A Message From President Hughes The men's basketball program is integral to the University's athletic endeavors, just as the athletic program is integral to our view of education - which is that education should develop the whole person. This program moved from NCAA Division II to Division I in 1979, and each year has seen increasing strength and competitive cap abilities in the USO team. The Univefsity is proud of the team's accomplishments, and pleased to support the program in every way possible, including scholarship aid to our athletes, recognition of the values of the program, and promotion of intercollegiate athletics. I believe our USO team will be receiving some national attention this year, and I look forward to watching the season's events unfold. Author E. Hughes President

Jack Boyce John McNamara Vice President - Financial Affairs Vice President - University Relations DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS PAGE3 TOMIANNACONE Director of Athletics Tom Iannacone begins his third year as the University of San Diego director of athletics. He assumed the position September 1, 1988 after a nationwide search. The 49-year-old Iannacone has made great strides in his first two years. His accomplishments at USO include an on going internal reorganization of the athletic department, plus improvements in the major areas of new personnel, additional scholarship assistance, facilities improvements, promotions and marketing, fund raising, drug education and academic support. Iannacone came to the University of San Diego with an im pressive list of credentials and a thorough knowledge of in tercollegiate athletics. Prior to USO, he was Director of Athletics for four years at St. Francis College in Loretto, Pennsylvania. Hard work, loyalty and dedication are just some of the words that easily describe Iannacone. His major contributions at St. Francis included the expansion of sports offerings and scholarships for both men and women, improved budgets, renovation of athletic facilities, the hiring of additional staff, and the establishment of a master plan for the future and continual develop ment of athletics. He served on several ECAC Metro Conference committees, most notably the committee on conference development, which developed a plan for the future and implemented the position for a full-time commissioner. Prior to his tenure at St. Francis, Iannacone served as assistant athletic director at Fordham University from 1977-84. Along with his administrative duties at Fordham, he was an assistant football coach for the Rams. From 1975-78, he acted as offensive coordinator and backfield coach as Fordham captured 19 victories in their final 24 games during this span. The 1977 squad was and remains the highest scoring team in Fordham history, averaging 34 points per game. In 1983, Iannacone was presented the prestigious Jack Coffey Award by the Alumni Association for outstanding contributions to Fordham athletics. He has also served on various Metro Atlantic Conference committees. Prior to Fordham, Iannacone taught physical education and coached track and football in the Ridgefield, Norwalk and New Milford (CT) school districts from 1964-76. He made his col legiate football coaching debut as an offensive backfield coach at Western Connecticut State University in 1974. A 1964 graduate of the University of Connecticut, Iannacone received his master of science degree in physical education from Southern Connecticut State University in 1973. Tom and his wife, Cynthia, have three children: Tom Jr. and Jennifer, both students at USO, and Eric, a Poway High School senior. COACH HANK EGAN PAGE4

