Member’s Achievements...... Obituary Bill Carr The Ayrshire breeders of Staffordshire and Derbyshire were extremely saddened to hear of the death of Bill Carr on August 13th.

Bill was a much loved and respected member of the farming community of the North Midlands with his involvement in many agricultural shows and local organisations in the area, in particular the Dovedale Sheep Dog Trials which he was associated with for approximately fifty years. Many people will remember his involvement with the Derbyshire Conference in May, with his wit and local knowledge of the area as a courier on the coaches that week.

There is no doubt Bill will be greatly missed by all who knew him and this was amply demonstrated by the considerable attendance at Bill’s funeral in Waterfall Church. Hunnington Fragy 16 VG 89

Kevin Lawrie - Brieryside Ayrshires Stockman Of The Year is the biggest and most sought over title within the Scottish Young Farmers movement. Held at the Royal Highland Show, there are two parts to the day. During the morning you judge your favourite area - obviously the dairy for Kevin. The total points from the morning’s judging goes towards the individual award and pairs award in each section, and the team award, which is two dairy, two beef and two sheep. The top six out of 50/60 people in each section go through to the afternoon giving you a total of 18 finalists. The slate is then wiped clean, and everyone judges two sheep classes, two beef and two dairy, and then give a set of reasons for each section. Afterwards you are asked to do a beef, sheep and dairy demonstration saying the good and bad points of the animal in front of you, followed by a completing a 50 general knowledge farming question paper. Kevin Lawrie

Kevin was lucky enough to wipe the board in the morning, winning dairy individual for the second time, dairy pairs with Andrew Struthers of Glenmuir Ayrshires for the fourth time and, the Glasgow Herald Trophy for the best team for the second time. He then went one better than his second overall placing last year, and won Stockman Of The Year on his Richard (left) sixth time competing in the competition. receiving his North East Rural Award award from sponsor G F Richard Baynes & Family - Marleycote Ayrshires White

The Marleycote herd owned by the Baynes family is currently made up of 60 dairy Shorthorns and 60 Ayrshires averaging around 8000 litres at 4.1% fat and 3.4% protein. 50% of their milk is sold to over 100 retail outlets under the Northumbrian Pedigree brand.

The family were nominated by one of their retail customers for this year’s Family Run Farm Of The Year category in The Northern Farmer magazine, and they were very pleased to win, if not a little surprised as there was some tough competition. The family then entered the North East Rural Paul (left) receiving Awards competition run by the Newcastle Journal newspaper in the class for small farm up to 200ha , and again despite tough competition the Northern Farmer they managed to win that as well. To top it off, they have made the final Award sponsored three for the dairy farmer of the year in this year’s run by the Yorkshire competition with the results being announced at the awards night at the Agri. My report to you in this journal is going to be full of positives and enthusiasm for our breed, because that’s what it’s really like out there. I know it’s difficult for those who have not been able to venture away from their farm entrance, and that milk price has been so poor, but look at it this way…if you didn’t have Ayrshires, things would be much worse! It’s a tall ask, but when things are hard and you feel down, take a day out to attend a show, market, breed day, anywhere with different surroundings. It will be a real tonic! However, I would avoid the shops!

Judging Seminar - Cuthill Towers Farm By kind permission of A & S Lawrie & Family For all those who attended the judging school and celebrations of the Lawrie family’s show successes at Cuthill Towers, will agree with me, what a fantastic day it was! The day started with the judging school where we had a large number of competitors, many of whom had travelled many miles. Two classes of outstanding junior cows, immaculately turned out, were to be placed and reasons were to be given by the competitors. 21 The Ayrshire Journal Winning the Shirley Crothers Memorial Trophy for New Zealand Youth I was hosted over the weekend by Caroline and Adam Montgomerie at Ambassador (similar to the UK Hugh Stevenson award) was such a Lessnessock, who showed me around. I thoroughly enjoyed my tour of privilege. To be sent to the UK on top of this was an amazing opportunity Dumfries House and Culzean Castle, as well as the herd visits to Knowe, (and a dream come true!). Pocknave, Catcraig and Catrine House.

