22 or younger; none of the players ahead of him are under the age of 24.

Shayne Gostisbehere became the 10th defenseman this season to score an GWG. It was the sixth of his career. Gostisbehere and John Moore are the only defensemen in the NHL to record six power play goals since the start of Gostisbehere’s rookie season of 2015-16.

Scott Laughton has six goals on the year, all of which are at even-strength. Through 17 games, he’s four short of his career high of 10 goals set in 81 games last season, and is three short of his career high of nine even-strength goals also set last year.

Hakstol, 47 (7/30/1968), came to the Flyers from the University of North Dakota, where he served as the head coach of the school’s hockey program for 11 seasons. During that time, Hakstol’s teams posted an overall record of 289-143-43 (.654). The Warburg, Alberta native led UND to the NCAA postseason in each of his 11 seasons, including seven appearances in the NCAA Frozen Four, most of any program in the country during that span. North Dakota won three regular-season conference titles under Hakstol (WCHA 2008-09 and 2010-11; NCHC 2014-15). He also led UND to four WCHA playoff titles (05-06, 09-10, 10-11 and 11-12).

WE HAVE LIFT HOFF With two assists on Nov. 11 vs. OTT, Mike Hoffman registered his career-best 12th consecutive game with a point (7-7-14), making him the first Panther to have reached a 12-game point streak since Pavel Bure did so en route to the Panthers franchise record 13- game win streak (March 10-April 5, 2000). Hoffman and Bure are now the only two Panthers to have surpassed the 11-game point streak mark. The 28-year old native of Kitchener, Ontario, has scored six goals over his last nine games and ranks first on the club in shots (49), while tied for first in goals (7) and power-play goals (3). Hoffman has produced 12 points (7-5-12) over 13 career NHL games vs. PHI. Of his seven career games at PHI, Hoffman has recorded five points (3-2-5).

CAT DADDY Evgenii Dadonov 's assist on Nov. 11 vs. OTT extended his point streak to a career-best 11 consecutive games (6-7-13). With the assist, Dadonov became the third Panther in franchise history to have registered an 11-game point streak. Heading into tonight's game, Hoffman's point streak ranks as the league's longest active point streak and with a point tonight can become the longest point streak recorded in the NHL this season. Keith Yandle 's current seven-game point streak is the longest active streak among defensemen. He is one of only two D-men to have posted points in seven straight games this season.

TOO HOT TO YANDLE Keith Yandle enters the 2018-19 season as the NHL's active iron man leader, having played in 729 consecutive NHL regular season games. Yandle currently leads all Panthers defensemen in points (3-12-15) and leads the Cats in assists and average TOI per game (24:20). He has notched points in eight of his last nine games (2-6-8) and enters tonight on a season-high seven-game point streak, the longest in franchise history by a defenseman.