SAN DIEGO HEAD COACH HANK EGAN

Head Coach Hank Egan begins his seventh season with the USO Toreros and twentieth as a Division I head coach . This past season he successfully molded his squad into a 16-12 team that finished 3rd in the competitive West Coast Con ference. He has tallied an impressive six-year record at San Diego of 94-75, as well as a 61-24 mark in the USO Sports Center. His .556 overall winning percentage at USO is tops among the nine different coaches that have been at the helm of the USO basketball program. Entering his twentieth year, Coach Egan takes a career mark of 242-260 into the 1990-91 campaign. Sandwiched between this past season's mark of 16-12 and the 1986-87 squad that went 24-6 and won the WCC regular-season crown, the Toreros struggled with young teams that went 11-17 ('87-88) and 8-20 ('88-89). With twelve upper classmen slated for this season's roster, it looks promising for the Toreros to field another competitive and successful team. At the NCAA's in 1986-87, the team suffered a tough 62-61 loss to Auburn University in the tournament's first round; however, the USO men's basketball team completed its most successful season ever. Along the way, USO won fourteen consecutive games, won the regular season West Coast Conference championship with a 13-1 record and finished with a school record 24 victories. Coach Egan's peers from the WCC voted him the 1986-87 Coach of the Year. In 1985-86, he guided the Toreros to a fine record of 19-9 and was named Co-Coach of the Year in the WCC, sharing the honor with UCLA's Jim Harrick (formerly head coach at Pepperdine). A recognized expert in the technical aspects of the game, Hank has an impeccable reputation for integrity, and is a coach who "gets the most" out of his players. Acknowledged as one of the finest defensive coaches in the nation, good defense is a trademark with Egan-coached teams. His 1986-87 team finished #1 in the nation in percentage defense (40.1%) and in the top-ten in scoring defense (60.3). His 1985-86 team finished 8th in the nation in FGO/o defense, limiting opponents to 42.4% shooting. Prior to USO, Hank coached at the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs for eighteen years, thirteen as the head coach. Highlights of his coaching career include his 1986-87 club that finished 24-6 and participated in the NCAA Tournament, his 1985-86 team that finished 19-9, and his 16-9 Air Force club from 1976. As evidence of the high regard in which he is held by his colleagues and basketball people in general, Hank was the alternate coach to (USC) for the 1984 United States Olympic Basketball team; he was a coach in the Olympic tryouts in Bloomington, Indiana, and also scouted South American Olympic teams in San Paulo, Brazil; he is a member of the Legislative Commission of the National Basketball Coaches Association of America; and, was one of the only ten coaches chosen in 1984 by the NCAA to participate and represent the country's coaches in a special meeting of Presidents, Athletic Directors, and Faculty Representatives called to ~tudy the strengthening of academic requirements for intercollegiate athletics. Before becoming the second head coach in Air Force basketball history, Egan was the freshman mentor for two seasons and was chief scout and recruiter during the 1970-71 season. From 1966 to 1968, he was an assistant junior varsity coach. A three-time basketball letterman at Navy, he also played several seasons on Air Force service teams and has coached on both the military and AAU levels. Hank graduated from the Naval Academy in 1960 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering. His hobbies include golf, racquetball, reading and crossword puzzles. Hank and his wife Judy have two children, John and Kelly.

RANDY BENNETT Randy Bennett begins his third year at the University of San Diego as a full-time assistant to coach Hank Egan. His primary responsibilities will be in the areas of recruiting, scouting and on-court coaching. Prior to his 1988 appointment at the University of San Diego, Randy coached two seasons (1986-88) with the University of Idaho as a part-time assistant. Their 1987-88 team finished 19-11 and second in the . Before his stint with Idaho, he was a volunteer assistant at USO (1985-86) while finishing his undergraduate degree at the University of Califor nia, San Diego. The past four summers he has directed Hank Egan's Boys Basketball Camps. A 1986 graduate of UC San Diego, Randy received his B.S. degree in Animal Physiology. He played two years of basketball at UC San Diego (1983-85) and two years at Mesa Community College (1980-82) in Mesa, AZ under his dad, Tom Bennett. In his two years at Mesa, the team went 56-10 and made it to the nationals his freshman year. Randy, currently working on his M.A. in Education, is single and resides in San Diego.

TODD LEE Todd Lee begins his second year as full-time assistant coach to Hank Egan. His primary duties will include recruiting, scouting and on court coaching. The 26-year-old Lee is a 1986 graduate of the University of South Dakota where he completed his Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration. He is currently working on his Master of Science degree in Physical Education with em phasis on coaching and teaching. This past summer Todd organized and co-directed the First Annual USO High School Team Camp. He has assisted with the Boys Basketball Camps at USO the past two summers. Prior to assisting the University of San Diego staff, Todd was an assistant basketball coach at Southwestern Junior College in Chula Vista, California, for two seasons (1987-88, 1988-89). Todd is single and resides in the Pacific Beach area of San Diego. ASSISTANT COACHES PAGE6

GUS MAGEE Gus enters his 21st season as a member of the University of San Diego coaching staff. He began his coaching career in 1970 as a graduate assistant to while pursuing his Master's Degree in Social Science. He joined former USO coach in 1973. Gus also completed his undergraduate degree at the Univers ity of San Diego and was a top basketball player here after completing his tour of duty with the U.S. Air Force. Gus played here from 1966-70, his first three years under legendary coach Phil Wool pert, and his final campaign with Bernie Bickerstaff. With him at center the Toreros had a 53-48 record. He was twice selected the team's most valuable player, in 1968-69 and again in 1969-70. He still holds most of the USO rebounding records including career boards (948), most in a single game (24), and the single season rebounding average (14.4). Gus was the first USO alumnus to be inducted into the USO Basketball Hall of Fame. He takes great pride in being involved with USO basketball since 1966 and in helping it to grow from a small college program to its current status as a member of the NCAA Division One ranks and the West Coast Conference. He is currently an Administrative Analyst with the San Diego Public Library System. Gus and his wife Faye have one son, Mark.

