That’s what forecasters say. Rain has finally started coming our way, but not enough as yet. Some early Iarrival fungi have appeared in our area so it’s a good time to talk about the do’s and don’ts of collecting mushrooms. Be 100% certain of what you have. Do not eat any- thing unless its identity is incontrovertible. Don’t rely only on a book of images to identify what you have. Contact the Fungus Federation of Santa Cruz if in doubt. They have the experts! Some of the fungi we will see here are eaten by slugs, snails, rabbits, squirrels, deer, and yes, humans. Gnats and flies can deposit their eggs on some of the fungi and their larvae will feed on the fruiting bodies. Although there are a good number of different fungi appearing in the Reserve, these are a just a few. REMEMBER: COLLECTING IS NOT PERMITTED! From http://mykoweb.com: Mycena capillaripes is one of the first to appear in the pine needle duff. These little brown mushrooms are ubiquitous. They are readily seen along the entrance road at the edge of the pines in slightly open areas. Due to their very small size, they are not considered edible. Chroogomphus vinicolor (aka pine spike) grows in the duff under our pines. It is recognized by a Mycena capillaripes mahogany-colored cap, salmon-orange flesh, orange-brown tapering stem, and gills that run down the stem. Although it is said to be edible, it is very mediocre when fresh. Some people dry this mushroom to store and later reconstitute for use in soups and sauces. Chroogomphus vinicolor Sparassis radicata (aka cauliflower fungus). As its common name suggests, the densely branched fruiting body of Sparassis radicata resembles a cauliflower. Initially creamy-buff in color, the long-lived fruiting bodies (the part that produces spores) gradually darken in age, especially along the branch edges. Sparassis radicata is believed to be parasitic on conifers. Gymnopilus junonius (aka jumbo gym) grows at the base of our pine trees. It is quite distinctive because its yellowish- orange clustered fruitings are often massive in a huge cascade of mushroom caps. The combination of a clustered group on wood, orange cap, well-developed ring, bitter taste, and rusty spores make it easy to identify. This one is fantastic to photograph but can make you very ill. Severe gastrointesti- nal distress is not something you want to fool around with. Sparassis radicata POINT LOBOS MAGAZINE All photos by Chuck Bancroft. Phaeolus schweinitzii (aka Dyer’s polypore) grows solitary or plentifully at the base of our pines. Nicely moist when fresh this will dry out and become very woody, per- sisting throughout the season. It is highly esteemed by dye-makers for coloring yarn. It is thought to be poisonous. Omphalotus olivascens (aka jack-o-lantern) grows at the base of the live oaks or from buried roots. The fruiting bodies are among a variety of fungi that are luminescent, at least when fresh, though to appreciate this quality requires sit- ting for many minutes in a completely dark room before the greenish glow becomes visible. The incredibly large cluster of caps is toxic and causes severe gastrointestinal distress. Some Gymnopilus junonius people have often mistaken this for the delectable chanterelle. Amanita muscaria (aka fly agaric) with its bright red, sometimes dinner plate-sized caps, is one of the most striking of all mushrooms. The white warts that adorn the cap, white gills, well-developed ring, and distinctive volva (membranous sacs or cups) of concentric rings separate this from all other red mushrooms. There are several color variet- Phaeolus schweinitzii Omphalotus olivascens ies of A. muscaria in the U.S. ranging from red, orange, yellow, and white. Fruitings occur in early winter, and can be spec- tacular, with large groups or rings brightening the woods. Amanita phalloides (aka death cap) IS DEADLY POISONOUS. Important field characteristics are the smooth, yellowish-green to yellowish-brown cap, sometimes with a thin, appressed (lying flat) white universal veil (a covering over the gills or pores of young mush- rooms) patch, usually non-furrowed cap Amanita muscaria margin, free, cream- colored gills, normally solid, not hollow stem, and thin, white, membranous, sac-like volva. The death cap is found widely in coastal areas under live oak. Color can vary and can easily be mistaken for other mushrooms. And yes….I’ve left off the truly incredible edibles found off the Reserve, because no fungophile would ever tell you which ones are the very best and exactly where to find them. Your best bet is to join the Fungus Federation of Santa Cruz and learn from the experts.     INVENTING ANAIS NIN: CELEBRITY AUTHORSHIP AND THE CREATION OF AN ICON Thesis presented by Anita Jarczok Under the supervision of Dr. Sinead McDermott and Dr. Patricia Moran For the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Submitted to the University of Limerick, September 2011 ABSTRACT This thesis examines the process of the construction of Anaїs Nin’s public persona (or rather personae) by herself and by the popular media in the United States from 1966 onwards, with a special focus on socio-cultural processes that contributed to the production and sedimentation of Nin’s public image. This involves, on the one hand, the analysis of Nin’s involvement in the process of self-construction and self- promotion; on the other, the study of how various media contributed to the invention of Anaїs Nin. I also analyse how Nin’s name and persona have been used and what she has come to signify. I investigate what Nin has stood for, what sort of statements she has been brought to support, what products she has advertised, and what debates she has triggered. In order to accomplish these aims, I rely on the archival research, textual analysis, an examination and application of critical theories to position my study. As far as a critical framework is concerned, I situate my study between autobiography studies and cultural studies. There is not a crumb of dirt anywhere, nor a chair misplaced. We are all alone here and we are dead. Last night Boris discovered that he was lousy. I had to shave his armpits and even then the itching did not stop. How can one get lousy in a beautiful place like this? But no matter. We might never have known each other so intimately, Boris and I, had it not been for the lice. Boris has just given me a summary of his views. He is a weather prophet. The weather will continue bad, he says. There will be more calamities, more death, more despair. Not the slightest indication of a change anywhere. The cancer of time is eating us away. Our heroes have killed themselves, or are killing themselves. The hero, then, is not Time, but Timelessness. We must get in step, a lock step, toward the prison of death. There is no escape. The weather will not change. It is now the fall of my second year in Paris. I was sent here for a reason I have not yet been able to fathom. I have no money, no resources, no hopes. I am the happiest man alive. A year ago, six months ago, I thought that I was an artist. I no longer think about it, I am. Everything that was literature has fallen from me. There are no more books to be written, thank God.

