Did management know Alvarez hit 27 home runs last season? -- Jimmy Garst, Roanoke, Va. Hey, Jimmy: The Indians did show interest in Alvarez, who was non-tendered by the Pirates and became a free agent. I think a couple of things probably came into play: No. 1, Alvarez was more expensive than the $7 million deal the Indians agreed to with Napoli. No. 2, the Indians felt Napoli helped them two ways – he gave their offense needed pop from the right side of the plate and he improved their defense. Napoli – whose deal should soon be made official – allows the Indians to move Carlos Santana to DH while he will get most of the time at first base. There is no doubt about Alvarez's power, but he made 23 errors at first base last season. I think the Indians preferred Napoli, considering the cost, at first and Santana at DH instead of Santana at first and Alvarez at DH. Hey, Hoynsie: The Reds seem interested in moving outfielder Jay Bruce. Is the Tribe done with its outfield or would it be interested in a guy who is as streaky hitter as there is, but definitely has pop? – Carl Neifer, Cincinnati.

    The Boston Red Sox Friday, November 15, 2019 * The Boston Globe Xander Bogaerts finishes fifth in American League MVP race Julian McWilliams Xander Bogaerts finished fifth in American League MVP Award voting, the highest of his career. The Red Sox shortstop was 13th in 2013. Bogaerts hit .309 with a career-high 33 homers and 117 RBIs. Bogaerts tied Nomar Garciaparra for the most extra-base hits in a season by a Red Sox shortstop (85). Garciaparra did it in 1997 and 2002. Bogaerts’s 117 RBIs were the most in a season by a Red Sox shortstop since Garciaparra had 120 in 2002. Bogaerts was just the third shortstop in MLB history with at least a .300 batting average, 85 extra-base hits, and 115-plus RBIs. The others are Alex Rodriguez, in 1996 with the Mariners and 2001 and 2002 with the Texas, and Garciaparra. Bogaerts finished behind the Yankees’ DJ LeMahieu, who pulled in 10 fourth-place votes to Bogaerts’s six. Mookie Betts was eighth, Rafael Devers 12th, and J.D. Martinez was tied for 21st in AL voting. Not in terms of production -- not everyone woke up Thursday fresh off a three- homer game and eyeing a third straight RBI title -- but in hitting approach and style. Baseball is a copycat game. Do something at the plate a little differently and very well, and soon someone is bound to mirror it. Baseball people don't think it a coincidence Giants prospect Christian Arroyo resembles Buster Posey in stance and swing, or how Jose Bautista's leg kick led to Josh Donaldson's and Justin Turner's, and on and on. The next trend may come from a mechanical tweak in Arenado's load some are calling the driving force behind not just the third baseman's homers, but also his future standing as a pioneer. "It's now three straight years, and he comes in at the break and he's leading baseball in RBI," Rockies broadcaster and former outfielder Ryan Spilborghs said. "You start paying attention to him. Mechanically, what does he do?" It's what Arenado does with his back (right) foot, specifically, during his swing that is turning heads. Slow down the video of his three-homer game Wednesday. Before each one, Arenado actually lifts his back foot off the ground prior to stepping with the front foot, a momentum-creating motion that essentially gives him a running start into the pitch.
