TONIGHT The Colorado Avalanche opens a two-game homestand tonight against the Pittsburgh Penguins at Pepsi Center. This evening's contest is the second half of a back-to-back for the Avs, who beat the Predators 3-2 last night in Nashville. The Avs have won a season-high five straight games and are 7-0-1 in their last eight. Last night was Colorado's fifth straight road win, the club's longest road winning streak since since March 25-April 10, 2014 (also five). The Avs are in the midst of a stretch that has them playing 19-of- 28 away from home.

BACK-TO-BACK The Avs are playing their second straight set of back-to-back games as they host the Penguins tonight after beating the Predators 3-2 last night in Nashville. Colorado swept its last back-to-back on Friday in Arizona and Saturday vs. Dallas. Colorado is 3-1-0 on the first game and 1-1-1 on the second game. The Avs are scheduled for 11 back-to-backs in 2018-19.

AVS & PENGUINS Tonight is the first of two meetings between the Avalanche and Penguins in 2018-19. They will wrap up the season series next week in Pittsburgh. The Avs won both meetings last year, sweeping a season series of at least two games from the Penguins for the first time since 2002-03. Ian Cole spent parts of four seasons with the Penguins and was a member of Pittsburgh's back-to-back Stanley Cup championship teams in 2015-16

SEASON SERIES Nov. 28 vs. PIT Dec. 4 @ PIT

YOUR LEAGUE LEADER Mikko Rantanen leads the NHL in scoring with 40 points (10g/30a) in 24 games. Rantanen, who has a current streak of five straight multi-point games, also leads the league in assists and is tied with Nathan MacKinnon for first in multi-point games (13). Some notables on the 22-year-old native of Nousiainen, Finland:

• Surpassed the 40-point mark last night in Nashville, the first NHL player to hit 40 points in 2018-19. Only once in Avalanche/ Nordiques franchise history has a player been the first to 40 points in a season. In 1997-98, Peter Forsberg (9g/31a) recorded his 40th point on Dec. 12 to end the day tied with Philadelphia’s John LeClair (24g/16a) for the most in the NHL. • Is the fastest player to 40 points in Avalanche history (24 games). The previous high for points through 24 games was 37 by MacKinnon this year and Joe Sakic in 1995-96. • Was leading all players with 34 points at U.S. Thanksgiving. Since the team relocated to Denver in 1995, the only other time an Avalanche player led the NHL in scoring on the morning of U.S. Thanksgiving was in 1996-97, when Sakic and Peter Forsberg were co- leading the league with 35 points. However, in 2003-04, Alex Tanguay took over the scoring lead with three assists on Thanksgiving night in Calgary to lead all players with 31 points at the time. • Was the first NHL player to reach the 30-point mark this season, joining Forsberg (1997-98) and Sakic (1998-99) as the only Avalanche/Nordiques skaters to be the first NHL players to reach 30 points in a season. • Has held at least a share of the NHL scoring lead for each of the last 37 days since the morning of Oct. 23. He’s been the outright leader for 31 of those 37 days.

LINE OF FIRE Colorado's top line of Gabriel Landeskog (26)—Nathan MacKinnon (37)—Mikko Rantanen (40) has combined for 103 points (41g/62a) in 24 contests this season, the most points of any three teammates in the NHL. They are the first trio to collect at least 100 points through the first 24 games of a season since Daniel Alfredsson, Dany Heatley and Jason Spezza with Ottawa in 2005-06. • Rantanen-MacKinnon rank 1-2 in League scoring. They were just the third set of teammates since 1985-86 to rank first and second in League scoring through 331 games of a season. Stamkos and Kucherov also did so in 2017-18, while Mario Lemieux, Jaromir Jagr and Ron Francis held the top three slots in 1995-96. • Rantanen and MacKinnon have both recorded multi-point games in each of the Avalanche’s past five contests. Only two other sets of teammates since 1996-97 have simultaneously recorded multi-point efforts in five consecutive team games: Josh Bailey and John Tavares with the Islanders from Dec. 13-21, 2017 and San Jose's Joe Thornton and Patrick Marleau from Jan 20-27, 2013. • Rantanen has assisted on all 17 of MacKinnon's goals. • MacKinnon/Rantanen are by far the most frequent point pair in the NHL, as 32 times they've BOTH been involved in a goal. • Colorado’s threesome has factored on 49 of 89 goals this season (55%). • 13 times all three forwards have gotten points on the same goal. • 41 times at least two of the three has factored on a goal.