JACK AVINA A new addition to Hank Egan's coaching staff, Jack Avina brings a wealth of experience to USO. At the helm of the University of Portland program for 17 years (1970-87), Jack will be on staff in a part-time capacity and will be involved exclusively with teaching situations and in direct contact with the players. As head coach of the University of Portland of the West Coast Conference, Avina posted a 17-year mark of 222-243. He is cur rently the tenth winningest coach in WCC history. In his last 10 seasons with the Pilots, Jack averaged 15 wins per season. His 1977-78 squad may have been his best, finishing 19-8 overall and 9-5 in the league, earning Avina WCC Coach of the Year honors. He started at the University of Portland after coaching at three different high schools and at San Mateo JC in California. His JC teams had a combined 140-80 record. Between 1987-89 he was head coach of a professional team in Turkey. During the summer of 1984, he worked with Coach Egan at the Olympic Tryouts in Bloomington, Indiana. Jack and his wife Claire have six children and make their home in Portland, Oregon. ROSTER PAGE 7 I 1990-91 University of San Diego Alphabetical Men's Basketball Roster

''AMERICA'S FINEST CITY''

San Diego is truly "America's Finest City." A modern metropolis (second largest in California) and a popular year round resort, San Diego spreads from the coast to the desert, including cliffs, mesas, hills, canyons and valleys. San Diego also surrounds one of California's greatest natural harbors which has been a dominant factor in determining the city's history, economy and development. As home of the largest naval air station on the west coast, the federal government ranks first in economic impor tance to the city with the aerospace equipment industry second. Tourism closely follows as third. Business and pleasure coexist in harmony in San Diego. The climate, attractive setting and recreational facilities make San Diego "America's Finest City." According to Sports Illustrated, "For sheer numbers of participants, diversity of pursuits of involvement, San Diego must rank as the sports and fitness capital of the U.S." Sports are a major feature of the San Diego lifestyle. One can sail, swim, surf, scuba dive, snorkel, wind-surf on 70 miles of public beach or golf at any of the over 70 golf courses throughout the county. Balboa Park, a 1,158-ace recreation and cultural center, offers 25 tennis courts, two gym nasiums, two municipal golf courses and one of the nation's finest zoos. Mission Bay Park is a 4,600-acre playground for jogging, fishing, bicycling, tennis, golf and kite flying. As well as participating in recreational activities, San Diego supports their professional teams-the Chargers in football, the Padres in baseball and the Seekers in soccer. Whatever sporting activity there is, it's here in San Diego-the sports capital of the U.S.A.

The campus is named Alcala Park after the Spanish university town where St. Didacus (i.e., Diego) spent much of his time. Complementing its splendid natural setting is the University's location just 10 minutes from downtown San Diego - conveniently close to the major business, cultural, residential, and recreational areas, as well as the rail, bus and air terminals. Founded in 1949, USD is presently experiencing record attendance. Undergraduate enrollment stands at 3900, graduate students bring the overall campus enrollment to 5900. The University includes a College of Arts and Sciences, and Schools of Business Administration, Education, Nursing, and Law. Each is characterized by high academic standards, small classes, and excellent student-faculty relations. Though the majority of students come from the West Coast, every region of the United States is well-represented on campus. Students also attend USD from 24 foreign countries. In January of 1987, USD opened the doors to its new University Center, a 74,500 square foot building for students, faculty and staff. The two level Center is the largest building on campus. It is the seventh major project completed at USD during the past riine years. It's a place for people to meet for leisure and fun, a place for extracurricular activities. Recreation, intramural and athletic activities are expanding rapidly. Among the many recreation and intramural programs offered, some of the favorites include: Mission Bay Aquatic Center activities (water skiing, surfing, sailing, crew), modern dance, aerobics, bowling, karate, backpacking, softball, tennis, floor hockey and volleyball. USD intercollegiate sports for men include football, soccer, cross country, basketball, baseball, crew, tennis and golf. In women's inter collegiate sports, USD fields programs in volleyball, cross country, swimming, basketball, softball, crew and tennis. PLAYERS PAGE 18

