TUESDAY 28th MARCH 2017 MARKET REPORT 11 steers averaged 182.04ppk and topped at 217.50ppk (£1519) 12 young bulls averaged 169.11ppk and topped at 216.50ppk (£1581) 18 heifers averaged 219.55ppk and topped at 259.50ppk (£1602) 5 OTM cattle topped at 119.50ppk (£1097) 2270 Hoggs averaged 170.59ppk and topped at £105.00 (233.00ppk) 190 cull ewes averaged £82.18 and topped at £121.00
This week saw very good numbers of hoggs through Malton Market reaching 2270. The average price for all hoggs reached 170.59ppk compared to last week’s average of 160.58ppk. Pens consistently reached over 200.00ppk and topped 233.00ppk. Ewes also did well this week as a pen of 7 texels reached £121.00 and all ewes averaged £82.18. Heifers were another good trade this week as the top price per kilo reached 259.50ppk. 12 YOUNG BULLS There were another good number of bulls through the ring this week as they topped 216.50ppk. The top price per kilo went to a 15 month old Limousin from RH Mason of Wold Newton, weighing 625kg and selling for 216.50ppk (£1353) to Cleveland Meat Co Ltd. The top price per head went to a 29 month old Limousin from W Gibson & Son of Cayton, weighing 785kg and selling for £1581.78 (201.50ppk). Others to do well included a 22 month old Lim from JM & EP Mackley weighing 645kg and reaching 208.50ppk. The top price per head went to a 22 month old Limousin from CF Beal of Yedingham, weighing 715kg and selling for 212.50ppk (£1519). Others to do well included 3 more Limousin steers from TFW Morley & Bros reaching 214.50ppk (24 months), 212.50ppk (25 months) and 211.50ppk (24 months). A 16 month old Aberdeen Angus steer from M Southwell & Partners of Hempholme reached 179.50ppk. 18 HEIFERS Trade remained firm for heifers this week although slightly disappointing number through the ring this week. More are needed please. The top price per kilo went to an excellent 20 month old Limousin from N Marwood of Harome, weighing 590kg and selling for 259.50ppk (£1531) to Stepney Hill Farm Shop. The top price per head went to another beast from N Marwood a 28 month old heifer weighing 740kg and selling for £1602 (216.50ppk) to Worsley Wholesale Butchers. Others to do well included a 17 month old Lim from DR Jackson & Sons of Carnaby, selling for 257.50ppk (£1403). A 21 month old British Blue from J & R Waind of Brawby reached 255.50ppk (£1405). 5 OTM CATTLE A disappointing number of OTM cattle this week as demand is still high for all types. OTM cattle (over 30 months and under 72 months of age) A 62 month old Holstein from JEW & RR Cooper & Sons of Ganton reached 80.50ppk (£430) and weighed 535kg. Older cull cows (over 72 months old) A 128 month old Limousin from Bentley Bros of Salton reached 119.50ppk (£693). A 119 month old Blonde D’Aquataine from TH Burton of Staxton reached 106.50ppk (£601). A 94 month old Charolais from H Reeder of Harwood Dale reached 104.50ppk (£1097). A 146 month old Holstein from Grange Farm at Bulmer reached 87.50ppk (£616).
2270 HOGGS A very good number of hoggs this week as there are signs trade is improving. The average for prime hoggs reached 189.47ppk this week compared to the national average reaching 182.00ppk (AHDB, 2017). The top price per kilo went to an excellent pen of 10 Texel’s from DV Southwell of Burton Fleming, weighing 41kg and selling for 233.00ppk (£95.50) to Bowland Foods. The top price per head went to a fit pen of 2 Texel’s from J Kilby of Rillington reaching £105 (219.00ppk) to Turners Butchers of Rillington.