ROAD WARRIORS The Avs have won five straight on the road and lead all teams in road points (20). Colorado's current five-game road win streak is its longest since 2013-14. The Avs have scored 60 goals on the road, by far the most of any team.

GETTING OFFENSIVE The Avs are the highest scoring team in the NHL, averaging 3.71 goals-per-game. They lead the NHL in third-period goals (36) and are leading all teams in combined second and third-period scoring (67).

THAT'S THE POWER OF LOVE The Avalanche are the top-ranked power-play team in the league at 32.1% (26/81). The power-play unit went 2-for-2 with the man advantage last night in Nashville and is now is 11-for-22 (50%) over the last seven contests.

SHORT AND TO THE POINT In his first game back from injury, J.T. Compher scored two shorthanded goals on the same penalty kill in the first period on Nov. 23 at Arizona. Compher's effort tied the franchise record for shorthanded goals in a game (fourth time) and a period (second time). He set a new franchise record for the fastest two shorthanded goals (1:25) and became the first player in franchise history to score two SHG on the same opponent power-play chance. Compher became the 20th NHL player to score two shorthanded goals in a span of two minutes or less since 1933-34 and just the fourth in the past 15 years, joining Michael Grabner (2013-14), Tobias Rieder (2014-15) and Chris Tierney (2017-18).

VARLY REACHES 200 Semyon Varlamov picked up his 200th career victory on Nov. 21 in Los Angeles, becoming only the fifth Russian goaltender in NHL history to reach 200 wins. Varly owns a 202-155-43 career record with a 2.64 GAA, .917 Sv% and 23 shutouts in 415 games. He is 172-142-31 with a 2.68 GAA, .917 Sv% and 19 shutouts in 356 contests with the Avalanche, ranking second in franchise history in nearly every category.

GRAND OLD TIME Colorado's 4-3 overtime victory in Anaheim on Nov. 18 marked the Avalanche's 1,000th win since moving to Denver in 1995. The 1,000 wins included 898 in the regular season and 102 in the playoffs. The Avs, who posted their 900th regular season win on Friday in Arizona, now own a 902-671-101-120 record in the regular season.

SEEING STARS Rantanen was named the NHL's First Star of the Month for October. He paced the NHL with 21 points (5g/16a) in 12 games, tying Joe Sakic's Avalanche scoring record for the month of October set in 1996-97. Rantanen's league-leading 16 helpers also equaled an Avalanche record for October and were the most in a single month by a Colorado player since 2002-03 (Peter Forsberg 3x). Rantanen and Landeskog tied for the league lead with a +14 rating, an Avalanche record for October. Mikko was the first Avs player to lead the NHL in scoring through the end of October since Sakic in 1996-97.

RECORD OCTOBER FOR LANDY AS WELL Landeskog led the team with 10 goals last month, setting a new Avalanche record for the month of October (since 1995-96). He was the first franchise player to reach double-digits in goals during the month of October since Owen Nolan (13) with Quebec in 1991. Landeskog led the NHL with four game-winning goals in October, matching the Avalanche record for GWG in any month.

LET'S GO STREAKING MacKinnon and Rantanen tallied points in each of their first nine games, matching the longest scoring streak to begin a season in Avalanche history (John-Michael Liles, 2010-11). Mikko and Nathan were the first set of teammates in Avalanche/Nordiques franchise history to open a season with simultaneous nine-game point streaks. MacKinnon scored a goal in each of his first six games, Oct. 4- 16, setting a franchise record for the longest goal streak to begin a season (previous: five by Mats Sundin in 1992-93.

THIS DAY IN AVALANCHE HISTORY Nov. 28, 1995 - Claude Lemieux scored the first hat trick in Avalanche history as the Avs beat the Islanders 7-3 at Nassau Coliseum.

QUICK HITS

1) The comeback win last night in Winnipeg was the Pens’ first after trailing following the first 40 minutes since a 5-4 overtime win at Columbus on April 5 of last season.

2) Yesterday’s win improved the Pens to 7-0-1 this year against the Western Conference.

3) According to the NHL Stats Team, Pittsburgh improved to 14-0-2 in its past 16 matchups against Western Conference clubs dating to Jan. 25, 2018, outscoring foes 72-34 over that span. This is now the longest interconference point streak in franchise history.

