Titan Men’s NCAA Game Notes, March 12-13, 2010

4 X 2 = SWEET 16: At the start of the NCAA championships, Illinois Wesleyan was one of 13 schools that fielded teams in both the men’s and women’s tournaments. Of those 13 schools, only Illinois Wesleyan, Carthage, Williams and Wisconsin-Stevens still have both teams in the tournaments going into the sectionals. The others were Christopher Newport, Hope, Maryville College, Medaille, St. Norbert, U. of St. Thomas (Minn.), Washington (Mo.), William Paterson and Wisconsin-Whitewater.

THE NCAA TOURNEY: Illinois Wesleyan is 41-18 in the NCAA tourney and was 30-19 in NAIA postseason play from 1948-83…IWU is making its first showing in the NCAA tournament since finishing third in 2006 and its 19th appearance in the NCAA tournament in the 27 years since dropping out of NAIA competition (after 1982-83)…IWU has made 14 appearances in the round of 16 in the NCAA Division III tournament and was the national champion in 1997 and has finished third in 1996, 2001 and 2006…In the 1990s, IWU made the Division III tournament nine times and six years in a row (1994-99).

THE 20-WIN SEASON: The Titans are 22-7 and have their 20th 20-win season in school history and the 19th in the last 45 years...IWU has its third straight winning season after the 2006-07 team finished 11-14. Prior to that, IWU enjoyed 17 straight seasons with a record of .500 or better. The 2001-02 team was 12-12 and the last sub-.500 season was 1988-89 (12-14).

HEAD COACH RON ROSE: In his fourth season at Illinois Wesleyan, Ron Rose (Illinois Wesleyan ‘88) has compiled a 62-44 record (.585) and a 28-28 mark (.500) in the CCIW…He is the sixth winningest coach in IWU history (by victories)…As a guard, Rose played on teams that went to three NCAA Division III tournaments at Illinois Wesleyan and were 5-3 in the tournament in 1986, 1987 and 1988.

DOUG SEXAUER: The junior was a first team all-CCIW selection this season after being named to the third team last season…Led the conference with a .667 percentage (100 of 150) and was sixth in scoring vs. CCIW foes at 16.1 points per game…Currently ranks No. 40 all-time at IWU with 972 career points…His .624 overall field goal percentage this year currently ranks fifth among IWU season records and his .568 career field goal percentage (397 of 696) is fifth all-time…Has led the team in scoring 10 times and in rebounding 12 times this season…Has five “double- doubles” in 2009-10 and has seven in career…Was named CCIW “Player of the Week” in early January as he missed only two shots from the field in two league wins. Sexauer was 11- of-12 from the field and scored 23 points with four rebounds and two assists in the Titans’ 84-79 win at North Central on Jan. 6 and, in the Titans’ 79-69 win vs. Carthage on Jan. 9, he was 10-of-11 from the field and scored 24 points with seven rebounds. For that week he was 21-of-23 (.913) from the floor and averaged 23.5 points and 5.5 rebounds.

SEAN JOHNSON: The junior guard was named to the second team all-conference squad…He currently has 1,060 career points and ranks 37th in IWU career history… Only 38 players have eclipsed the 1,000-point barrier at the school…He is No. 6 in school history with 171 3-point field goals made and ranks 17th with 233 career assists…His 67 3-pointers made this season is tied for 10th most in a single Titan season and his 164 3-pointers attempted is eighth most… Has led the team in scoring 11 times and in rebounding in four games this season…He was eighth in the CCIW in both scoring (15.5) and percentage (.810, 51 of 63), was second in the CCIW with 2.0 3-pointers per game and tied for sixth with 2.93 assists per game…He was third team all-CCIW as a freshman.

TRAVIS ROSENKRANZ: The junior point guard was a third team all-CCIW honoree as he led the league with a 3.42 to turnover ratio and finished third in the league with 4.64 assists per game. He was also seventh in the CCIW with a free throw percentage of .811 (30 of 37)…In Illinois Wesleyan career records, Rosenkranz is No. 10 in assists with 321…His assist total of 123 this season is 15th best in a Titan campaign…Has led the team in scoring three times and in rebounding twice (both in CCIW tournament games) this season.

JORDAN ZIMMER: The sophomore ranks No. 14 all-time at Illinois Wesleyan with 107 3- pointers and his career .457 3-point percentage is sixth best in a Titan uniform…Has led the Titans in scoring in three games and topped the squad in rebounds in two games…His younger brother Brady was named to the Class 1A Illinois all-state team as he averaged 29.3 points this winter for Delavan (Ill.) High School.

NCAA STATS: As a team, Illinois Wesleyan ranks 12th in the nation in field goal percentage (.489) and eighth in assist/turnover ratio (1.33). The Titans are also No. 25 in fewest turnovers per game with an 11.9 average…Individually, IWU has two players in the top 10 – Doug Sexauer is 17th in field goal accuracy (.624) and Travis Rosenkranz is sixth in assist/turnover ratio (3.0).

MISCELLANEOUS: Sophomore John Koschnitzky corralled a career-high 12 rebounds in the first round NCAA win over Central. His previous high was eight rebounds, accomplished three times and once this year…The Titans have made a 3-point field goal in 399 straight games…IWU was 12-2 at home, is 3-0 on neutral courts and 7-5 on the road in 2009-10…As a team in conference games only, Illinois Wesleyan tied with Carthage in scoring offense (72.6) and led the CCIW in assists (15.07 per game). The Titans ranked sixth in defense (69.8) and fourth in scoring margin (+2.9 points per game).

