REMARKS OF SENATOR BOB DOLE

HORATIO ALGER AWARD

AS I UNDERSTAND IT, HORATIO ALGER STORIES ARE

CLASSIC AMERICAN SUCCESS STORIES. AND I GUESS

THERE ARE SOME -- AT LEAST THE PEOPLE WHO

Page 7 of 43 This document is from the collections at the Dole Archives, University of Kansas http://dolearchives.ku.edu

2

DECIDED THAT I SHOULD RECEIVE THIS AWARD -- WHO

CONSIDER ME A SUCCESS. WELL, IF I HAVE SUCCEEDED,

I GIVE MUCH OF THE CREDIT TO WHERE AND HOW I WAS

RAISED.

I GREW UP IN A SMALL, KANSAS TOWN DURING THE

DUST BOWL DAYS. YES, MY FATHER MANAGED A GRAIN

ELEVATOR AND RAN A CREAM AND EGG BUSINESS. MY

MOTHER TAUGHT SEWING. AND TOGETHER THEY KEPT

US TOGETHER THROUGH TOUGH TIMES. EVEN MOVING

INTO OUR BASEMENT, RENTING OUT THE UPSTAIRS, TO

MAKE ENDS MEET.

Page 8 of 43 This document is from the collections at the Dole Archives, University of Kansas http://dolearchives.ku.edu

3

FOR THEN, AS NOW, WE WERE RICH IN ALL THE

THINGS THAT COUNT IN LIFE. WE HAD LOVE -- FROM

FAMILY-- IMMEDIATE AND EXTENDED; WE WERE RICH IN

FRIENDSHIP; AND WE WERE RICH IN TRADITIONAL

AMERICAN VALUES. IF BOB DOLE IS A HORATIO ALGER, l'VE GOT PLENTY OF COMPANY IN RUSSELL AND EVERY

OTHER TOWN IN OUR COUNTRY.

Page 9 of 43 This document is from the collections at the Dole Archives, University of Kansas http://dolearchives.ku.edu

4

FOR NOW, AS THEN, THERE ARE TWO KINDS OF

EDUCATION IN THIS WORLD. THERE'S THE ONE YOU

GIVE YOURSELF, AND ANOTHER YOU GET FROM

OTHERS. YOU CAN GET AN EDUCATION ON THE FARM

OR IN A FACTORY, IN A SCIENCE LAB OR IN A CHURCH

PEW. MOST OF ALL, IF YOU'RE FROM RUSSELL, KANSAS

YOU CAN GET AN EDUCATION JUST BY LOOKING AT LIFE

AROUND YOU.

Page 10 of 43 This document is from the collections at the Dole Archives, University of Kansas http://dolearchives.ku.edu

5

WHEN I WAS A BOY, I DIDN'T KNOW THE NAMES OF

MY CONGRESSMAN OR MY SENATORS. BUT WE WERE

BLESSED TO HAVE FRIENDS AND NEIGHBORS WHO

KNEW AND CARED FOR ONE ANOTHER. WHEN TIMES

WERE TOUGH, PEOPLE WERE TOUGHER. WHEN THE

WINDS HOWLED AND PART OF THE PRAIRIE ITSELF WAS

BLOWN AWAY, I COULD BARELY SEE TO DELIVER THE

NEWSPAPERS ON MY PAPER ROUTE. BUT BECAUSE I

CAME

Page 11 of 43 This document is from the collections at the Dole Archives, University of Kansas http://dolearchives.ku.edu

6

FROM RUSSELL, BECAUSE I CAME FROM KANSAS, I WAS

GRANTED A SPECIAL VISION -- ONE WHICH HAS SEEN ME

THROUGH ALL THE YEARS SINCE.

BUT AS SPECIAL AS MY HOMETOWN WAS AND IS TO

ME, IT IS PIVOTAL BECAUSE OF TWO VERY IMPORTANT

PEOPLE. LIKE MOST EVERY ONE HERE TONIGHT, IT WAS

MY MOM AN DAD WHO SHAPED MY LIFE MORE THAN ALL

OTHERS. AND WHILE I AM RECEIVING THE AWARD

TONIGHT, THEY ARE THE ONES WHO, IN LARGE

MEASURE, DESERVE IT.

