PART II PERSONAL PAPERS AND ORGANIZATIONAL RECORDS Allen, Paul Hamilton, 1911-1963 Collection 1 RG 4/1/5/15 Photographs, 1937-1959 (1.0 linear feet) Paul Allen was a botanist and plantsman of the American tropics. He was student assistant to C. W. Dodge, the Garden's mycologist, and collector for the Missouri Botanical Garden expedition to Panama in 1934. As manager of the Garden's tropical research station in Balboa, Panama, from 1936 to 1939, he actively col- lected plants for the Flora of Panama. He was the representative of the Garden in Central America, 1940-43, and was recruited after the War to write treatments for the Flora of Panama. The photos consist of 1125 negatives and contact prints of plant taxa, including habitat photos, herbarium specimens, and close-ups arranged in alphabetical order by genus and species. A handwritten inventory by the donor in the collection file lists each item including 19 rolls of film of plant communities in El Salvador, Costa Rica, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Panama. The collection contains 203 color slides of plants in Panama, other parts of Central America, and North Borneo. Also included are black and white snapshots of Panama, 1937-1944, and specimen photos presented to the Garden's herbarium. Allen's field books and other papers that may give further identification are housed at the Hunt Institute of Botanical Documentation. Copies of certain field notebooks and specimen books are in the herbarium curator correspondence of Robert Woodson, (Collection 1, RG 4/1/1/3). Gift, 1983-1990. Aubrey Davidson’s laudatory address to an excited crowd attending the opening of the Panama-California Exposition on January 1, 1915, gave no inkling that the Spanish Colonial architectural legacy that is so familiar to San Diegans today was ever in doubt. The buildings of this exposition have not been thrown up with the careless unconcern that characterizes a transient pleasure resort. As early as 1909, Davidson, then president of the Chamber of Commerce, had suggested that San Diego hold an exposition in 1915 to celebrate the opening of the Panama Canal. When City Park was selected as the site in 1910, it seemed appropriate to rename the park for Spanish explorer Vasco Nuñez de Balboa, who had discovered the Pacific Ocean and claimed the Iris H. W. Aubrey Davidson, founder of the Southern Trust and Commerce Bank and Commerce Bank and president of the San Diego Chamber of Commerce, said San Diego should stage an exposition in 1915 to celebrate the completion of the Panama Canal. He told his fellow Chamber of Commerce members that San Diego would be the first American port of call north of the Panama Canal on the Pacific Coast. An exposition would call attention to the city and bolster an economy still shaky from the Wall Street panic of 1907. The Chamber of Commerce authorized Davidson to appoint a committee to look into his idea.1 Because the idea began with him, Davidson is called "the father of the exposition."2 On September 3, 1909, a special Chamber of Commerce committee formed the Panama- California Exposition Company and sent articles of incorporation to the Secretary of State in Sacramento.3 In 1910 San Diego had a population of 39,578, San Diego County 61,665, Los Angeles 319,198 and San Francisco 416,912. San Diego's meager population, the smallest of any city ever to attempt holding an international exposition, testifies to the city's extraordinary pluck and vitality.4 The Board of Directors of the Panama-California Exposition Company, on September 10, 1909, elected Ulysses S. -

The Trees of Balboa Park By Nancy Carol Carter Landscape architect Samuel H. Parsons, Jr. noted with enthusiasm the growth of trees and shrubs in City Park when he returned to San Diego in 1910. Five years had elapsed since his New York firm had submitted a comprehensive master plan for the layout of the 1,400 acres set aside as a park in 1868, but mostly left in a natural state for the next few decades. Parsons had returned to San Diego because the city had decided to host an international exposition in 1915. He was hired this time to assess progress on City Park’s master plan and to suggest improvements in all of San Diego’s parks. He thought San Diego had made good progress in engi- neering roads and otherwise fulfilling the landscape plan of City Park.1 His formal report to the park commissioners, submitted June 28, 1910, includes a description of trees and other plantings in the park. By the time Parsons wrote this report, City Park had been in existence for forty-two years and was estimated to contain about 20,000 healthy trees and shrubs. The park commission kept careful records of 2,357 shrubs and vines planted in 1909, but earlier landscape records are sketchy.2 In 1902, Parsons had suggested that the mesas be left open to preserve the stunning views stretching from the mountains to the ocean. “Overplanting is a common mistake everywhere,” he said, “A park is too often perverted to a sort of botanical garden, where a heterogeneous lot of plants are gathered together and massed in a haphazard fashion.”3 He was trying to help San Diegans understand the difference between a park and botanical garden and perhaps obliquely com- menting on the hodgepodge of homegrown efforts to develop the park before 1910. -