THE COLLEGE CONFERENCE OF ILLINOIS & WISCONSIN IN THE NCAA: Heading into the 2010 sectional round of the NCAA tournament, teams from the CCIW have an NCAA Division III tournament record of 112-59 (.655)…This is the first time since 2006 that the CCIW was represented by three teams in the NCAA tournament. This is also the third straight season the conference has had more than one team competing at the national level… CCIW teams have accounted for six NCAA Division III championships (Illinois Wesleyan in 1997 and North Park in 1978, 1979, 1980, 1985, and 1987), two second-place finishes (Augustana in 1981 and 1993), and six third-place finishes (Illinois Wesleyan in 2006, 2001 and 1996, Carthage in 2002, and Augustana in 1975 and 1976)…Prior to being in Division III, Wheaton won the Division II title in 1957 and finished fourth in 1958.

MORE CCIW: Now in its 64th year as of 2009-10, the CCIW has sponsored men’s basketball as a championship sport since the conference began play in 1946-47. Illinois Wesleyan has dominated the league over the years, winning or sharing 27 titles in 63 years. Augustana has 12 championships, including three titles in a row from 2006-09. Millikin and Wheaton have claimed nine championships each, and North Park was won six times. Carthage has won five CCIW championships, North Central has won three league crowns, and Elmhurst won its first-ever league basketball title in 2001.

IWU VS. CCIW IN NCAA: The game vs. Carthage will marks the eighth time Illinois Wesleyan has played a team from the CCIW in NCAA tournament action. The Titans have won five straight, most recently in the 2001 tournament sectional semifinal round over Elmhurst, 63-60, at Chicago. The Titans went on to finish third in the nation that season.

CCIW PRESEASON: In a pre-season poll released on Oct. 28, the CCIW men’s basketball coaches picked defending-champion Wheaton to repeat in 2009-10 (4 first-place votes, 46 points), followed by Augustana second (2 first-place votes, 39 points), Carthage third (1 first-place vote, 37 points), Illinois Wesleyan fourth (1 first-place vote, 36 points), Elmhurst fifth (22 points), Millikin sixth (17), North Central seventh (15) and North Park eighth (12).

CARTHAGE (24-5): This will be the fourth meeting this year between the CCIW rival Red Men and the Titans, with Carthage winning two of three already. During the regular season, the Titans won at home, 79-69, on Jan. 9 and Carthage claimed an 80-55 decision in Kenosha on Jan. 30. Carthage beat IWU, 70-67, in the championship game of the CCIW tournament in Kenosha on Feb. 28… Illinois Wesleyan leads the Carthage series, which dates to a Feb. 13, 1926 game in Carthage, Ill., 84-24…Carthage reached the sectionals with a 76-58 home win over No. 24 Anderson on Saturday. The Red Men won their first round game, 84-70, vs. Aurora…Junior Steve Djurickovic is ranked No. 2 on the Carthage career scoring list (1,977 points thru March 11) and needs 137 points to pass Jason Wiertel (2,113 points, 1969-2002) for first place. In other school career categories, Djurickovic is seventh in field goals (618), eighth in field-goal attempts (1,238), first in made free throws (648), first in free-throw attempts (776) and first in assists (476)…His father, head coach Bosko Djurickovic, has a 14-year record of 241-123 in his 14th season at Carthage and has a career record of 437- 202 in 24 years overall, including 196-79 in 10 years at North Park.

WISCONSN-STEVENS POINT (25-4): The Titans have won both games against Wisconsin-Stevens Point, 109-58 back in 1971-72, and 100-78 in the 1975-76 season…The Pointers, winners of back-to-back national Division III championships in 2004 and 2005, finished second in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference with a 12-4 mark then went on to win the WIAC tournament, 63-57 win over Wis.-Whitewater. The Pointers enter the game with three players averaging double figure scoring. Matt Moses leads the team at 14.6 points per game while Louis Hurd averages 12.6 and Jared Jenkins adds 10.6 per game…Wisconsin- Stevens Point won its first round game, 59-58, over Carleton College and beat No. 15 St. Norbert College, 72- 65, in the second round…The Pointers are coached by Bob Semling, who has a record of 115-29 in his fifth season.

TEXAS-DALLAS (24-5): The Titans have a 1-0 lead in the series against UT-Dallas, coming with a 71-58 neutraql court win in the 2005-06 season… The Comets are no stranger to the NCAA Dvision III tournament, making their third all-time appearance after losing in overtime (64-59 to Guilford) in the sectional finals a year ago. UT-D won the American Southwest Conference East Division with an 18-2 record but lost to Mary Hardin- Baylor, 80-70, in the conference tournament championship game. The Comets got a first round bye in the NCAA championship and nipped CCIW-member Wheaton, 63-62, in the second round. Jordan Eppink made a basket with six second left to give the Comets the win…The team’s leading rebounder at 6.1 per game, Jimmy Witten, suffered a season ending knee injury in UT-D’s 80-70 loss to Mary Hardin-Baylor in the conference title game…UT-D has seven players average in double figures led by Scott Rodgers at 15.7…Terry Butterfield has a 10-year record of 149-118 as the Texas-Dallas coach.