4) Since the Penguins gave up four power-play goals to the Tampa Bay Lightning on November 15, the Pens are 11 for 11 on the PK over the past six games. If you eliminate that game from the Pens’ totals, the team is 53 for 61 (86.9%) on the PK in their other 22 games.

5) This is the Pens’ longest streak this season of not allowing an opposition power-play goal and the team’s longest such streak since a seven-game run between Dec. 27, 2017-Jan. 7, 2018 last year (17 for 17 during that stretch).

TEAM NOTES:

SPREAD THE WEALTH Last night’s win in Winnipeg saw the Penguins receive contributions from throughout the lineup. Eleven different players recorded points, with Derek Grant (1G-1A) the lone multi-point producer. Sixteen of the 18 skaters who dressed recorded at least one shot on goal. The two who didn’t register a shot – Garrett Wilson and Jake Guentzel – each pitched in assists and played solid all-around games.

SUBTLE SWITCH SPARKS ZAR’S GWG Head coach Mike Sullivan flipped right wings for the final period, a move that paid off by producing the Pens’ game-winning goal. Phil Kessel joined a trio with Zach Aston-Reese and Derick Brassard; while Bryan Rust skated with Evgeni Malkin and Tanner Pearson. Late in the third period, Kessel fired a shot from a bad angle off a dump-in, and the resulting rebound was slammed into the back of the net by Aston-Reese for the game-winning goal. It was the second game-winner of Aston-Reese’s career. His first NHL goal last season against Ottawa on Feb. 13 was also a GWG. Netting the winning tally capped a productive game for Aston-Reese. He skated a team- high (tied) 2:37 shorthanded minutes, and he was also on the ice in the final minute as the Pens protected their slim one-goal advantage.

FOURTH WAS FIRST Derek Grant returned after missing two games due to injury, and he provided an immediate spark, netting the first multi-point game (1G-1A) of his Pittsburgh career. Grant’s line with Riley Sheahan (1G) and Garrett Wilson (1A) scored two of the Pens’ four goals. They were rewarded with increased ice time over the final two periods. Grant’s goal was his first in a Penguins’ sweater. Wilson recorded his first NHL regular-season point with his helper. Before yesterday, Wilson’s only other NHL point came in the playoffs back in Game 4 of the 2016 First Round when he played for the Florida Panthers.

LOCKED IN Sidney Crosby was on fire before he was sidelined for three games with an upper-body injury earlier this month. Since returning, Crosby has picked up where he left off. He scored the Pens’ opening goal (on a backhander of course) last night to give him six points (2G-4A) in four appearances since his return. Stretching back further, Crosby has 10 goals and 20 points over his past 14 games.

LETANG SET PENS’ D-MAN GAMES PLAYED RECORD Kris Letang added another franchise record to his resume when he played in his 704th NHL game yesterday in Winnipeg. He surpassed former teammate and defensive partner Brooks Orpik for the most games played by a defenseman in club history. It was the third Penguins defensive record Letang has accumulated over the past year, after becoming the franchise leader for most assists (356) and points (457) by a Pittsburgh defenseman. Letang has points in six of his past seven games entering tonight (1G-7A-8PTS). He is currently riding a season-high four-game assist/point streak (6A total during his run).

Most Games Played Among D in Pens’ History Name GP Kris Letang 704 Brooks Orpik 703 Ron Stackhouse 621 Dave Burrows 573 Rob Scuderi 460

GETTING TRICKY Jake Guentzel tallied hat tricks in each of his first two playoff runs with Pittsburgh (2017 & ’18), but he had yet to do so in the regular season. That all changed Saturday when he scored three times in the 4-2 win against the Columbus Blue Jackets. His first NHL hat trick in the First Round of the 2017 playoffs also came against the Jackets. Pittsburgh’s leading scorer with 11 goals, Guentzel has seven points (5G-2A) in his last five games.

BACKCHECKING THE PENS *Phil Kessel currently owns a season-high nine-game point streak (3G-9A-12PTS). It’s the longest point streak that he has accumulated since joining the Pens. It’s his longest run since he had a 10-game run from March 19-April 9, 2011 (4G-7A-11PTS). *Kessel’s point streak is tied with Evgeni Malkin for the longest amassed by a Pens’ player this season. *Both Olli Maatta and Jake Guentzel collected their 100th NHL points with assists against the Jets. *Goalie Casey DeSmith, who leads the team with six wins this year, is now 6-2-3 with a 2.17 goals-against average (24 GA/664 MIN) and a .932 save percentage (328 saves/352 shots) in his 11 starts this year.