THE 1989-90 USO SEASON-A LOOK BACK After beginning the 1989-90 season 3-7 and finishing their preconference schedule at 5-7 through the month of December, the Toreros turned the tables in the new year as they finished 9-5 in WCC action for third place. Going into the last weekend of WCC play, the Toreros found themselves just two games behind first place LMU and still with an outside shot at the title. Included in their 9-5 wee mark was a 7-game winning streak, a 4-3 wee road record and a sweep of the tough northwest trip over Gonzaga and Portland. San Diego finished with a record of 16-12 and ended the season with an 80-74 win over San Francisco in the first round of the 4th Annual WCC Tournament. Contributing to their slow start were losses to such opponents as UC Santa Barbara, St. John's, South Alabama, UCLA and Nevada-Reno. Possibly their toughest nonconference schedule ever, their 12-game slate through November and December paid dividends for preparing the Toreros for the tough West Coast Conference action. Although they lost twice to #1 LMU and #2 Pepperdine, the Toreros only other WCC loss was a road defeat at the hands of San Francisco. USD's 9-5 third-place finish was the team's best showing since their 13-1 first-place finish in 1986-87. Two major reasons for USD's resurgence last season was the play of newcomers John Jerome and Pat Holbert. Jerome, the 6-8 forward who transferred from Arizona State for his senior year with the Toreros, was the team's most consistent player. He paced the Toreros in scoring and rebounding with averages of 19.3 ppg and 8.0 rpg. John scored in double figures in 27 of the team's 28 games and set new USD single-season records for most points (540) and scoring average (19.3 ppg). John was a First Team AII-WCC selection and the team's MVP. Junior Pat Holbert really came to life in the second part of the season. The 6-3 transfer from Mesa Community College was inserted into the Toreros' starting lineup in game #16 and USD went on to win 10 of their final 13 games. Pat led the team in scoring in six of those games, including three 27-point outbursts in the team's final four games. He was the team's top 3-point threat as he finished with 54 treys for 46.2 percent from beyond the 19'9" arc. Pat was named Honorable Men tion AII-WCC. In the 14 WCC contests, Jerome averaged 19.9 ppg followed by Holbert's 17.0 average. Another key was the team settling on a starting lineup. Besides Jerome and Holbert, coach Hank Egan went with senior Craig Cottrell at forward, junior Dondi Bell at center and sophomore Wayman Strickland at point guard. Strickland finished with team highs in assists (169) and steals (60). Team depth also played a key role for the Toreros. Giving the team quality minutes off the bench included juniors Randy Thompson and Anthony Thomas, as well as sophomores Kelvin Woods and Gylan Dottin. THE WEST COAST CONFERENCE A YEAR TO REMEMBER, A YEAR TO FORGET The 1989-90 season was the best and absolute worst of times in the West Coast Conference. The season as a whole was one of the rougher ones since the conference formed 39 years ago. After having a league-best four teams win 20 games and go on to postseason play in 1988-89, three teams lost 20 in '89-90 and only one continued play in the tournaments. But what a "one" it was. Loyola Marymount set a new NCAA scoring record with 122.4 points per game and roared to the championship game of the NCAA West Regionals. The Lions' roar through the NCAA field, while euphoric, came on the heels of the utmost tragedy in league and school history. On March 4, 1989, , the team star and the all-time leading scorer in conference history, died of heart failure during the WCC tournament. The Lions gained the league's automatic bid based on their 13-1 record in WCC games and LMU found out its NCAA tournament first-round assignment while enroute to Philadelphia for the funeral. Using their all-out style and the support of an entire nation, the Lions dispatched New Mexico State (111-92), defending NCAA champ Michigan (149-115) and Alabama (62-60) before falling to eventual national champ UNLV. THE MEMBERS-PRESENT AND PAST The WCC is made up of eight private institutions spanning the three Pacific states from the borders of Canada to Mexico. The membership-Gonzaga University, Loyola Marymount University, Pepperdine University, the University of Portland, St. Mary's College, the University of San Diego, the University of San Francisco and Santa Clara University- has changed over the years, but the current alignment