  • Subject: Result of the 40Th Japan Cup (G1)
FROM: Junichi Takada General Manager, Media & Publicity Department, THE JAPAN RACING ASSOCIATION (JRA) DATE: November 29, 2020 SUBJECT: RESULT OF THE 40TH JAPAN CUP (G1) The Japan Cup, in its 40th year, continues to attract some of the top turf horses from around the world—67 runners from North America, 146 from Europe, 26 from Oceania and five from Asia—while a number of runners have made this race their starting point towards further international success in following years. Last year’s version was won by Suave Richard (JPN, by Heart’s Cry), marking his second G1 victory after claiming the Osaka Hai (G1, 2,000m) in 2018. Behind in second was three-year-old filly Curren Bouquetd’or who registered her third runner-up effort at the G1 level—the other two were the Yushun Himba (Japanese Oaks, 2,400m) and the Shuka Sho (2,000m)—and was followed by 2018 Tokyo Yushun (Japanese Derby, G1, 2,400m) victor Wagnerian (JPN, by Deep Impact) in third. This year, the Japan Cup welcomed French contender Way To Paris. After finishing second to subsequent Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe (G1, 2,400m) winner Sottsass (FR, C4, by Siyouni) in the Prix Ganay (G1, 2,100m) in June, the gray registered his first group-one title in the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud (2,400m) before turning in a ninth in his latest start, the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe. Meanwhile, the focus was centered on the three Triple Crown winners. Three-year-old filly Daring Tact claimed the Shuka Sho (G1, 2,000m; Oct.18) to become the sixth filly to capture the fillies’ Triple Crown title and moreover, the first in JRA history to do so undefeated.

  • The 23Rd Shuka
FROM: Masahiro Usuda General Manager, Media & Publicity Department, THE JAPAN RACING ASSOCIATION (JRA) DATE: October 14, 2018 SUBJECT: RESULT OF THE 23RD SHUKA SHO (G1) The Shuka Sho, established in 1996, is run over 2,000 meters at Kyoto Racecourse and the third leg of the fillies’ Triple Crown reserved for the season’s three-year-old fillies following the Oka Sho (Japanese 1000 Guineas, G1, 1,600m) and the Yushun Himba (Japanese Oaks, G1, 2,400m). The Queen Elizabeth II Cup (G1, 2,200m) was formally regarded as the third leg of the fillies’ Triple Crown until the race was opened to older fillies and mares; hence the Shuka Sho was established to take its place. Acquiring international G1 status in 2009, the Shuka Sho is open to a maximum of nine foreign runners. Gentildonna (JPN, by Deep Impact) became only the fourth filly in JRA history to claim the fillies’ Triple Crown title after Mejiro Ramonu (JPN, by Mogami; 1986), Still in Love (JPN, by Sunday Silence; 2003) and Apapane (JPN, by King Kamehameha; 2010), and proceeded to achieve greater accomplishment within her three-year-old season by winning the Japan Cup (G1, 2,400m) against a powerful field which contributed to earning the season’s highest honor of JRA’s Horse of the Year award in 2012. Almond Eye, winner of the Oka Sho-Yushun Himba made her bid to become JRA’s fifth filly to win all three of the fillies’ Triple Crown in her first-up run of her fall campaign. The race was also the first start of the fall for 2017 Best Two-Year-Old Filly Lucky Lilac.

Exclusive Topics for Horse Racing in Japan – Summer Edition – July 2021 The Japan Racing Association JRA-organized races and racegoers have fortunately been able to avoid the worst effects of the COVID-19 pandemic this year. Whereas races had to be held in front of empty stands from mid- January, venues gradually began to reopen their doors with capacity limitations as early as March, Nakayama Racecourse being the last to do so in April. With the exception of the February Stakes, the spring G1 series was able to be held with the attendance and support of fans. The World All-Star Jockeys, however, which is held annually in Sapporo in late August, had to be canceled for the second year in a row. Major spring events around the world resumed this year. At the Dubai World Cup day meeting in late March, Japanese contenders registered runner-up efforts in four G1 races on the card. The following month, they swept the top four places in Hong Kong’s Queen Elizabeth II Cup (G1, 2,000m), where Loves Only You (JPN, M5, by Deep Impact) took home first prize. As contenders expected to compete abroad this autumn gradually coming to light, six home-bred nominees for this year’s Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe (G1, 2,400m) on October 3 were announced in May. The first potential Arc runner to be announced was Deep Bond (JPN, C4, by Kizuna), who was 10th, 5th and 4th in last year’s Triple Crown races, each time behind champion Contrail (JPN, C4, by Deep Impact) who made a clean sweep.

  • Result of the 82Nd Yushun Himba
FROM: Media & Publicity Department, THE JAPAN RACING ASSOCIATION (JRA) DATE: May 23, 2021 SUBJECT: RESULT OF THE 82ND YUSHUN HIMBA (JAPANESE OAKS, G1) The Japanese version of the prestigious British Oaks, the Yushun Himba was established in 1938 and contested among runners limited to home-bred three-year-old fillies. Initially called the “Hanshin Yushun Himba” and held during the fall season at Hanshin Racecourse, the race acquired its current status as the Japanese Oaks upon changing its venue to Tokyo Racecourse in 1946. The race was also shifted to the spring season, being the richest in prize money and longest in distance among the current JRA races limited to fillies/mares. The Yushun Himba opened its door to foreign-bred runners in 2003 and acquired international G1 status in 2010. While the Oka Sho (Japanese 1000 Guineas, G1, 1,600m) serves in gauging the speed potentials in the future broodmares, the Yushun Himba is a championship race in which to discover the added quality of stamina as well as speed, and winners of this race are highly rated as broodmares upon retirement to stud. Recent winners included fillies/mares that became high profile G1 winners. Last year’s winner Daring Tact (JPN, by Epiphaneia) went on to capture the Shuka Sho (G1, 2,000m) that autumn not only to become the sixth filly to capture the fillies’ Triple Crown title but the first in JRA history to do so undefeated, while 2019 victor Loves Only You (JPN, by Deep Impact) scored her second G1 title in the Hong Kong’s Queen Elizabeth II Cup (G1, 2,000m) last month.
