Studies have shown that myth and religious thought played a crucial role in the creation of the Star Wars Universe. This article continues that tradition, albeit from a particular perspective that highlights religious language: by viewing The Mandalorian through a New Testament lens, it is argued that while many elements of popular culture reference Biblical or mythological sources, The Mandalorian’s use of these referents illustrates the way in which ancient religious and New Testament literature are still very much a shared phenomenon. Both The Mandalorian and the New Testament share certain timeless topoi: a mysterious character with extraordinary abilities, a connection to life-giving powers of the universe that give extraordinary abilities, choosing a certain way of life and the costs thereof, and also themes such as “debt”, “redemption”, and “beliefs” and how these are challenged. Herron 1 Aj Herron Instructor’s Name ENGL 1013 Date Star Wars Versus Star Trek Star Wars and Star Trek are both science based and involve space travel and aliens. The Star Trek television series was originally produced in 1966, and it influenced the 1977 beginning of the popular Star Wars films. In 1979, the first Star Trek movie was released. Star Wars and Star Trek movies have more or less the same setting or surroundings but have extremely different levels of on-screen conflict, unique recognizable characters, and slightly different genres. Star Wars movies all center around the conflict between the Rebel Alliance, who fight for their freedom, and the Galactic Empire, who fight to keep control. A child can identify this as a conflict between good and evil. Adults identify the sides of the conflict by their names: the Sith (evil) and the Jedi (good). Star Wars even color-codes these groups by their lightsabers, as if to highlight the ongoing conflict by labeling the good guys with green lightsabers and the bad guys with red lightsabers. These two powerful groups, the Sith and the Jedi, can even further be identified as the dark side and the light side. Without these conflicts, the Star Wars movies would essentially have no plot. On the other hand, Star Trek movies feature the conflict of a crew having to make moral decisions about various dilemmas. For example, they are put into situations in which they have to decide whether or not to protect the peace of others, stand against racism, and solve other political or ethical problems.

Over the last thirty-five plus years he has created some of the most recognizable characters of our time. These characters are so ubiquitous in America that they are almost burned into our collective unconscious; they are the archetypes of the modern era. The mention of Star Wars or Indiana Jones sets off the imagination, drawing people into the worlds Lucas has created. The music from both series of movies is immediately recognizable as are the names Luke Skywalker, Yoda, Princess Leia, Darth Vader, Indiana Jones and Obi-Wan Kenobi. While the movies made around these characters welcomed them to the world, their influence is also attributed to their extremely adept promotion. Additionally, most of the money made from these characters comes not from their movies but rather from their merchandise. The Star Wars series has spawned countless spin-offs, all of which serve to increase the public's awareness of them. There have been books, toys, comic books, clothing, radio shows, a Disneyland ride, food items, cartoons, novelties and over twenty-five computer and video games. The Indiana Jones series has been no slouch either, giving rise to toys, books, a television show, another Disneyland ride, comic books and its own set of computer and video games. It is easy to see that George Lucas is a very shrewd businessman. When the original Star Wars movie was made, he retained the rights to any merchandise and he has used those rights brilliantly.