Seventh Avenue Walking Tour
Nestled into Balboa Park’s northwest corner, the 3500 block of Seventh Avenue is one of San Diego’s best-kept secrets. This lush tract looked very different – vacant, dusty and studded with chaparral – in 1886, when it became Thomas T. Crittenden’s Addition. In 1903, George White Marston, a successful merchant and visionary civic leader, bought ten acres on the east side of Crittenden’s Addition for his extended family’s estates. Today, five of those acres belong to the George Marston House & Gardens. Within two decades, this subdivision was transformed into a fine collection of thoughtfully landscaped Arts & Crafts houses created for the Marstons and other prominent San Diegans who were eager to live indoors and out and to blend their hidden street into the evolving City Park. Being leading citizens of the day, they helped produce major civic projects, including the two international expositions. The block represents an important slice of San Diego’s architectural history, with the strong imprint of architect Irving J. Gill. We can see Gill’s buildings change from variations on the English Arts & Crafts style in brick to the horizontal Prairie Style with wide, sheltering eaves to geometric Early Modernism devoid of surface ornament. Gill designed two residences alone (one, the Thomas and Margaret Hamilton House, was demolished for a residential tower) and six others in partnership with another influential architect, William S. Hebbard. Nationally acclaimed planners and landscape architects such as John Nolen, Samuel Parsons, Jr., and Thomas D. Church worked on this block, usually hired by George Marston. Also heavily involved was Marston’s friend, horticulturist Kate Sessions, who is considered the “Mother of Balboa Park.” Original plantings, many still extant, came primarily from Ernest Benard, a prominent nurseryman, whose business was located in Mission Valley, though the California pepper trees that originally lined the street (as seen in the cover photo) were later changed to jacarandas. -

www.nature.com/scientificreports OPEN The complete chloroplast genome of Gleditsia sinensis and Gleditsia japonica: genome organization, comparative analysis, and development of taxon specifc DNA mini‑barcodes Wei Tan1,2, Han Gao1,2, Weiling Jiang1, Huanyu Zhang1, Xiaolei Yu1, Erwei Liu1* & Xiaoxuan Tian1* Chloroplast genomes have been widely considered an informative and valuable resource for molecular marker development and phylogenetic reconstruction in plant species. This study evaluated the complete chloroplast genomes of the traditional Chinese medicine Gleditsia sinensis and G. japonica, an adulterant of the former. The complete chloroplast genomes of G. sinensis and G. japonica were found to be of sizes 163,175 bp and 162,391 bp, respectively. A total of 111 genes were identifed in each chloroplast genome, including 77 coding sequences, 30 tRNA, and 4 rRNA genes. Comparative analysis demonstrated that the chloroplast genomes of these two species were highly conserved in genome size, GC contents, and gene organization. Additionally, nucleotide diversity analysis of the two chloroplast genomes revealed that the two short regions of ycf1b were highly diverse, and could be treated as mini-barcode candidate regions. The mini-barcode of primers ZJ818F-1038R was proven to precisely discriminate between these two species and refect their biomass ratio accurately. Overall, the fndings of our study will shed light on the genetic evolution and guide species identifcation of G. sinensis and G. japonica. Gleditsia (honey locust) is a genus comprising 13 species of the Caesalpinioideae subfamily and Fabaceae family1. Te honey locust is native to North America and Asia, and a majority of the species diversity is found in eastern Asia2. -

Although the Chinese honeylocust (Gleditsia sinensis) is receiving extensive pharmacological investigation because of its use in traditional Chinese medicine, little work has been undertaken to investigate use of G. sinensis products as soil amendments or as sources of nematode-antagonistic phytochemicals. In this study, seed pods (fruit) were dried and ground, and an ethanolic extract was prepared and examined for its effects on egg hatch, movement, and viability of Meloidogyne incognita in in vitro experiments. In addition, the dried fruit powder and the ethanolic extract were both tested in greenhouse experiments for effects onM. incognita populations and on growth of pepper (Capsicum annuum), and the dried fruit powder was also tested on water spinach (Ipomoea aquatica). In the in vitro experiments, concentrations of 1.0 and 10.0 mg/ml ethanolic extract of the fruit powder reduced second-stage juvenile (J2) viability by 96.5% to 98.4%; the higher concentration also suppressed egg hatch by 60.3%.