One of their most unfortunate common traits was their lack of acceptance by the literary establishment. Both of them had unfair one-dimensional reputations which largely have remained intact, years after their deaths. For example, Miller was always seen as a writer of "dirty books," his early master­ pieces such as Tropic of Cancer being regarded by many as little more than the literary equivalent of a raunchy stag film. Kerouac was viewed by many critics, and much of the pUblic, as nothing more than a hard-drinking, hell-raising hoodlum transcribing the "hep" aphorisms of his "beatnik" friends.

In this sequel of the second hundred books Magee’s method of bibliographical description has been retained with some modifications. In the title page transcriptions the text is in roman capital letters. Line endings are indicated with a vertical line, and the terms device, decoration and illustration are used to indicate printer’s device, and non-representative and representative im- ages. Measurements are height by width of the page to the eighth of an inch. Inferred pagination is provided in parentheses—roman for preliminary material and arabic for text. Preliminary leaves for which pagination cannot be inferred are listed in the contents note but are not included in the pagination count. The use of colors in printing and lettering is indicated. The generic term illustrations encompasses such material as facsimiles, maps, drawings and sketches, photographs and photographic reproduc- tions, woodcuts, linoleum cuts and engravings, and plates. The text type and the method of composition are identified as in Magee. But to the processes he describes— hand set, monotype, linotype, intertype—are added linotronic, phototype and, more recently, computer composition. At least 14 houses — including three historic buildings and a recently constructed trophy home — were destroyed late Sunday and early Monday after a lightning strike near Coast Gallery touched off what firefighters call the Basin Complex Fire. By midweek, the blaze had consumed about 23,000 acres. Thompson’s feature-writing experiments from 1961 onward furnished the necessary tools for him to make the final leap to his icono- clastic Gonzo style in 1970. SEC T ION I: SOME ISSUES ABOU T DEFINI T ION 1. THE ORI G IN OF GONZO , REVISI T E D unter S. Thompson has long been known as the literary journalist Hwhose stories necessarily pivoted on his own actions in order to suc- ceed. This excessive “Gonzo” persona, which served him spectacularly well in the early 1970s, eventually overwhelmed his content and exiled him from the journalistic main stage to a kind of sideshow of recidivist buffoonery. There he remained for a quarter century until his self-inflicted demise in 2005. But in 2010, several scholars1 sensed a pendulum swing back in the direc- tion of creative strategies for literary journalism, which makes Thompson an ideal candidate for reassessment. The intention here, then, seven years after Thompson left the stage,2 is to re-examine his work by minimizing the discus- sion of the usual tropes—the Herculean consumption of alcohol and pharma- ceuticals as instigator of Dionysian inspiration, the cigarette holder as anach- ronistic nicotine delivery system, anti-fashion statements such as Hawaiian Literary Journalism Studies Vol. 4, No. 1, Spring 2012 52 Literary Journalism Studies shirts and leisure wear, the mumbled speech, and so on—and instead to in- vestigate the literary and journalistic qualities of the texts themselves.

    AN OFFICIAL PRESS RELEASE Henry Miller Library The Henry Miller Memorial Library Announces the Final Big Sur Redwood Auction, Sunday October 6th at 12 Pm Nonprofit arts center will auction off 12 unique old-growth redwood slabs cut from a 500-year old tree that fell on the property in 2012 Big Sur, California, September 6, 2019 (Newswire.com) - ​ Decades before Europeans first stepped foot in California, a 200-foot old-growth coast redwood tree stood in Big Sur, California, approximately 36.2703° N, 121.8064° W. In 1965, writer and Big Sur resident Henry Miller’s best friend Emil White built a cabin a mere fifty yards from the tree. In 1980, Emil named the property the Henry Miller Memorial Library to honor his friend. For the next 35 years, the Library hosted countless concerts including Philip Glass, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and David Crosby, plus workshops, exhibits, and weddings. On September 11, 2012, prior to a Flaming Lips performance, tree trimmer Tracy Chesebrough climbed the tree to hang a disco ball. Afterward, he turned to staffer Mike Scutari and said, “That tree’s coming down soon.” Mike laughed. In December, Mike was at the Library when he heard a loud cracking sound. He ran outside and saw the tree trunk explode. Glacially, and defiantly taking down a power pole and telephone lines, the tree finally settled on the ground. Examining the wood a week later, local lumberjacks were amazed at what they found: pure, pristine, unadulterated redwood. Henry Miller Memorial Library Executive Director Toren attributes the quality of the wood to the curvature of the tree itself.