Page 12 of 43 This document is from the collections at the Dole Archives, University of Kansas http://dolearchives.ku.edu

7

EACH OF THEM HAD A FAVORITE SAYING, LINES I

HEARD REPEATEDLY AS I GREW UP, LINES THAT SUM UP

WHAT THE HORATIO ALGER AWARD IS ALL ABOUT.

MY MOTHER WOULD CHALLENGE US -- AGAIN AND

AGAIN -- WITH HER CONSTANT REMINDER: "CAN'T NEVER

COULD DO ANYTHING."

AND MY FATHER GAVE US ALL THE GUIDANCE WE

NEEDED WHEN HE DIVIDED THE WORLD THIS WAY:

"THERE ARE DOERS AND THERE ARE STEWERS. 11

Page 13 of 43 This document is from the collections at the Dole Archives, University of Kansas http://dolearchives.ku.edu

8

WITHOUT MY EVEN KNOWING IT, THOSE WORDS

BECAME FOR ME, AS THEY HAD FOR MY PARENTS AND

THEIR PARENTS BEFORE THEM, A WAY OF LIFE.

IT WAS THAT KIND OF UPBRINGING THAT HELPED A

YOUNG, DISABLED WAR VETERAN GET ON HIS FEET

AGAIN; EVEN WHEN IT SEEMED AN IMPOSSIBLE TASK.

WHETHER IT WAS ACADEMICS OR ATHLETICS, OR THE

BATILEFIELD OR CAPITOL HILL, THROUGH THEIR WORDS

AND DEEDS THERE WAS NO DOUBT ABOUT HOW YOU

Page 14 of 43 This document is from the collections at the Dole Archives, University of Kansas http://dolearchives.ku.edu

9

APPROACHED A TASK-- THERE WAS ONLY ONE WAY --

ALL OUT. AND I GUESS, THAT'S HOW HORATIO ALGERS

ARE BORN .

AND THAT CAN BE JUST AS TRUE TODAY -- IN 1988 --

AS IT WAS IN 1923. THE AMERICAN DREAM CAN BE

ACHIEVED. YOUNG MEN AND WOMEN WHO ARE

STARTING THEIR SCHOOLING, THEIR CAREERS RIGHT

NOW HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO MAKE OF THEIR LIVES

ANYTHING THEY WISH. WHAT THEY NEED IS THE WILL,

AND

Page 15 of 43 This document is from the collections at the Dole Archives, University of Kansas http://dolearchives.ku.edu

iO

ENCOURAGEMENT. AND AWARDS LIKE THIS, PROVIDE

THAT KIND OF ENCOURAGEMENT. SO, I WANT TO THANK

ALL OF THOSE INVOLVED WITH TONIGHT'S EVENT. IT IS A

HUMBLING AND VERY SATISFYING EXPERIENCE TO BE

INCLUDED IN THE LONG LIST OF OUTSTANDING

AMERICANS WHO HAVE RECEIVED THE HORATIO ALGER

AWARD.

MEMO RANDUM

SEPTEMBER 28, 1987

TO: SENATOR DOLE

FROM: JO-ANNE

SUBJ: HORATIO ALGER DISTINGUISHED AMERICAN AWARD

Howard Liebengood, representing Paul Bergson at RJR Nabisco and the Horatio Alger Association of Distinguished Americans, has called to state that you have been selected to receive the Award on Friday, May 20, 1988, at the Hyatt in Washington.

I have told them that it was, of course, entirely too early to predict what your schedule might be like in May of next year, but they are asking for an early commitment. Specifically, they want to know if you would be interested in accepting the award (background material attached).

Because this date is so far distant, I haven't br0ught it to your attention previously, but now "Lieb'' is calling me 2-3 times daily wanting an answer. Hence, it is submitted now.

If they have to know now, the answer is NO

Will accept, but unsure about a ttenda nce in May

Keep on hold indefinitely