Landing in London on the 19th June, I caught up on some much needed A train through the beautiful countryside to Cumbria saw me being picked sleep before heading out on a day of sightseeing in London with Duncan, up for a flying visit with Willie and Ann Whiteford. I was then dropped at Sarah and Will Hunter. Many laughs were had at Dunc’s attempts at Dianne and Eric Horn’s organic farm, where I learnt the ins and outs of being a tour guide before Sarah took over the map reading. A bus tour of their cheese and yoghurt making business. The tour of the farm, the London’s amazing sites was definitely the way to go, not to mention the historic Hadrian’s wall and Lestercroft Abbey was extremely interesting - lovely weather England had put on for me! I can’t wait and her breeders, the Lawrie family. to come back to see more! The Ayrshire Journal 22 23 The Ayrshire Journal A strength of our breed is its diversity and ability for it to suit every system. Some of our young breeders have been asked for their opinions on what they look for, bulls they use, as well as cow families they take a keen interest in.

Scott Taylor (Old Mill Ayrshires) Based 20 miles north of Aberdeen, Scott and his family milk 220 cows in total with 50 Ayrshire/Red and Whites under the ‘Old Mill’ prefix on twice a day milking. During the summer, the cows are grazed during the day and housed in cubicles at night, and are fed on a TMR diet of - silage, draff, blend barley and straw, with additional cake in the parlour according to yield. The preferred criteria that is looked for when selecting bulls is - good type and plus for milk, ideally pure, although a bit of Red and White blood is used, but Old Mill try to avoid Swedish red bloodlines. Currently in the tank is Palmyra Tri-Star Burdette, Waxham Executive, Tri-Star Platinum and West Mossgiel Class Talent. Scott’s favourite UK cow families are the Fragys at Hunnington and his favourite homebred family at home is the Old Mill Glorias, and from abroad - Forever Schoon Ping / Pretty line stands out for Scott. A future bull Scott would like to use would be out of Hunnington Fragy 12 by Knutsford White Flash.

Robert McConnell (Beechmount Ayrshires) On the family farm based in County Antrim, Northern Ireland, Robert and his sister Caroline run 60 Ayrshires under the Beechmount prefix within the families 170 cow dairy herd. Their cows are housed all year round and milked twice a day. The main criteria that is looked for is; PLI- as it takes so many different components into account. Positive milk, good for feet and legs and mammary. He has also starting to look at fertility index to improve productivity. Currently in the flask is Hilltown Oblique, Hunnington BBK Easlad, Hunnington Mandella, Whitecroft Furtado, Lessard Jumper. Hilltown Oblique and Sandyford Triclo sexed semen is also used. Cow families that Robert likes are the Rosy family from Palmyra in the USA, and the Punch and Magenta families in the UK. A future bull that Robert would love to use is Palmyra Rosy X Hunnington Mandella.

Shaun Rennie (Brocklehill Ayrshires) At Brocklehill in Ayr, the Rennie family milk 200 cows fed on full a TMR diet. Shaun and his family always look to breed strong powerful cows using bulls from top cow families, with longevity and true type. Good components and volume is also essential to support their cheese contract. Currently in the AI flask at Brocklehill is - Forever Schoon Predator, Mapleburn Woodrow, Hilltown Oblique, Brocklehill Kestral, West Mossgiel Class Talent, sexed Rosehill Manderville and Palmyra Tri-Star Burdette and red bulls if needed are Absolute, Awesome Adam and Armani. Two UK cow families that Shaun admires are the Punchs and Fragys, and from abroad the Forever Schoon Pretty family. Shaun’s dream bull would be from Horseclose Joanna EX 94 x ? (He wants to think about that one)!!!!

Kellie Cornish (Butterbesley Ayrshires) Kellie runs her herd of 230 cows with her family under the prefix, Butterbesley based near Tiverton in Devon. Their cows are grazed for five months in the summer, housed on sand cubicles and fed TMR, and the milk is sold on a Davidstow cheese contract. When selecting bulls to use, they opt for sires that have high butterfat and protein. In the flask Kellie currently has - Hilltown Oblique, Bigginvale Destination, Terracebank Free Beer, Snowman, Grandage Bright Spark, Wroughton Lord Winston and Kamouraska Rockstar. Cow families that Kellie has a keen interest in are - the Bigginvale Candy family and the Violets at Hilltown, and from the outside of the UK - the Hidden Valley Garth family. Kellie states that her dream bull for the future of her herd would be a Hilltown Violet family member X Garth.