has remained intact for the longest stretch since its inception in 1952. The league started up in '52 as the "California Basketball Association," an alliance of San Francisco Bay Area schools. Charter members St. Mary's, San Francisco and Santa Clara remain in the alignment, with original members Pacific and San Jose State having departed in the early 1970s. The conference expanded from five to eight schools in 1956 with the addition of current members Loyola Marymount and Pepperdine, along with Fresno State, which left the league in 1958. It was during that initial expansion that the conference was named the " West Coast Athletic Conference." The league shortened that to the current "WCC" in 1989. Several other schools have owned membership in the wee, including UC Santa Barbara (1965-69), Nevada-Las Vegas (1969-75), Nevada-Reno (1969-79), and Seattle (1971-80). Portland joined the conference in 1977, followed by San Diego and Gonzaga in 1980. All together, 15 different schools have com peted in the wee at some point. TRADITION The WCC has deep roots in the glory days of basketball and the league has owned an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament since its first year. Eight different members have won the title at least once with San Francisco leading the way with 15 league banners and a pair of back-to-back national championships in 1955 and 1956. Legendary names from the WCC's past include , K.C. Jones, Phil Smith, , Darwin Cook, , , , , and most recently, and the late Hank Gathers. Former NFL Commissioner Pete Rozelle once served as sports information director at USF. San Francisco 35 years 15 titles Loyola Marymount 35 years 3 titles Pepperdine 35 years 7 titles San Diego 10 years 1 title Santa Clara 38 years 7 titles Portland 14 years 0 titles St. Mary's 38 years 3 titles Gonzaga 10 years O titles PITCHES, DIAMONDS, COURTS AND COURSES While basketball gets most of the attention, it's not the only WCC sport. In fact, the conference is gaining recognition as one of the top soccer leagues in the country. Santa Clara tied for the national championship in 1989 and started the 1990 season as the nation's top ranked team . Portland has been to two straight NCAA tournaments and has won or tied for both of the league's round-robin championships. Four different WCC members-Santa Clara, Portland, San Francisco and San Diego-appeared in last season's Top 20. USF has won the soccer national championship four times. Baseball is also another power sport in the WCC and multiple entries into the NCAA tournament are becoming the rule. Pepperdine had won six straight league titles before Loyola Marymount ended the string last season. Countless players have gone on to professional baseball careers after playing collegiately in the WCC. The University of San Diego men's tennis team has captured the WCC crown the past two seasons after a long dominant run by Pepperdine. This is the sixth season of WCC women's sports, and the fourth with conference membership mirroring the men's league. Gonzaga, Portland and St. Mary's upgraded their programs to the Division One level just three years ago. The Bulldogs won the women's basketball title in their first Division One season, St. Mary's won it in 1989 in their second, and repeated the feat in 1990. Portland has captured the cross-country crown in each of the last three years. Pepperdine is a perennial champion in volleyball and tennis, though the competition and quality of play in all four women's sports basketball, cross country, tennis and volleyball-is improving annually. NATIONAL CHAMPIONS Current WCC members have won 13 NCAA team championships, most recently the shared 1989 soccer crown by Santa Clara. USF has seven titles (four in soccer, two in basketball, one in tennis) followed by Pepperdine with three (all in volleyball) and Santa Clara (soccer) and Gonzaga (boxing) with one apiece. Pepperdine has three individual tennis champions and Gonzaga has a trio of boxing winners. San Francisco has won individual championships in tennis and fencing while Loyola Marymount won an individual track title. San Diego picked up a pair of Division II team tennis crowns and Pepperdine won two track awards prior to joining the WCC. Portland captured its first national title in 1986, in NAIA cross country. St. Mary's also won the NAIA soccer championship that year. The conference sponsors championships in cross country (men and women), baseball, basketball (men and women), golf (men), soccer (men), tennis (men and women) and volleyball (women).
