Around The League

Up In Arms At Wagner With junior righthander Mike D’Angelis’ (Paramus, NJ/St. Joseph Regional) selection on Monday, Wagner has now had three different hurlers awarded NEC Pitcher of the Week honors in the first four weeks of the season. D’Angelis, who threw six innings of shutout ball on Sunday against James Madison to lower his earned run average to 3.06 on the year, joins teammates Andrew Bailey (Haddon Heights, NJ/Paul VI) and John Polonitza (Cranford, NJ/Cranford), who were recognized on March 14 and February 28, respectively. Bailey, a junior righthander is 2-1 with a 3.00 ERA this season, while Polonitza, a senior righty, is 1-0 with a 3.52 ERA.

Pioneer Heartbreakers Sacred Heart has lost four one-run games already this season, including three over the weekend to Yale. The Pioneers sport a pair of hard-luck pitchers in junior southpaw Chris Aldrich (Medway, MA/Medway) and sophomore righthander Jay Monti (Marlboro, NY/Marlboro). Aldrich is just 1-2, but has compiled a 1.96 earned run average and has fanned 26 batters in 23.0 innings. Monti is 0-3 on the season, though his ERA sits at a respectable 3.12.

NEC Coaching Institutions A testament to the longevity and success of NEC coaches is the fact that six skippers have combined for 1,909 victories and eight NEC Coach of the Year awards. Now in his 29th season at Long Island, Frank Giannone is the league’s winningest active coach with 531 career victories (also a school record). He has compiled 18 winning seasons and has been associated in roughly 65 percent of the Blackbirds’ games since the program’s inception in 1929. St. Francis (NY)’s Frank Del George enters his 25th year leading the Terriers, and is the school’s all-time leader with 406 career victories. Sacred Heart’s Nick Giaquinto is now in his 18th season at the helm of the Pioneer program and has 294 wins to his credit, while Monmouth’s Dean Ehehalt, in his 12th year at the Jersey Shore school, has upped his victory total to 270. Quinnipiac’s Dan Gooley has won 253 games in two separate stints with the Bobcats spanning 15 years and Central Connecticut State’s Charlie Hickey - the youngest of the group - has amassed 155 wins in just six seasons leading the Blue Devils. Del George (1995, 1998), Ehehalt (1996, 2002) and Hickey (2001, 2003) are all two-time NEC Coach of the Year award winners, while Giannone (1990) and Gooley (2004) have been honored once apiece.

DeFabbia Takes Reigns At FDU The newest member of the NEC coaching fraternity is Fairleigh Dickinson’s Jerry DeFabbia, who takes over for Dennis Sasso, the Knights’ longtime coach who retired following the 2004 campaign with over 300 wins. DeFabbia returns to his alma mater after serving as assistant coach at Pace University from 2001-2004. He also held assistant positions at Iona in 2000 and at FDU from 1996-99, during which the Knights captured two NEC regular season crowns. DeFabbia finished his collegiate playing career with FDU by earning all-NEC honors as a shortstop with the Knights in 1992 after leading the league with a .408 batting average. He went on to play professionally for four years, including stints with the St. Paul Saints, Erie Sailors, Tri-City Posse and the Catskill Cougars.

NEC Regular Season Format In 2002, the NEC realigned as a single division after three years with a two-division format. Each team plays 24 league games, facing each member institution three times. The top four teams on the basis of winning percentage qualify for the NEC Tournament. Lakewood’s FirstEnergy Park To Host NEC Tournament For Fourth Straight Year For the fourth straight year, the Northeast Conference Baseball Tournament will be held at FirstEnergy Park in Lakewood, New Jersey. FirstEnergy Park, a $22 million facility that finished construction in April, 2001, is the home of the Lakewood Blue Claws, a class A affiliate of the Philadelphia Phillies. The venue seats 6,588 with grass availability for an additional 3,000 fans. The BlueClaws enjoyed terrific fan support in their first four seasons, leading the South Atlantic League each year with an average attendance of nearly 7,000 fans per game. The team also set a new record for minor league baseball attendance in the state of New Jersey in 2001. The three-day, double-elimination event is set for May 20-22 with a rain date on May 23. The championship field will feature the NEC’s top four regular season finishers. Central Connecticut State is the three-time defending conference champion.

Central Connecticut State Picked As NEC Favorite Three-time defending champion Central Connecticut State has been tabbed the preseason favorite to capture the 2005 Northeast Conference baseball championship, according to a poll of league head coaches. The Blue Devils earned seven of nine first place votes in the balloting. Quinnipiac was picked second and claimed a single first place vote, just ahead of third place Monmouth. Wagner, which was awarded the remaining first place vote, was chosen fourth, followed by Mount St. Mary’s, Long Island, St. Francis (NY), Sacred Heart and Fairleigh Dickinson.

Central Connecticut State (41-17-1, 20-4 NEC), which established a new conference record with 41 victories last season, was hit hard by graduation, but still possesses enough firepower to take aim at a third straight regular season crown and a league record fourth consecutive tournament title. The Blue Devils have led the NEC in hitting and runs scored in each of the last three years, but sixth year head coach Charlie Hickey - who has guided CCSU to a combined 39-10 record in league play over the last two seasons - will have to tinker with a lineup that lost four first team all-conference performers, including second baseman Keith Stegbauer, the 2004 NEC Player of the Year. The top returnee is junior third baseman Matt Memoli (Shelton, CT/Shelton), who ranked fifth in the NEC with a .359 average and drove in 36 runs. Senior outfielder Tom Pezzello (Waterford, CT/Waterford), the lone returning starter in the outfield, hit .284 and was the league’s fifth-leading run producer with 44 RBI in 2004. Senior John Blaze (Trumbull, CT/Notre Dame) and junior Dan Tarnowski (Colchester, CT/Bacon Academy) also figure to see regular playing time in the infield. On the mound, senior righthander Scott Vitelli (West Haven, CT/West Haven) emerged as one of the NEC’s most dominating pitchers last season when he led the conference with nine wins (against just four defeats), and ranked third with a 2.70 earned run average. Sporting pinpoint control, the second team all-NEC hurler walked just eight batters in 76.2 innings. Sophomore hurlers Mark Peterson (Canton, CT/Canton) and Evan Scribner (Washington Depot, CT/Shepaug Valley), who worked primarily in relief last year and played key roles for CCSU during the NEC Tournament, should step into the Blue Devil rotation in 2005. Peterson (6-2 record, 4.48 ERA in 2004) lifted his team into the NEC championship game by striking out 10 Wagner batters in an 8.2 inning stint, while Scribner (4-3, 4.72 ERA) worked 7.0 innings and allowed just one earned run in the 10-3 title clincher over the Seahawks.