The Ayrshire Journal 24 25 The Ayrshire Journal After a hugely successful period for our breed and breeders throughout Great Britain and Ireland, at both National and County shows, in the Ayrshire classes, the British Red and White classes and in particular in the Interbreed ring - take a look at the roundup of success so far this year. It’s phenomenal! Starting back in May at Ayr County we saw Muir Oblique Ursula VG 88, from W Watson, take breed champion and Reserve overall supreme. Sired Marleycote Sea Lily 14 EX 94 (2) by Jelyca Oblique from such a consistent family, there is no doubt this young cow will develop into something special.

Balmoral Show in Northern Ireland was one of the first major events. Matthew Service travelled over the water to judge a superb display of Ayrshires. The McLean family with Marleycote Sea Lily 14 EX 94 (2) took the championship, over Christian Keenan’s Cuthill Towers Pam 30 EX 93 (2), and the Heifer Championship went to John Suffern with Ravenhill Ethel 572 VG 87.

In June at the Royal Cornwall Show, Richard Baynes was the breed judge, and Arthur and Debbie Walters and family had a great day winning Champion and Reserve Champion with West Berriow Modem Rosehip EX 91 and Reid’s Crimson Tulip VG 87 respectively. The Cornwall Club should also be congratulated on winning the best Breed Society stand which is testament Ravenhill Ethel 572 VG 87 especially to Deborah Christophers who put so much work into making it a success.

The Royal Highland Show was again a spectacular event with great exhibits throughout the Ayrshire and British Red and White classes. Keith Davidson officiated all our the breed classes starting with the British Red and Whites. Winning the Junior Championship and then going on to win the prestigious Interbreed Junior Champion was Michael and Peter Howie with Morwick Ruth 158 VG 86. Cuthill Towers Classic Ellie EX 91, from the Lawrie family, won the Overall Championship, and then went on to be crowned Interbreed Dairy Champion.

In the Ayrshire classes there were wins for the Lawrie family in the junior and dry classes, and the Mattinson family who took the Heifer Championship with Troutbeck Modern Apricot, and then went on to win the strong junior Cuthill Towers Classic Ellie EX 91 cow class with Troutbeck Burdette Jess 3 VG 88. This year’s Ayrshire Champion and Reserve were the first and second placed intermediate cows. David and Christine Sanderson had their first ever Highland Championship with Sanderson George Evergreen 310 EX 92, and second to her and the Reserve champion was Cuthill Towers Crown Ray EX 91 from the Lawrie family.

At the Norfolk Show, the judge, Stuart Williams, chose John Smith’s Twemlow Peggy 12 EX 92, by Twemlow Major Threat, who was very fresh but fought off strong competition to win the breed championship. Sandyford Clover 10 EX 97 (7) also had an outing and was shown in the “Other Dairy Breeds” classes due to the change in our showing rules. Clover went on to be Reserve Interbreed Champion for the Tomlinson family.

National Ayrshire Show 2016 Yet again the Ayrshires put on a great show at the Livestock Event for our National Show. We were fortunate that our young members were out in force, enabling cows to be shown that wouldn’t have been otherwise, and along with great support from the Scottish breeders, this show was again a huge success for our breed. With the run up to the show, our young breeders worked tirelessly to prepare the animals entrusted to them. Some needed a little more halter training, and all needed a full clip, along with the usual show Halmyre Urr Louise 297 preparations.

Show day arrived, and this year it was Blaise Tomlinson who was to officiate, and what a great display of judging and promoting the breed he did. First up were the junior heifers, six in the class, and after a final swap, and a very close contest it was Hunnington Astral Maid 5 who took the win over Longwood Woodrow Sandy Rose for her overall balance. The senior heifers again saw six classy heifers forward - Halmyre Urr Louise 297 took the win for her strength and width through her front and for her beautifully balanced mammary over the very sweet Willhome Challenger Amanda. The top two heifers from each class then came to compete for our Junior champion. Blaise was adamant with his choice of Halmyre Urr Louise 297 as his junior champion, being a great example of what our breed is all about!

