A CELEBRATION OF CAREERS

Duval High School Careers Festival was an amazing showcase of business community, government organisations and educational opportunities available in Armidale. Over 1,000 exhibitors, students, parents and members of the community enjoyed the spectacular expo of career opportunities for our young people.

The atmosphere was electric as Duval opened Kasumi Scott receiving its doors to all school students to connect with her award from Laurie local employers, plan career goals and explore Ferguson employment opportunities. I would like to wholeheartedly express my gratitude and appreciation to the Armidale community. The community spirit was amazing, the support, the sponsorships and the donations were extremely humbling.

Duval High school continues to celebrate this wonderful year with another author visit!

Term 3 has kicked off with all Year 8 students experiencing the joy of storytelling by making their own picture book with acclaimed Australian book illustrator and author, Nette Hilton. Some of her books include The web which won the CBCA book of the year in 1992. Nette worked with our students all day on Monday, 23 July and each student individually created an illustrated book. We hope to share these with the school community. Nette is the fourth author to visit or have contact with our Author Nette Hilton visit school during the National Year of Reading - the others have included poet Steven Herrick, JC Burke and Sophie Masson. Through this contact our students’ experience of writing and reading has been enriched and expanded. Each of these opportunities has been fully funded by the English Faculty and the library so that all students have been able to attend.

Another initiative to promote reading has been to invite some of our most avid readers to act as book reviewers for the library for the newest acquisitions. These reviewed books can be found on the bookcase closest to the librarian’s desk. Author Sophie Masson with Tamim Omar, Alex Wojno, Marni Walsh and Caitlin Chalmers.