Eight junior cows forward and, as our judge remarked, not an easy class to place. Blaise opted for the power and strength and correctness of legs of Cuthill Towers Prime Nancy VG 85 in first place over Hunnington Sailor Girl 141 VG 87. The intermediate class was another close contest according to our judge. With another class of six forward, Blaise opted for the frame and presence in the ring from Willhome Modem Caroline 2 VG 85 to take first place over Cuthill Towers Radar Ray 16 EX 92.

The senior class saw yet again another win for the Cuthill Towers herd, this time by Cuthill Towers Crown Ray EX 91, who looked on top form, who took first place over Willhome Gold Moppit 2 EX 93. The breeders group was up next and this is always a favourite class for many around the ring side. This class brings so much to the show in numbers and quality. Cuthill Towers were the winners of the class over the group from Halmyre.

27 The Ayrshire Journal Willie Stevenson and his family receiving the interbreed award at Stranraer Show Cuthill Towers Prime Nancy VG 85

Willhome Gold Moppit 2 EX 93

In the British Red and White class, which is a Championship in itself, we again saw real quality competing, and from the way Blaise spoke about the winner I don’t think he had any hesitation in putting up the fifth lactation Horseclose Joanna EX 94 (3), for her incredible balance of dairyness, bone quality and mammary qualities over the youthful Cuthill Towers Fidelity Miranda VG 88. Breed championship was again a spectacle, with the judge, Blaise Tomlinson, tapping out Cuthill Towers Crown Ray EX 91 as his Grand Champion, then from the same camp Cuthill Towers Prime Nancy VG 85 as Reserve with the heifer champion, Halmyre Urr Louise 297 for his honourable mention.

Heydale Serengeti EX 90 In the Interbreed contests the Ayrshires and the Red and Whites again did us proud. Halmyre Urr Louise 297 took the Reserve Heifer Interbreed title behind an awesome Jersey heifer. The Cow Interbreed was a phenomenal success for us, when the British Red and White Champion, Horseclose Joanna EX 94 (3) from Jim McGarva, prepared and shown by our young breeders team (with Shaun Rennie on the halter) took the Interbreed title. Reserve Interbreed was the National Ayrshire Show champion from the Lawrie family, Cuthill Towers Crown Ray EX 91.

This was the last time our National Show will be held at the Livestock Event due to some ludicrous decisions by RABDF on the future of the event. We have some exciting options for the future of our National Show, and I expect to make announcements on that soon.

More Ayrshire Success Stories... The Sanderson family were in top form yet again at this year’s Great Yorkshire Show. Geraint Thomas placed David and Christine’s Sanderson Break Esther 493 VG 88 as his breed champion, with Marleycote Sea Lily 21 from the Baynes family in Reserve.

In the intense heat of one of the hottest days of the year so far, Peter Berresford travelled to Builth Wells to the Royal Welsh Show where another fine display was on show for him to judge. The Junior championship went to the milking heifer Gwynnog Rudi Linnet from Geraint Thomas, and later in the day she went on to be Reserve Breed Champion. The cow on top form on the day and who took the championship was Willhome Gold Moppit 2 EX 93 from Philip and Stuart Williams. The breed did superbly well in the Interbreeds on the following day and it was the Interbreed pairs that the Ayrshire breed triumphed in, both from the same camp, Willhome Gold Moppit 2 EX 93 and Willhome Modem Caroline 2 VG 85. A huge success for the Williams family.

As I write this, news has just come in - Interbreed champions for our breeders at Bakewell Show - Heydale Serengeti EX 90 from Peter Berresford. Stranraer Show - Stevenson’s Bunty 114 EX 93 from Willie Stevenson. Honiton Show - Gargus Gemima from Chris Creeper and Dumfries Show - Horseclose Joanna EX 94 (3) from Jim McGarva. A massive achievement from all of our breeders from all over the UK. Behind all of these winners have been many superb quality animals out to promote the breed and their herds. A year so far to be proud of being a part of the Ayrshire Cattle Society. I can’t quite believe we are over half way through 2016 - this year just seems to be flying by. Despite it being one of the toughest times ever for dairy farmers, the passion that we have had within our industry and, more importantly, the Ayrshire breed has continued to amaze me.
